So how do I delete the screen shots before my mom reads all the emails I have been exchanging with my lover?
Why would your mom be snooping around on your computer in the first place? Haven't you heard of password-protection? Just use a different browser if you have an awkward privacy situation at home. Also note that you can easily delete the webpage previews by going to Safari -> Reset Safari and choosing to "Remove all webpage preview images."

for those of you with 1password issues:

update via 1password and it's once again integrated. agile team=WIN

that was really quick

Safari is not a core part. You can uninstall Safari without problems. This in contrast to not being able to uninstall IE on Windows. That said, I'm not aware of the reason it requires a reboot.

Not true. Part of the evidence given in the case against Microsoft's bundling of IE showed that IE was NOT that tightly integrated with core Windows code and could be uninstalled, as opposed to merely disabled. I remember using 98lite back in the day to do this just for yucks.

Some programs relying on HTML would be affected, but overall stability was not compromised. Windows Update from Vista onwards make IE's inclusion even more optional.

Windows 7 will launch in Europe without IE (unless plans change).

Still Can't Access a Local Web Page

Even after all the Safari 4.x updates, it still refuses to open a index.cfm web page locally as it used to do.

I am forced to use Firefox just to open a local web page with the .cfm extension. :-(

i think it's funny how people think it's the end of the world to simply reboot. LOL are there not more pressing issues to bitch and complain about? :D

It an interruption I'm not used to. Mac OS has its advantages, but I'm just used to better stability and reliability, and being able to just keep on doing my work instead of waiting for the most recent version of Safari or iTunes or whatever to install.

im having so many safari issues with this update. I install/ restart. it just wont open. It eventually force quits it self. I uninstall safari and re install the new update and the same issues.. what gives?!

it said my cooliris plug it MIGHT have caused the problems (which is weird as its a plug in that only comes into play WHEN i access it. Anyways, i delete it.. same stupid issue. I guess i have to time machine the 4.0.1 update i time machined before 10.5.8

wtf

So 4.0.3 does not include the tabs-on-top feature? So disappointing! I've not updated to any of the 4.0 releases because I was so happy with that option in the 4.0 beta and I don't want to give it up!

Amazing how I'm willing to forgo security updates just for that one feature!? Please, Apple, bring it back.

Both amazing and ignorant in my opinion.

Bless the guys at Agile, there is a patch for 2.9.22 taking it to 2.9.23, this fixes the problem.

Use the 'Check for Updates' function in 1Password...

Bruce

hey everyone,
I just found out if you have glims installed it won't work with safari 4.0.3 so you need to uninstall it with these terminal commands of safari won't start and it will just keep crashing.

sudo rm -rf /Library/InputManagers/Glims/
sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Glims/

It's not concern about a 36MBs. The problem is maintaining control of your computer.

Sometimes your browser gets redirected to websites that you don't want to go to. It might pose a problem if you are unable to delete X-rated images or other undesirable content from your hard drive.

As others have stated it is very easy to delete the images.
Safari > Reset Safari > Remove all Web Page previews

Safari is a core part of the OS. You can delete Safari from the Applications folder, but that does not mean it is gone. There are files elsewhere which are relied upon by OS X. These updates modify those. That is why a restart is required. The files must be able to be exclusively accessed for updating. That is why the system logs out and quits all non-essential processes when you preform the update.

I also downloaded Safari for Windows to replace IE-8 today.

Primary reason?

When you open a new tab in Safari, you're not greeted with a "market research has determined you are mentally retarded and therefore need help in figuring out what to do next" screen:

Can you name any of those files? The "required" ones for the OS that is. I know about Safari's other files in the Application Support and caches and such.

I have been told it is parts of Web Kit used by help viewer and things like that. Also Mail uses Web Kit to display HTML e-mail etc.

If you have access to a an older version of glims it still works.

Glims1b18 works here, while b19 crashes Safari at startup. Sadly I havn't found a download for this version, so I copied it over from time machine backup.

So, if you don't have Safari installed, does Mail not get these updates? Or perhaps a Mail update would handle it if the files hadn't been updated? Also, it seems on Windows, Safari updates also require a reboot. The same reasons couldn't be applied.

I'm not picking a fight or anything. I'm genuinely curious. I've seen other threads stating the WebKit idea, and that could be true. I'm not sure how integrated that is with the system.

Getting Ready to Dump Safari

I am getting ready to dump Safari and move over to Firefox or Camino.

Since v.4, Safari crashes at least once or twice a day. It seems to choke on Flash and Java content. Both Firefox and Camino load my iGoogle home page in half the time it takes Safari, or less. Both on all my Macs and on Vista.

If it wasn't for all my saved passwords, I'd have dumped it months ago.

Right now, the only browser that sucks worse than Safari is IE, but with IE it's all UI - it doesn't crash.

Anyway, if this update doesn't fix the crashes, Safari is gone (it spun fo about 20 seconds loading the macrumors page, most likely because of the ad. Stupid (Safari, not the ad, which pays for all this)).
