The reason the picture looks bad to you is because it’s the exact same image you have on the iPads, from the 8.3” mini to the 12.9” Pro. Now take that picture and stretch it to 27”. It’s going to look worse, but for the other guy, it looks all the same. Just once, I’d like to see a reviewer actually test the webcam properly. When’s the last time you saw a review where they actually made a call and saw what the person on the other side saw? Every reviewer just brings up FaceTime and looks at themselves without making a call. It’s a useless test… unless you like taking pictures of yourself in a webcam. The 6K or 7K updated display, hopefully, to be announced with the mac pros this fall, had better have 4 freaking K cams for the price they are going to be.
No excuses. No fancy 1080p upscaling with onboard iPhone guts, 4K. As clear a picture as we have ever seen.
I'm mostly with you on all this, but the Studio Display webcam is rancid. If you have an old iPhone laying around, fire up Camo Studio's trial version and compare. My iPhone 6's rear camera produces an amazing image compared with the ASD's, and I really dislike the Center Stage feature and how it keeps sliding me to the middle of the frame. It looks unnatural and goofy on Zoom calls and has even prompted comments from people I'm in meetings with. You can turn Center Stage off, but that just shows the wide-angle view and you're way too small in the frame.I'm so glad to have a display that makes my design work shine, without the chonky webcam, wires, and clutter. THAT is what I really paid for.
I did the install a few minutes ago. Download took a couple of seconds; install took about 3-4 minutes. I ran music through the ASD speakers with no issues and to my HomePods via AirPlay with no issues. Of course, it's too early to say if the problem is fixed, but it definitely works so far for me. As a point of reference, I've had the ASD since its release date, use it every day and I've had the sound issue only twice. So, for me at least, it was never a big problem, just an annoyance. Hopefully this update fixed it.I agree… I’d like to know if the issue is truly fixed or not

Tried that and still no update. Oh well...There's an easy way to force a refresh to "see" the update. Go into System Preferences, Software Update, click "Advanced", click the hopefully checked "check for updates". It will prompt for a password. Cancel, hit "OK", and then it should refresh and show the update.
This has happened to me twice and I'm dreading updating.
Some issues can be fixed VIA software updates. 🤷♂️Can’t fix the webcam so…
Apple never tries to make “dumb” products though. You should consider taking a look at a Dell monitor instead.I am starting a club.
It's called the "we just want "dumb" apple displays, no camera, no iPhone guts".
$1199 = 27"
$899 = 24"
Who is in?
Yea but can you really consider apple’s current implementation as smart tho? Having an iPhone chip in this thing has given it no new features but instead a ton of software bugs while inflating the price and creating unnecessary heat production. This thing is anything but smartApple never tries to make “dumb” products though. You should consider taking a look at a Dell monitor instead.

What about HP?real 5K Dell? (not this 5K / 2K stuff) though. they just do the wide kind.

Not really. I like having the additional real estate, but after a while my eyes feel strained. I joke earlier on this thread that I'm an excel enthusiast. Fact is I spend a lot of time working on files that just read better on retina displays.Do you feel like the lower PPI of these Ultrawide monitors (I'm guessing they're around 109 PPI at 3440x1440) is tolerable for long hour usage?

Can’t argue this. Not to mention the included Magic accessories which now add another couple hundred dollars to the setup.I mean when Apple had a full computer 8 years ago with almost exactly the same screen for 150$ more I would say that’s some wack expectations on apples part too
Thanks for the help, but I should mention that I am also running Ventura and there is no "advanced" button available. There's an easy way to force a refresh to "see" the update. ProMotionBut then you never needed Apple to make a 4K display since there are probably 100+ models out there which offer 4K with a great variety of prices and technical specification.
What could Apple have done which no other screen manufacture haven't done?
I’d had the monitor for probably 2 months with no problems prior to it happening. Then, at some point I found that any app playing audio through the monitor speakers would play for a few seconds, crackle, then cut out. Other speakers worked fine. After several Mac reboots and swapping TB cables, I thought, why not “reboot” the monitor, which solved the problem. How many people here had the problem with the speakers? I didn’t hear any issues with mine, so I don’t know exactly what people are hearing or not hearing. But then again, I spend a bunch of time on a headset. Is it crackling? Cut-outs? Stoppage? Or just poor quality sound?
Unfortunately, I’m running Ventura beta on the computer and don’t see the update, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the trouble of linking it up with one of my laptops with Monterey and updating it that way.
At the time of release, exactly 2 Macs ever sold included Thunderbolt 4 ports. Mac Studio was the third.Mate, what are you talking about?
Thunderbolt 4 DOES support DisplayPort 1.4.
"It incorporates the DisplayPort 1.4 standard".
in fact it has support for DisplayPort 2.0
Thunderbolt 4 Explained | Eaton
Thunderbolt 4, the latest connectivity standard from Intel, gives you fast data transfer, high-resolution video and charging, all at the same time. If you're thinking about buying a Thunderbolt 4 laptop, read this first!www.tripplite.com
"Thunderbolt 4 includes support for DisplayPort 2.0, allowing it to power up to three 10K monitors at the same time, or one 16K monitor at 60Hz"

Same here. I had been clutching onto an old Thunderbolt Display waiting for a new display from Apple. I love my Studio Display. I’m glad I got the height adjustable stand and enjoy sitting down at my desk everyday. So much blind hate for this product. I’ve had mine since day 1 and it’s been exactly what I’ve wanted for years.
It looks amazing, I’ve had no audio issues (though glad there’s new firmware), and the webcam now looks as good as any other built in webcam Apple ships in Macs, only with Center Stage (usefulness of that feature is debatable).
The only other 5K display on the market is ugly to look at, is 6 years old, and still costs $1,299. 4K is not the same as 5K. Hi-PPI/Retina is glorious. $1,599 is expensive but any $1,000+ display is a luxury item and I’m happy to have it.

I had the same issue to get the firmware update. I am on Ventura as well. Not sure if this is an issue on Ventura for the studio display updateThanks for the help, but I should mention that I am also running Ventura and there is no "advanced" button available.
The discussion was about whether it was even possible, and as my post proved - yes, it was very possible to have 120hz/5k.At the time of release, exactly 2 Macs ever sold included Thunderbolt 4 ports. Mac Studio was the third.
Apple made this display for Macs going back years, so they weren’t going to add a feature that only 2 Macs on the market for 6 months could take advantage of and further add to the cost.
