No, but even a pair of $20 Sonys is a vast improvement over the stock Apple headphones

Like headphones that stay in, don't cause pain and don't sound like a 1970s transistor radio from East Germany.

Wow, it's a good thing there are thousands upon thousands of MP3 players to choose from on the market today then, huh?

I feel like we all agree today that this was a total flub. Its a nice feeling actually!

But, then, sad

I actually wonder, is this because of Jobs absence, like so many us (myself included) are "wishing", or is this just a pathetic move that has been on the books for months???

First, any products coming out now have been in development for months. So he approved it.

If anything he realized just how piss poor the new products were going to be and decided to sick out instead of stand behind them. Yeah, I am being partly serious. 90s all over again

How about voice RECOGNITION? Instead of waiting for it to go through all my playlists, I should be able to SAY a playlist or song title/artist (and advance to that song in playlist/song order).

Also, it would be nice if the control portion had a connector for a different set of headphones/earbuds. Same for the iPhone and iPod touch earbuds/controller.

that's the point.. who is it an mp3 player for?? no one will buy this.

A bold statement.

This will sell by the bucket load, of course it will.

And who's it for? The vast majority of people who are looking for an mp3 player, that's who. Most people wouldn't even think about the quality of Apple's headphones, they'd just use them!

Hmmm... it says it requires iTunes 8.1, so I guess we should be expecting an update soon. :)

Ha I just noticed the same thing. Guess we should see an update this week sometime.

Put me on the "We can't use our own headphones with it? Forget it then." camp.

Also, why do people keep talking about the price of the new iPod shuffle vs the price of 3rd party headphones? The iPods are targeted not only at price ranges but also target different usages. I have a 2nd gen iPod shuffle and an iPod touch, and different situations call for different iPods.

Also, I can't find the 2nd generation iPod shuffle anywhere on Apple's Canadian website. No images, no links, no mention of it. Also not available in the clearance section. Apple didn't keep the old model, they replaced it.

I'll have to go buy another 2nd gen iPod shuffle at a local store, just in case my current one fails. Hopefully they'll be on sale soon, too.

Not my thing, but I have told one of my friends about it as she recently accidentally (well, i assume it was accidentally) put her nano in the wash.

For her, it's great as she was using her nano just like a shuffle, so the extra storage is welcome and she's pleased about the playlists... less keen about it 'speaking' to her.

Hmm design looks ok from what i can tell in pictures. The only thing is i have funny shaped ears and the standard earphone type doesnt fit me when im walking. Now running is another matter altogether. I dont mind the controls on earphones part but they should have supplied the in ear phones instead. Or ones that hook around your ear.

I think the lack of controls will turn out to be not such a big deal. This shuffle is probably geared towards people who don't care what headphones they use as long as they can listen to some music and not pay a lot of money for a full sized iPod. For those of you who have a problem with the headphones, get a nano.

Wow, it almost sounds like the iPod Shuffle is not the product you need if DJ-ing parties is how you use an MP3 player. Now, this might be some really advanced thinking here so try to stay with me on this... Maybe, I don't know, try shopping around for a different MP3 player?

You people are absolutely hilarious.

I didn't say one would buy it if the sole purpose was to DJ parties. But if you own it already, and occasionally use it for music at parties... Better than people fiddling with your iPod Classic, or even spilling drinks on it.

Voice-recognition requires a lot CPU-power. It's not satisfactory even on proper computers with multi-gigaherz multicore-CPU's. how could it work on a portable mp3-player?

it's good enough for your average 128kbit mp3s i'd say

No, you see, as a true audiophile I only listen to Apple Lossless encoded music, which I rip myself using a specially crafted vacuum tube powered record player using ONLY absolute virgin records fresh from the packaging as the original audio source. Of course everything is hooked together with the highest grade monster cable...

It is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE to me that I cannot listen to these high quality recordings using Apple's low-end MP3 player.

So, you want your portable electronics to be BIGGER? Here's something you might be interested in:
I think he forgot to follow it up with "...at the expense of usability"
I feel similar. Yes it's smaller, but works with only their proprietary headsets.
This is my sentiment concerning the MacBook Air.

I LOVE IT AND AGREE! What kind of weird alien ears do you people have that the ear buds won't fit? And as far as quality goes, you will NEVER find a pair of $30 headphones that sound as good as Apple's.

Oh they fit me fine, but they fall out when I go trail running / mountain biking.

Plus: THEY WEAR OUT and cost too much to replace.

I wear cheap head-band phones I can throw away and replace. I'm certainly not an enthusiast when it comes to listening to music when working out. I just want something that works. Apple doesn't want my money.

"Oh no, the iMac is too heavy to carry!"
Buy a laptop.

"Oh no, the Mac Mini doesn't come with a monitor!"
But an iMac.

"Oh no, I have to use earbuds with a speaker to give vocal commands? Why can't I use my nice headphones?"
Buy the regular shuffle.

Good god, people. This isn't hard.

Yeah, I'll stick to my first gen 2GB iPod nano then :)
And the wife with her 1GB pink clip shuffle.
