The multitouch is nice and so is the speed boost, but what I'm really happy about is that now I can buy it from a local reseller (or the :apple:store in Toronto), rather than smuggling it home from Buffalo.

Heh. Yeah, the prices dropped by about $100 for the lowest-end 15".

I'm seriously considering a refurb though, they're quite well priced. I don't NEED a multi-touch trackpad (or is this one of those things that will come back and haunt me a year later when you're all tapping away on your shiny new toys, and I'm sitting there thinking "crap, I should have got one"? Hmmm....)

But, sub-$1400 15" MacBook Pros.... so tempting...

Edit: dang, they're gone. Still $1500 ones.

Hard drive size...

Why are folks complaining about hard drive size in the 15" model? Why not buy the cheapest option for hard drive on teh MBP, order a 320 GB WD drive, clone your Mac from the 200 to the 320, insert into MBP and place the 200GB in a $20 USB drive cage? :)

Also, how the the damn world do they not include an Apple Remote with this expensive laptop???????

now they are cutting back on features and accessories?

apple is in danger of turning into microsoft

It looks like they swapped out the remote for a cleaning cloth. Or at least, my matte October/November MBP didn't come with a cloth.

I've seen many complaints here about no included remotes and am curious: are people upset because of the principle of it (paying $19 for something that was once bundled in) or are you missing something that you truly can't do without? My fiancee has one that was bundled in with her MacBook about a year and a half ago, but hasn't taken it out of the plastic so obviously we haven't shown a demonstrated need for one.

If loosing the remote comes along with upgrades elsewhere in the machine at the same price point, I'll go with the hardware upgrades. However, I'm still curious to know how useful the remote has been to others out there. Maybe then we'll take ours out of the plastic. :D

I use my remote all the time. Not just while watching movies either. It's easier to change the sound that way than fn + *checks* f3/f4/f5 and much easier to control iTunes since you don't have to switch to it (or open dashboard) unless you want to change playlists.

To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade, That is the Question

I've got a 15" C2D MBP (2.16 ghz) I got new in late 2006. I've upgraded it to Leopard, iLife and iWork '08, AppleCare, 2 GB RAM and a 250 GB HD.

I'm looking at the new 17" MBP with the hi-res display. After the education discount (my wife's a teacher), and with taxes, I'm estimating it'd cost about $3,000.

I figure I can get about $2,000 on eBay for my used 15" MBP.

The question I'm wrestling with is, is it worth the extra $1,000 for the faster processor, bigger, better screen, better video card (mine has a 128 mb Radeon1600), extra USB port, multitouch pad? I do some video editing (both iMovie and FCS), photography (just got Aperture 2), and a bunch of other junk.

Your opinions welcome. Thanks! :apple::)

quick question.... i know im in the wrong section to be asking this but wth...

the higher end 15" Macbook Pros start at $2599 in Canada. Since money is kind of an issue for me right now (university), would it be possible to buy the base model with the warranty and then get apple to upgrade it?
you know, after a while like a few months...

Very disappointing for those of us purchasing all of our media on blu-ray.

From Apple.com:
"The MacBook Pro 15- or 17-inch display is ideal for viewing high-resolution Photoshop images or HD movies. The optional 1920-by-1200 resolution on the 17-inch MacBook Pro offers a 30 percent increase in viewable area over the 1680-by-1050-resolution display. With more than half a million extra pixels at your disposal, you can view 1080- resolution HD video in all its glory — no need to resize the window to fit the screen."

Nice, but do I have to wait for that 1080p to download?

Was really hoping to make the jump from PC to Mac, but I'll hold off until this changes. :(

Disappointment again at Apple for refusing to jump into Blu-ray.

I think the Asus eee will have Blu-ray before :apple:

The Mac Pros will see Blu-Ray 1st I think. Unless at WWDC they put it in both MP and MBP (with new case design, like the MBA) and if you really want a blu-ray drive just buy an external or if you have a MP get an internal drive.

Dang, they didn't update the standard 1680 by 1050 screen on the 17" to LED, so now I'm stuck with the 1900x1200 screen if I want LED backlighting on the 17"

The 17" MacBook Pros and PowerBooks always had three USB ports. The new 17" MacBook Pros have the same three USB ports. The 15" models always had two USB ports, and they continue to only have two.

Settled.

OMG people....does anyone ever look at these things?

The PowerBook G4 17" [which a 1.67 Ghz is sitting right in front of me] has TWO USB ports, the 17" MBP has THREE and 15" MBP has TWO.

AAAAAAAARGH!

I sure hope so. I'll wait with my next MBP until there is at least a 500GB HD in there. 320GB would have had me thinking but this way I'll wait until the next revision.
This being such a small update really makes me think that there will be something else in like 4-5 months.

And when the 500GB is standard people will complain because the BTO Solid State Drives are too expensive and should be cheaper, or TB drives should be there, or that a 4 GHz processor isn't there, or some other dang complaint!!

I use my remote all the time. Not just while watching movies either. It's easier to change the sound that way than fn + *checks* f3/f4/f5 and much easier to control iTunes since you don't have to switch to it (or open dashboard) unless you want to change playlists.

But now you've got media controls on the keyboard

A decent update I reckon. A bump all round the specs. No overhaul, but thats because this is an update, not an overhaul. Anyone who was expecting something such from a quiet Tuesday update is insane. Wait for an event...

Luckily it doesn't outshine my two year old 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD original Macbook too much, which means I can put any money I save towards an iPhone instead, which would give me far more fun at less cost :D .

No MBP for me until the processor reaches at least 2.8Ghz and the hard drive reaches 500GB and, maybe, the 17"er goes LED. Only then would I get the real tangible "wow" factor from all that money spent. I think the gfx and RAM are already far superior to my Macbook to produce that "wow"ness

EDIT: Whoops, 17"er is already LED. :p

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

FINALY.

Only my second post here, but following MBP since september (MR with morning coffee), god knows how many posts i've read...

So, this is me saying thanks all for the entertainment and the weekly tuesday ritual. Getting MBP and never looking back (first Mac w00t). Good luck for all those still unhappy and lingering here in the forums, I don't think i'll be taking a peek any time soon!

And when the 500GB is standard people will complain because the BTO Solid State Drives are too expensive and should be cheaper, or TB drives should be there, or that a 4 GHz processir isn't there, or some other dang complaint!!

It isn't about complaining. It is about offering the biggest HD size currently available, which is clearly something Apple isn't doing.
