They sell iPhone headphones with the in-line mic and button for $3.50. I mixed my Deal Extreme headphones up with my real Apple headphones, and no one I've been able to find can tell them apart.

Believe it or not, you can buy headphones somewhere other than the Apple Store.

It wouldn't surprise me if they start stocking these headphones at a similar price in the near future.

Okay, you got me, that looks AWESOME. Even the reviews are good.

They've officially and completely lost all connection to reality.

Welcome to Apple world where you use our products OR ELSE!!!!

As iPhone users, we've gotten used to Apple holding back a host of features that we should have had a year ago.

Ditto for iMac buyers - reduced specification at higher prices!

Glad I've got my iPhone ... I bet the next incarnation will come out with a black and white screen, 10 year contract and a £100 price increase!!!

apple knows what they're doing, and they know their overall customer base. i probably know about 40 people who have ipods. of those, i know 2 that don't use apple headphones.

the reality is most people don't care that much. (though you wouldn't know that by reading these forums)

i would assume that on apple's cheapest iphone, the statistics of those who just use the included headphones are much, much higher.

Then buy a Nano.

This is like people complaining that a Mac Mini won't run Final Cut Pro.

When you buy the cheapest product, it won't do everything.

Yeah but the point of the shuffle is for those who need it for an active lifestyle. I wouldnt take a nano running with personally as i think its overkill for what i need. The shuffle is perfect for gym/running needs or at least the prev gen was. Maybe in time they will offer clip on ear phones with the in line control feature.

Removing the controls is just bizarre. I do probably 98% of my listening in the car, so this unit would be completely unusable for me. I assume apple or someone else will make a cable with buttons, but that still seems like an odd choice.

Jeez...does everyone want wine with their cheese? The older models are still available. If you want a new one, buy that. If you want the older one, buy that.

Yes the price is similar but that is just the way things are. I think its an interesting concept, but Im not buying.

"wine with their cheese"? I think you meant "cheese with your wine".

I like the idea of buttons on ear phones too but i think they should offer in ear buds as standard

They are standard when you buy the Shuffle I just checked. It says on the Apple website that they come in the box.

The problem is you are stuck with Apple headphones when you want to listen to your shuffle. You cant use other headphones because most of them dont have the volume controls.

Wow, I knew MR was filled with sheeple, but I had no idea it was this bad.

Guys, LOOK AT WHAT THE $%^& APPLE IS SELLING! VoiceOver, are you kidding? Do you want to sit there and wait for the computer to read out your song titles? I saw this on Wired and seriously thought it was a satire, like the Onion's MacBook video.

I don't see how you apologists can sit here and say that its ok to put a proprietary set of headphones on the entry level music player. If anything it should be the exact opposite, basic and cheap for the entry level and advanced head phones with additional controls on the high end units.

Basic and cheap = People aren't buying different headphones. They use what comes with it.

But if that's still not good enough, I guess you missed thsi:

Link. Third-party earphones will be compatible with the new Shuffle.

All the new features sound awesome... I was going to buy one to use in my car... but then I realized without some other remote solution (is one even available?), I can't use it for my car.

Ah well, I guess Apple won't get my money... again.

Actually, I think I like Apple's latest string of not getting its act together... saves me money! :D

EDIT: I see they'll be making an 'adapter cable' ... but for something so small, it kind of defeats the purpose? The previous shuffle had all the controls in the device. I want the new features in the old form factor...

I'm interested in the sound card...

The second generation shuffles did not have as good of a sound card as the first shuffles.

These little things are nice but I can't even stand the controls on my iPhone ear plugs.

I'm sticking with my big stick 1st Gen shuffle 1 gig. It's the best shuffle for me...

I heard that it has a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 in there. Amazing how they fit an ISA card into that tiny thing.

Anyone remember this SNL skit?

The audience laughed pretty hard when this SNL skit from a couple years ago made fun of how small Apple iPods were getting. "Ladies and gentlemen, introducing...and I'm thrilled about this...the iPod micro."

I have the Apple In-Ear Headphones and I think they're great. I use 'em with my iPhone at the office, and with my 3G iPod nano at the gym. I'm seriously thinking about getting this new shuffle because the remote controls don't work with the nano, and they're way more convenient than the controls on the device itself.

I don't think Apple is discontinuing the iPod shuffle 2G. It's still listed as a first-class citizen on their iPod comparison chart. Deemphasized? Sure. But not discontinued specifically for the people who don't like or can't use the headphone controls. I think that's why there was no big fanfare for this new shuffle -- and on a Wednesday, no less! Who's ever heard of such a thing?

Do you mean the earphones or in ear buds? The type i meant was like ear plugs that sit in your eat and dont fall out easy?

Don't like it?

If this many fan bois hate it, it will probably be a very successful product.

Foam covers?

Whatever happened to the foam covers for the ear buds?

I loved them to death! The classic shape ear buds stay in my ears like magic with the foam covers installed and they are much more comfortable too. I have a stash from earlier ipod purchases and greave when I lose one.

Looks sweet. Never been the one to need a shuffle because I don't go to the gym or do anything too physical, but this looks so perfect for those who do!

The earphone remote is pretty neat. Sucks for those who hate the stock earphones for ergonomic/cosmetic reasons, but those who are complaining about how they can't use their ultimate earphones for ultimate sound is in the wrong market: If you want audio quality, you shouldn't even be looking at iPods, let alone the iPod Shuffle.

But man, this thing is tiny!!!

So put it over your shirt instead, problem solved. This isn't rocket-science people!

There's a reason I wear the cable _under_ the shirt: hiking, yard work, painting, housework, riding a bicycle on a track ... that's when I use my iPod. And in all of these it's rather detrimental to the main activity to go and strangle yourself with a garrote.

The howling you hear is because, apart from the crappy stock headphones, the shuffle and the nano were at the perfect spot right there were they were (and are, in case of the nano). Lightweight, flash-based, long battery life, ease of use. Those things are bought by the casual user, not the Apple fanboi or the gadget freak. Taking /away/ functionality is simply a dick move.

Uh, did you ever stop to think that maybe most of the people who buy iPods just use the included headphones? I mean, the white headphone cord is a god damn fashion statement these days. Who outside of MacRumors weirdos buys an $80 MP3 player then spends another $40 on headphones?

That article says they will be working with third parties to make new headphones with built in controls. That will definitely add cost and limit options.

I said earlier, I think the idea of controls in the headphones is a great idea, I just don't see why they had to remove all controls from the player itself. It makes a great additional feature.

And I also agree with what many people here said, people who buy cheap music players do often get other earbuds / headphones. I work at a university so I probably see more music players in a day than most people and I say well over half of the people with various iPods have third party earbuds.
