wont buy it.

no way to use it without apple's earphones?
i break my earphones so quickly.and plus those earphones dont stay in your ears.
bad bad idea

Apparently not. Another blunder, cheers Apple

The previous dock was just a USB cord with a headphone jack, so I see no reason that it wouldn't work. I am not sure of this, but if not it would seem to be a change for the sake of change rather than one that added a function.

The more i think about this... the more it becomes apparent that they've reeeeally messed up.

In the video the PC voice sounds better than the mac voice FFS!

I wanted to buy a shuffle.. genuinely.. I want to run to the gym and let my very lightweight iPod just shuffle away on my tshirt...

Now I can't even press play with my current headphones!

What are they thinking!!!?!?!?

I feel like we all agree today that this was a total flub. Its a nice feeling actually!

But, then, sad

I actually wonder, is this because of Jobs absence, like so many us (myself included) are "wishing", or is this just a pathetic move that has been on the books for months???

I've just thought of a reason why the lack of controls could be a good thing. Say you're throwing a party and you've made a custom playlist for it... But during the party, impatient (drunk) people skip to the next song without asking anyone else, thus annoying people enjoying that song. Or you made the playlist, but someone goes and puts on a Green Day album instead. Now, you can just plug it into the stereo and say "Sorry, can't control it!"

higher cost, no buttons, no colors, and only on apple earbuds... well i won't be getting one.

i do like the glossy clip.

How do I use my running headphones, Apple earbuds are worthless for exercise since they fall out. Shuffles are THE iPod for running so this doesn't make sense.
^^^^^^
Worth quoting.

The supplied white buds always fall out of my ears — and yes, I know they fit some ears, just not mine… ;)

The in-ear buds would have been great.

Oh, Apple. Sometimes they make the most perverse choices.
:(

Holy hell, the world's energy crisis would be over if someone figured out a way to harness all the nerd rage on the Mac Rumors forums whenever Apple announced a new product.

Say it with me: "Apple's lowest-end MP3 player is not targeted at the enthusiast market. There are thousands of other sub-$100 MP3 players. I can find one that fits my needs, whatever they may be!"

Just repeat that over and over, maybe eventually it will sink in.

This is not an MP3 player for people who need to use their $300 custom fit Shure ear buds.

This is not an MP3 player for people who have other weird headphone requirements.

This is not an MP3 player for people who require FLAC playback, a screen, the thought of a voice angers you, or any of the other ridiculous complaints in this thread.

Yup, thats exactly what Apple was thinking too!:D

More to come

So, I just came back from a ski trip where I was listening to iPhone tunes while skiing. Of course, I had to protect my precious from the elements. I told my kid I need voice control, or some kind of interactive menu. Voilà! I bet apple includes this in iPhone os!

Bummer about the headphones, but then I doubt 90%+ of the target market for the iPod Shuffle really care. Hopefully we'll see some third party phones with controls on.

Of course I'm guessing Apple's in ear headphones will be fine since they have the remote, and they are excellent headphones, but the price is out of reach for an iPod Shuffle buyer (expensive, not overpriced).

that's the point.. who is it an mp3 player for?? no one will buy this.

The new shuffle is way too big. Apple should have put the device into the earphones where the remote is located.

Who started this fetish obsession with "thinner" and "smaller" at Apple ?

People are entitled to bitch all they want about how Apple got it wrong here, and certainly nobody will be forced to buy one, but I think in the marketplace, Apple have just hit a home run with a product that will sell in huge numbers even in the current economic climate.

What do you think of the new iPod Shuffle? Anyone upgrading?

Seems like a cool idea and it's super small! I want to see how well you can navigate playlists, etc. If it works well though I am definitely going to be tempted!

I don't think apple put the controls on the ear phones to stop people buying their own head phones.

It makes sense to put the controls on the ear phones. It's easier to use and it makes teh shuffle itself less complex and smaller.
I use my headphones to control my iphones ipod player when I'm running and it works fine. It's just not practical to fumble around for controls on the unit itself.

You have to watch the video tour to learn about the voice over feature. I can see the benefit for play lists -you just listen to a list of play lists until you hear the one you want. I can't see what the song voice over does though?

People are resistant to real change and I honestly think this will be great if you are running though

I really don't think this is design for designs sake. It makes it cheaper (less enginnering on the shuffle to add controls so lower component cost) AND more convenient.

A huge huge hit once people see its easy to use..

Just like how no one will buy the MacBook Air, right?
