So, if you don't have Safari installed, does Mail not get these updates? Or perhaps a Mail update would handle it if the files hadn't been updated? Also, it seems on Windows, Safari updates also require a reboot. The same reasons couldn't be applied.

I'm not picking a fight or anything. I'm genuinely curious. I've seen other threads stating the WebKit idea, and that could be true. I'm not sure how integrated that is with the system.

No, you just wouldn't get the update, until the big unifier updates that include Safari like 10.5.8, or 10.4.11. After that, Security Updates could provide Webkit-only updates. But usually it will be via a 'Safari' update.

Safari is not a core part. You can uninstall Safari without problems. This in contrast to not being able to uninstall IE on Windows. That said, I'm not aware of the reason it requires a reboot.

Safari, the application, is not part of the operating system. It can be removed, as you say, but it uses WebKit, which is further comprised of WebCore and JavasScriptCore frameworks. Those are integral to the operating system.

Updates to Safari includes updates to these three frameworks underneath, which are loaded at system boot.

Technically, Apple could send out "WebKit" updates separately from Safari, but they don't. I guess part of the reasoning is to keep things in sync with the Windows distribution.

Why is it always more stable ? Can't they just once and for all make it completely stable and not ever have to make it more stable anymore ? :D

More stable is simply a marketing word. It only takes one crash of Flash to make it completely meaningless.

No problems for me. Did seem to take a bit too long to get to Mac Rumors, but that could just be me or the update settling in.

Thanks for that. It goes along with an article I found on the topic, which talked more about the frameworks and the various apps and functions that use them.

So essentially, Safari updates need a reboot because it needs to update core files, even though Safari itself isn't a core app, it simply uses them. Guess that makes the Safari updates a kind of drug mule (except of course it's not drugs in this case).

Thanks again for feeding my curiosity.

If you have access to a an older version of glims it still works.

Glims1b18 works here, while b19 crashes Safari at startup. Sadly I havn't found a download for this version, so I copied it over from time machine backup.

i'm okay for now. I guess Glims1b20 will fix the problems

"Clear Recent Searches" doesn't seem to be available anymore (in the top-right search field). It was buggy in previous versions of Safari 4, but now it's just totally gone.

Every time I have to reboot just to upgrade a browser, I get that much closer to wiping the whole thing and installing yellowdog. So much easier.

Of course, since my iphone requires itunes, I'm locked in. Sigh. Time to go get that awesome 0.0.1 upgrade.

Are you serious? A simple reboot is enough to convince you move to another OS? That's just pathetic.. Seriously.. it takes a few more minutes of your life.

after moving the safari .plist file to my desktop safari 4.0.3 FINALLY installs. However it lost support for inquisitor, and i was not seeing that. So i am happily useing 4.0.2 until these things get fixed.

Does anyone know if this fixes the fading webpage during scrolling after fast user switching bug?

EDIT: I suppose that is to which this refers: Fixes an issue that could cause web content to be displayed in greyscale instead of color

How about a fix for animated gifs. Does anyone else have issues with some sites or forums that have users with avatars with an animated gif? I always have to switch to firefox just to prevent from getting a frozen browser!!!

Both Glims and 1Password not working? Makes sense, but I'll have to sit this one out for a few days until the updates for those roll in.

1Password works fine, you just need to check for update, it'll update to the version that'll work.

I have contacted the developer and he will hopefully be responding shortly. I will post back later if there is anything. I have not found a way to re-enable it.

keywurl works fine - you just need to change the safari version in the bundle:

- in Finder navigate to ~\library\application support\SIMBL\plugins\
- right click on keywurl.bundle and select "Show package contents"
- go into "contents" folder and open "Info.plist" in a text editor or plist editor
- under the "SIMBLTargetApplications" key theres a MaxBundleVersion key. Change this from 5530 to 5532
- save the file
- restart safari.

Really, really amazed the animated gif beachballing still isn't fixed. Not good.

Glims still works fine for me after updating. And as already mentioned, there is an update to 1Password that makes it work again with Safari 4.0.3.

Hmmm anyone crashing a lot since this update? I've crashed 4x already in the last 2 hours.

Safari 4.0.3 - Not a good experience for me

So I tried to update to Safari 4.0.3, but now Safari won't even launch for me.

First error pop up

The application Safari quit unexpectedly.

Yadda yadda yadda

Ignore - Report - Relaunch

After I click Relaunch I get this one

Do you want to reset application settings for Safari?

Yadda yadda yadda

Do not relaunch - Reset and relaunch - Relaunch

Even if I click Reset and Relaunch it still will not start.

I have reinstalled Safari and I still cannot get it to open. Any suggestions? Is there any way to roll the update back?

Thanks,

Chris

I'd say it was snappier but i'd be lying its crawling for me for some reason
