Did anybody ever complain that the previous Shuffle was too big, or too difficult to use?

This thing is useless, IMO. They solved a size problem that was never an issue. They just took away from the usability.

I'm interested in the sound card...

The second generation shuffles did not have as good of a sound card as the first shuffles.

These little things are nice but I can't even stand the controls on my iPhone ear plugs.

I'm sticking with my big stick 1st Gen shuffle 1 gig. It's the best shuffle for me...

You mean the DAC?

Press. Three. Times.

What could possibly be more intuitive than that? I don't know how people can't understand the remote. I swear nobody I've talked to knows what a 4-click, 7-click, or 11-click does either.

Speaking of which, has anybody figured out where they store the chocolate syrup that comes out on an 11-click?

I'm really excited about what this bodes for the future. I can't wait for the next revision with no headphone jack at all. Only $50, but it'll store all the music you can download to it! Of course there will still be complainers. Well duh, being able to hear the music is a high-end feature! If you want to be able to actually hear it, then you're clearly not in the target market.

MAN! You just owned Steve so hard, I hope you had the courtesy to send him some flowers at the hospital because he's going to be in critical condition in the BURN WARD after that one!!!

How?

I do not see this as a blunder. I bet the carping when the Mac Mini was announced was almost as bad...

The idea of the new Shuffle is built around 'playlists' and if you don't use them, then there might be issues. I hope that there is a way to get it to just play what's in it without playlists. I don't use them and prefer to just play an artist or album and then move to another one if I need to. Having no controls and the 'voice over' function is a tradeoff that might just work wonders. Notice that the voice for PC synched Shuffles sounds like a constipated robot where the Mac synched Shuffle voice sounds better. Another reason to buy Mac?

The headphone issue is another thing. Is the adapter still available that converts the 'fat' jack to the skinny non controlled headphones? I wonder if it will play without the Apple ear buds installed... Will the 'in-ear' buds even work on the new Shuffle with that microphone built in. I know they already don't work with the iPhone. You can't hear yourself talk through them.

My feeling is that Apple is vearing into a territory that they shouldn't want to go. That is making devices that are incompatible with the accessories of the other devices... The iPhone was a precursor to that. It's incompatible (but can be adapted) with third party headphone/mic sets. Now the newish (and very comfortable) in-ear buds are incompatible with the iPhone despite having a microphone, and now the new ipod Shuffle is incompatible with all the earlier ipod accessories. I wonder if the in-ear buds will work with the new Shuffle...

Don't piss off your 'religious base' Apple...

For the record, I think that the new Shuffle will be a hit. It will start off slower maybe but it will succeed... I'll buy one.

If you actually look at the product page, at the bottom, there's a nice picture and a description that clearly indicates they are compatible with the 3rd Gen Shuffle. That was sooooooo hard.

I wasn't whining about how Apple screwed me and I know that you can still get the older models, but what happens when those are sold out? What happens when they are discontinued? I am not the only one - as others have posted - that has a child who has given up allowances and earned extra money just for this purchase.

Oh, NOES! Apple won't make everything they currently make forever and sometimes people won't like the new things as much as they liked the old things!

AAPL is teh DOOOOMED!

Film at eleven.

Cheers

Jim

Maybe someone is in the market for a shuffle and already has a decent set of ear phones. While the prev gen is still available for now how long will that be the case

I hope they keep the old shuffle design as an option. Since the addition of genius playlists to iTunes, I use the shuffle more often than any of my other iPods because it's as simple as choosing 1 song I want to listen to and pressing genius to add another 99 recommended songs and then syncing.

But I cannot stand Apple's headphones. I have a pair of Q Jays and a pair of Audio Technica buds that I use, and I cannot stand going back to the white buds.

Pity with all the information available on the internet, whiners still can't spend eight seconds finding things out for themselves:

Mr Joswiak also said that Apple had been working with accessory makers to ensure iPod shuffle controls are built into a wide variety of new headphones, such as sports earphones.

Link. Third-party earphones will be compatible with the new Shuffle. So, most of the complaining and bitching in this thread, and presumably most of the negative reps against it, are negated by a single quote from Apple.

MR could have quoted a little more of what the guy said to cut out the crappy complaining.

Then buy a Nano.

This is like people complaining that a Mac Mini won't run Final Cut Pro.

When you buy the cheapest product, it won't do everything.

Way to be dismissive.

I know it is not an essential purchase, but an 8 year old daughter saving $50 for this purchase was an accomplishment. Now she has to wait even longer, turning this into a possible negative lesson for her.

His response wasn't dismissive at all; it was simply a fact. If it's not the form factor you (or your kid) want, then you're/she's not the target market.

I can't use earbuds, myself, so I feel her frustration. (They fall out of my right ear all the time, for some reason), but she can get the previous generation, which still has buttons and so doesn't require the earbuds.

not being able to use my own, better-quality headphones is a dealbreaker for me. guess I'm not their target market...

no more 2GB shuffles

I really don't like the loss of the click wheel AT ALL. (On my iPod touch, duh; but on a shuffle... that is itself a little clippy-thing that you can clip where it is convenient to reach the buttons... no more buttons??). But to each their own, and maybe some folks will find this appealling.

What REALLY has me saddened is that it appears the the 2GB shuffles are not for sale anymore/discontinued. I was planning on ordering a pair of those (one for self, one for a gift) and I really really really always like the idea of the free engraving. So while I'm sure I can still pick up 2GB shuffles elsewhere, the lack of engraving makes that a no-go.

Had I known, I would've ordered shuffles last night. Thanks Apple! :<

.... any chance of a 4GB 2nd gen shuffle in the works? (probably not, eh?)

Should I just buy engraved 1GB shuffles while I still can??

The "Still available" tag on the 1GB shuffles on Apple's store sounds like a threat/warning.

At that size, why don't they just put the guts in the ear buds themselves and a single wire looped between the two.

Fixing issues that aren't there...

Like the prior Nano and the new one.

Making it longer/taller just made the case manufacturers happy but maybe that was the main plan. They could have added the improvements in the prior size I'm sure. With the Shuffle, there probably wan't such a large market for cases I'm think. I don't ever recall seeing one.

they will sell just alot, but 2nd thing I thought was my wires are usually tucked under my shirt.

YOU'RE IN LUCK!!!! If you actually watch the video, you'll notice the control is located below the right ear.

Who would think that Apple would have thought of this? God they are just Geniuses.

No in-ear headphones...

I just now realized I won't be able to use my great :apple: in-ear's...
Instead of silver and black, they should have a headphone option.
Those standard :apple: headphones are the worst... They don't stay in your ears while walking, running, biking and they don't isolate the surrounding sound.
I already have a 1G Shuffle but I actually bought a Nano for the treadmill and my bike just because it has playlists...
Good move on the size and features but again :apple: is forcing us to only ONE choice... Pisses me off...

I don't see how you apologists can sit here and say that its ok to put a proprietary set of headphones on the entry level music player. If anything it should be the exact opposite, basic and cheap for the entry level and advanced head phones with additional controls on the high end units.

ugly proprietary junk.

Sticking with the old one. Apple headphones don't function well in the gym where a lot of users utilize the cheapest flash iPod with 3rd party earphones.

Apple still trying to slyly bleed every last penny out of its customers. Also, announcing the name of a song on your own iPod seems like a negligable feature addition.

Im sure it will sell well, but it has more to do with new product and iPod recognition rather than revolutionary design.
