Really interesting is the list of languages which voiceover now seems to support…

But the Monopoly tactics of making you buy the crappy Apple Earphones really stinks… Like many of Apples recent Products…

Note: Apple has just announced that they will be eliminating usb ports from the next generation of macbooks and macbook pro's in favor of the usb/headphone jack combo.

PS: I just made that up. :)

aren't there "buttons" on the new headphones? look at chord of the right headphone piece.

Obviously he meant they took the buttons off of the actual device, meaning you can't use the shuffle without apple headphones.

My guess is that apple simply can't afford to sell shuffles at £31 anymore in this current economic market.

If true, a new shuffle of similar design would have to be re-priced higher as has been the case in numerous other products made in the far east (im looking at you canon!), which would not look well considering that apple consumers are used to upgrades that give more at any given price point.

The answer: to introduce a new product at a slightly higher price point and market its lack of features as beneficial, rather than detrimental, to the consumer.

Enter the new shuffle, no screen, no controls, less battery life, but more memory (the cost of 4gigs now is very low) and a higher price tag. To make, the 3rd gen must be somewhere close to the 2nd, but apple are able to charge twice as much for it.

Very disappointed apple, very.

This is what happens when Steve Jobs isn't at the helm. I bet history is going to repeat itself all over again. The next time Microsoft infuses money into Apple though, we won't have Steve Jobs to see the Phoenix rise.

Someone please tell me Steve Jobs has found the fountain of youth.

The cost of a shuffle in Australia has gone up from $65 to $129.

Apples new plan for the economic downturn - DOUBLE the price of EVERYTHING!

Good strategy.

The 1GB, 2nd gen shuffle is 55$CAD, the new 4GB, 3rd gen shuffle is 99$CAD.

If we were to go by storage capacity alone, it's half cheaper than before. ;)

I would have kept the old 2nd gen shuffle and put the stainless steel clip on it. Silver and black only, which seems to be the new Apple.

Don't forget that the 2nd gen shuffle is listed as "Still available", so if you want one get it before they're all gone!

Looks great. But... while I could deal with not having a screen, now having the buttons on the headphone cord is just... ugh.

Will it work with the new Apple In-Ears, that presumably have the same buttons... ?

But yeah. This makes it pointless for running. I use Sennheiser PMX70 sport headphones. I'll stick with my old shuffle.

When did Steve take this leave? January? Is it even possible that they came up with the idea, figured out the design, produced the shuffle all within that span? C'mon... don't be ridiculous. Steve also said he'd still be involved in strategic decisions and I have to imagine the launch of a new iPod (even if it is just the shuffle) is a strategic decision.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here.

better hope my 2nd gen lasts i have never even bothered to open my apple headphones as they are worthless

boycott the new shuffle!

It's not pointless for running, you just have to make adjustments (an adapter and using buttons on the headphones rather than the player itself). I've been running with my iPhone recently (sold my nano because it seemed dumb to have the iphone and nano at the same storage) and I never thought that I would like to use the buttons on the headphones to switch songs while I was running but I actually prefer to use the buttons on the headphones now.

not digging the controls on the headphone

what was wrong with the old shuffle?

scratch that, what was wrong with the stick shuffle? at least with that one i could use it as a usb drive lol

I mean worthless is a bit of an exaggeration. There are definitely better headphones but I've got to assume that iPod headphones are as good as - if not better - than most pre-packaged headphones.

You can use the second one as USB drive, can you not? it's just not as easy to do so.

Yeah, this would never have happened with Steve's knowledge, as we all know how he loves buttons. /s

It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul in the size department. What's the point of removing the the controls, only to have them be elsewhere? You haven't actually saved any bulk that way. You've gained nothing. But Apple gains one more sale from those people who have third-party headphones.

The cable is taking up space anyhow. By moving the controls there, yes it's possible to better optimize space utilisation.

While we're on the subject of whining for whining, I have this to say : Apple screwed up big time by not offering a LCD screen. I want a iPod Shuffle video so hence I am entitled to it and Apple should provide it, snap snap.

it's just not as easy to do so.

We have a winner :p

I do love the juxtaposition of polished stainless steel and anodized aluminium.

I'm anxiously awaiting a marketing video starring Jony Ive where he proclaims, "I can't think of... any other way we could have made the new iPod shuffle... any simpler". ;)

Took 3 seconds to search. Here is one from Shure that has 4 pins
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZPOPIS/
it is stated in a review that it works with iPod touch.

There are adapters with buttons and microphone
that will allow you to connect any headphones to it.
It looks like we are not communicating.

This has nothing to do with 4 pin connectors. It has to do with a remote that works like the one needed for the Shuffle.

BTW, loose the large font. Screaming does not prove your point.

The new USB cable from Apple.
The 2nd Gen Shuffle used a 4 pin USB cable and had a 4 pin dock.

I wonder if the current Shuffle headphones will work with the 2nd Gen Shuffle? Curious.

The next version of the Shuffle will simply be a pair of earphones with buttons on the cord. They'll attach to nothing.
Hope not since it will use Apple's earphones.

no way to rewind?
Is this correct? There is no way to go back to the beginning of a song or to the prior song?

For working out, people have special earphones that work with their ear shape and will not fall off easily. I happen to have the Sony rubber loop-hanger type and am very happy with the fit. Some of the over-the-ear models don't stay on that well, but these do (for me...for someone else, another brand might be better). This issue is completely separate from the issue of sound quality.
Agree. I've tried many different headphones over the years to find ones that stay in during working out, skiing, etc.

No it didn't. A 1GB shuffle is still $65. A 2GB shuffle is still $89.

Problem is they're running out quick smart...

didnt have time to read through the posts, but anyone else noticed this is a piece of SH:apple:T?!?!
You cant plug it into your stereo, better headphones, nothing...
JUST iPod heaphones. What a piece of ass.

The adapter had better be $5, otherwise I'll be grabbing a non-Apple music player.

oo didn't know this was coming out...
Looks pretty cool, and its so small! how do they fit 4gb, 3.5mm socket, the other stuff and 3 hour battery life in that tiny thing.

Price is the same as the other updates... Too much. Looks quite stylish, new features are cool but nothing to make me buy it for £60...
