I am surprise that they do not have the backward "button" when they have forward "button"

Apparently you double-click for forward, and triple-click for backward. They probably figured that an extra button would only confuse people

I'd be wanting to know how you get to the start of the song list in non-shuffle mode, which was a triple-click in the previous gen, I actually use that sometimes.

No intention of buying one here, the old one works just fine and can accept proper earbuds instead of those tinny fally-outy Apple ones. They really need to release a remote adaptor for the masses and masses of people who want to use them with their other earbuds, speaker systems, car inputs etc.

I will admit, if they phased out the 2nd gen shuffle it wouldn't be the end of the world as the newer Nano is an excellent option for those who want finer control and such like.

A common scenario will be:

Someone buys 3rd Gen Shuffle.
Accidentally breaks headphones, or loses them.
Ends up with an unusable brick until they can replace the headphones, which will no doubt be a similar price to buying a whole new Shuffle.

I wasn't whining about how Apple screwed me and I know that you can still get the older models, but what happens when those are sold out? What happens when they are discontinued? I am not the only one - as others have posted - that has a child who has given up allowances and earned extra money just for this purchase.

No sarcasm intended, but perhaps I did miss something, but where does it say that third party earbuds will work?

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children

I don't really think Apple are aiming at the 8 year old girl market to be honest, and this isn't something that's going to cause a huge drop in sales.

Also to everyone complaining about "Baawww no 3rd party headphones" maybe you should look on the store and you'll see that companies have already released headphones with the inline remote attached.

Personally I'm thinking I'll buy one of these for myself just because they're so god damn cute.

Way to be dismissive.

What about those of us with young children have been saving their allowance for months to get an iPod but the Apple earbuds are too large and uncomfortable for their 8 year olds? Now they have to get an adapter in order to use earbuds that fit or save for a few more months to get a nano that they do not need the capacity of.

I know it is not an essential purchase, but an 8 year old daughter saving $50 for this purchase was an accomplishment. Now she has to wait even longer, turning this into a possible negative lesson for her.

Am I the only one to think that if this is the case they should probably still be listening to a portable stereo or CD player?

I am all for change and making it smaller, but grey and dark grey? Also, forcing you to use their earbuds, which I can't use cause they always fall out of my ear, is just rediculous. what the hell Apple? The last gen was amazing... at least put a logo on the front or something...

Anyone watching the guided tour?... the voiceover sounded very computerized. They should have gotten Tom from the Kindle to do the voice over. The "Ting Tings"....

Marrying the headphones with the player, not cool.

This is absolutely a case of fixing what ain't broke.

Left Handed

As usual the world seems to revolve around right handed people, so that if you hapen to be left- handed its more difficult to use the controls.

no just being honest.....i run a lot (like actual running not walking fast)...so i physically can not find the buttons on the shuffle when it is up on my shirt neck-line..it will throw my whole stride off.

That's why it's called the shuffle! Clip it to your waistband, run the cord through your shirt, and use headphones that isolate at least some of the environmental noise and don't fall out and hurt. Push play in order, or shuffle, and if you absolutely must skip a song (why did you put it on there in first place?) you can reach the nice big control ring just fine :)

and i dont have a problem with the stock headphones i have now..

Freak ;)

standard price of $80, wasn't it cheaper before for the 2 gig, and why would they remove it?

Whatever, this is really goofy to not have buttons on the damn product, forcing people to wear those headphones...basically forces people to step up to a nano.

Of course the truth is most iPod users use the Apple headphones, so it's only an issue for a tiny minority.

That is NOT true. I see about 50-people a day in my gym and 45 of them have Ipods - how many do you think have stock headphones? Only a couple. Granted my sample size is small, but to say most use stock headphones is silly, and simply not true. I have not found ONE person who actually likes the stock headphones and feels they are comfortable. Not one.

I see (not you post) the condicending and arrogant postings have begun as to why those who think the design is sill are wrong. I needed a small 4GB iPod for the gym and one for my kids - this does NOT fit the bill and nether does the Nano based on cost - for those without kids - they can be hard on things and $80 is OK for kids, but not $150 for the Nano. Silly, simply silly Apple. Thanks again. I can only wait to see the over-priced, over-hyped touch pad next quarter. If will probably require a neural implant to use!

D

and i dont have a problem with the stock headphones i have now... so not everyone hates them..and arn't these new headphones with the shuffle..the new improved headphone apple was selling?

so having the controls on the cord thats bouncing around while you are running will make it easier to change the songs? hmmm

Clearly you've never driven a BMW. A Ford might get you to Point B, but a BMW will get you to Point B with a huge grin and give you the desire to just keeping going to point Infinity.

By your logic why by a Mac or fine bottle of wine or go to a nice restaurant when an eMachine, rot gut, and McDonalds have, respectively similar functionality? Just because McDonalds sells .99 hamburgers doesn't mean a good $40 filet is overpriced.

Well, guess that flew over your head...

But yes, I have driven BMWs. Not saying they're bad... but I'd rather have an Audi. BMW's interiors are much too bland, boring and over-whored for my taste.

This is simply great, I bike a lot and use my Shuffle then and I find it hard to press the right button many times. (I always have the shuffle in a plastic bag in the back pocket of my biking jersey to protect it against sweat and rain and I have the cord running inside my jersey so I can't take it up.)
I love how Apple keeps innovating even though this is nothing earth shattering.

Nice to see more disk space, but without controls on its surface, it won't replace my old Shuffle which I got hooked to my car stereo. :(

Here we go again thinking that MacRumors is a true representation of Apple product buyers. If Apple catered for what we wanted, it would be such a niche market that Apple would disappear up its own backside.

Next time you're on a train, look around you. The majority of iPod users stick with their supplied 'phones. Their loss, and I feel for them, but these are the majority who influence Apple's strategies, not us.

I don't know about the rest of you but i often skip back and fourth between songs on my shuffle. So with this new shuffle if i want to skip seven songs back do I have to tap the center button twenty one times?

Putting USB through audio jack is a brilliant idea as well - as long as it doesn't affect transfer speeds.

I have that on my 2G shuffle. It does - It is slower. But it´s not that bad. I love the idea of having 4 times my actual space, but i can´t use my nice sony headphones... buu...

Ya, I just figured that out... I don't think people actually use voiceover on a daily basis so Apple is getting people to use it. Oh and I think that explained why when you sync with mac you get the male voiceover and with PC you get female. The voiceover is probably pre-generated in iTunes before it syncs into the shuffle... ya, for those who knew already, sorry I'm slow...
