Funny how nobody across MR, Reddit or 9 to 5 Mac ever complained about the missing Top Sites feature in Big Sur, but when Catalina Safari is updated then a few people are seemingly mad. Seems like people just want to complain simply because it's Apple. That's how the recent news has been in the past month. SMH.

You're in denial if you haven't noticed the bugs, the frame drops, the netflix broken website on Safari. YouTube failing too hard, the poor extensions avaliable, etc.

…maybe that's because not everyone is on Big Sur betas? or not all of us are planning on installing Big Sur when it releases? Not everyone keeps up-to-date with all of the changes being introduced in the next iteration of macOS.

Imagine the most “advanced”, and “optimised” browser ever made by Apple can’t reproduce videos on YouTube without issues; Netflix is also broken, and who knows what else, and the extensions are still meh.

Back to Chrome/Firefox, and tbh those are safer.

Both YouTube and Netflix are fine on my 15" 2015 MBP.

Eh, no, we just did not beta test Safari or Big Sur for that matter. Maybe those who reviewed the betas did not care, or just wanted to talk about new features. This came through a regular software update, so now people who get it and use it in their everyday life (aka lots more than those who use betas), miss that feature.

'Top Sites' is a lot like 'Frequently Visited', it used to be populated with such sites, but you could also pin the ones you wanted to stay put - it was actually a quite great UI imho.

'Frequently Visited' in Safari 14 is quite bad actually! It's like it deliberately does not include any of the sites that were in my 'Top Sites' which are the sites that I actually visit the most! I launched the updated Safari only to find sites there that I had visited weeks ago and none of my regular ones! It's like 'Top Sites' is still there somewhere but like hidden or disabled!

Safari is my main browser. I used to have the 'Top Sites' grid as a New Tab (mostly pinned sites), and then the 'Favourites' bar as well, which besides some standard bookmarks, I use like a temp bookmark place as well (drag a url there, use it for a while/a few days, discard it later, hide the bar if needed etc) The Favourites bar is not what I wanted to see in my new Tab interface.

Now a workaround is to make a new folder in Bookmarks, place bookmarks for all the sites previously found in Top Sites there, go to Safari settings and select it under 'Favourites shows: ' (an option also found in iOS Safari, as people do not want the same Favourites on Mac and iPhone!)

So now I got a Favourites bar, which shows the actual Favourites folder, and a Favourites pane in the new Tab interface which shows another bookmarks folder... OK, it will do, but there is some cognitive disconnect there (what is Favourites anyway??) which does not make a great UX, I think. At least this new folder is synced via iCloud, Top Sites were not.

Humbug. Safari 14 still locks up tight when viewing Fox News.

What are your autoplay settings? I tested the site earlier and it locked up, just as you said. But since I set autoplay to "Stop Media with Sound" instead blocking it entirely, I have had no issues with pages becoming unresponsive.

Bugs. Bugs Bugs.
1. Show Bookmarks.
2. Under Favorites, create a New Folder.
3. Click to open the New Folder and Safari will crash.

There are literally hundreds of people on Reddit and several right here on MR that are using Big Sur Beta and hardly anyone has complained about Safari no longer having Top Sites. You're in the minority because hardly anyone has spoken loudly about Big Sur Safari so not many people care as much as you.

That's nice. I've been a Mac user exclusively for the past 25 years and I only use Safari and Top Sites was the least feature I cared about.

Interesting you'd say that because for everyone else they can't live without having Chrome as their main browser and due to the extensions and website compatibility which is why Apple updated Safari. They know people are gravitating towards Chrome due to the limitations of Safari.

There are lot more people on BS Beta then you may care to know about.

Eh buddy you're replying to the wrong person. I never said there are no bugs in Safari 14. In fact I haven't stated anything about it other than liking the anti-tracking feature.

Didn't know anything about the missing Top Sites feature in Big Sur, as I have no access to the new OS. I am not a Beta tester. Just reacting to the current Safari upgrade I downloaded today.

There are NO bugs in Safari 14, maybe undocumented features but no Moth's flying around. :)
Got to have some sort of humor now a days .

Hundreds... right. Compared to what? Millions on Mojave and Catalina that have already gotten or will soon get the Safari 14 update?

I'm not saying that everyone used the 'Top Sites' feature. Hardly. That's why it is gone, probably. But, as more and more regular (non-beta) users get this, the more will complain about it. It's pretty simple. Your SMH argument that 'people on the beta have not complained up to now, y u so whiny?' means nothing, cause for all I know (and care) most of those people do not use Big Sur beta + Safari 14 beta as their main OS + browser and look out for other things.

I also made a case where I think the 'Top Sites' feature is still there but hidden/disabled. I won't be surprised if it comes back in some form in the near future, as an option in the new Start Page or an improvement on the Frequently Visited pane.

Anyway, it was a neat feature, many seem to think.

I have Catalina, today I updated to Safari 14.0 and it works flawlessly, much better than previous versions. Unfortunately I lost my "Top Sites" but I reproduced it as described on this topic.

It's the one feature that no other browser has.
Well seeing as how many other companies copy Apple's design aspects and features of their OS and softwares I would say since other browsers don't offer Top Sites it's not a "must have" feature. There's a reason Apple removed it. That's probably the reason.

Google map became horribly unresponsive in Safari 14. Youtube also feels slower.

Might be a message from Apple.
YouTube has been horrible since installing Safari 14. I've restarted Safari several times as well as my MBP. CPU usage is through the roof. Sometimes the video will stop playing, but the timer and sound keep going. Even dropping the resolution to 480 doesn't fix it. There's obviously a problem.

Just updated to Safari 14 and now the app immediately crashes upon opening it. Any suggestions? I'm running Mojave and using Chrome to access the web. Thank goodness I didn't delete it!

Do you know what it's called? Can't seem to find it in Edge.

I'm guessing they are referring to Quick Links, which can be turned on as part of the New Tab page. Quick Links isn't quite the same as Top Sites but does give the ability to add/rearrange frequently visited pages, and will auto-populate with those sites you most often load.
