Could you describe the process that "fixed" your problem updating? My Mac Studio+Studio Display has for over 30 minutes been sitting on the screen saying it's updating. The text says: "The screen may turn off for a few minutes during this firmware update. Do not disconnect or power off your Apple Studio Display". Of course I'm reluctant to disturb it but it's clearly not going to finish.

What did you do?
My problem is now resolved. Whew. Details below:

After an hour of staring at the screen saying it is updating, don't disconnect, I called AppleCare. The person I spoke with was nice but also didn't know anything. Eventually he said shut down the Mac which I did and then restarted it. Everything came up as normal. We checked the firmware version on the display in a system profile and it had the updated software version. So the update apparently worked as expected EXCEPT at the end it didn't show a finished result and shared the sh*t out of me. But it's working as expected now.

You sound pretty defensive..
but I’m glad you are enjoying it, as it is a great product.

However even the Apple fanatic reviewers say it missed the mark - at its retail price point anyway
I don’t trust reviewers. The same ones who were claiming the M2 MacBook Air was terrible a week ago are not claiming it’s beating the Mac Pro in a lot of features the Mac Pro was specifically designed for.

There's not really a market for 5K resolutions due to component cost and the niche use case. For most 4K is enough, which is why only Apple and LG make 5K displays.

And those who insist on 5K always push the "but macOS scaling" meme everytime to justify why they can't just get a 32 inch 4K monitor for much cheaper. Literally everytime.

But then you never needed Apple to make a 4K display since there are probably 100+ models out there which offer 4K with a great variety of prices and technical specification.

What could Apple have done which no other screen manufacture haven't done?

To be fair, a big part of the reason why users are negative towards this product is because, rightly, they expect it to just work like any other display.

So why don't just buy a screen from these manufacturers?

Why do they need Apple to behave like everyone else?

It's just a different version of the people who wants Apple to behave like Microsoft, Google or Samsung.

The 6K or 7K updated display, hopefully, to be announced with the mac pros this fall, had better have 4 freaking K cams for the price they are going to be.

No excuses. No fancy 1080p upscaling with onboard iPhone guts, 4K. As clear a picture as we have ever seen.

I am starting a club.

It's called the "we just want "dumb" apple displays, no camera, no iPhone guts".

$1199 = 27"
$899 = 24"

Who is in?
Given the current options, I'm in.

I bought the old Thunderbolt display for $999 with all the options at the time though. It was expensive, but did what it advertised.

This new Studio display, which I also bought, looks great, but it stops there. I wanted a 5k display to replace my iMac but with a modern mac behind it (M1 16" MBP). So, having the speakers and webcam is preferable to me, but not given the quality. The webcam is a lost cause. It just looks terrible without really good lighting, much worse than just the Macbook Pro by itself.

The speakers are also a problem. The first time I ran into the stuttering issue I thought it was the computer and I was in the middle of a Teams call. It's happened 3 times since I've had it and unplugging the monitor was the only option since, you know, there is no need for a power switch anymore. Hopefully this update fixes it unlike the update to fix the webcam. Putting all that effort into having it run an A13 bionic and iOS has had seemingly no upside.

I would prefer either a slightly larger 30 - 32" 5k display with either no options or if they are going to put them in, make them really fantastic, the best webcam on the market. They do have some experience there. I know soon I can just stick my iPhone over the top of the lousy camera in my Studio Display with a plastic clip. That'll look awesome on that $1600 monitor.

You’re right I’m not a photographer. But I know someone who is

This is Murwin. On the PCMR Discord he’s a regular on our Mac channel. He does freelance photography and provides the server insight on Mac usage for creative professionals. Here’s his take on the Studio Display:

You're quoting someone who doesn't own the display.

Also you can see the difference on text between a 4K display and 5K display connected to a Mac probably due to macOS bad handling of 4K resolutions.

I also tend to lean into the display having a distance of about 10" to 15".

Indeed.

And webcam worse than the one I have and iPhone guts I do not need.

My point was I wished apple would ship one without all that. Just a basic one.

Well... I guess it boils down to how bad do you need a superb display? I certainly don't need the webcam. And I could make do without the speakers, though now that I've heard them, they're a plus.

All in all, for my needs, as someone who uses Lightroom everyday, the display was an outstanding value at that price point. I didn't want to pay $6K+ for the XDR - way out of my price range, even for a better display.

If I was just using it to surf the web, do spreadsheets, write code, etc., it wouldn't have made as much sense. And better value could probably be found.

Heck, why not TWO 4K cameras in the new 6K display, and apple could use some software derivative that could switch cams during your video calls just like a Hollywood production!

LOL.

Me: Siri, get my good side, please.

Siri: Of course! switching to cam 2

What is..is. AND WHAT I THINK ABOUT IT DOES NOT CHANGE IT.

If you do like the specifications and what you see showing on an actual Display you have two choices: Take it or leave it.

Really that simple.

If you do not like the specifications, walk away and do not waste other folks' time with baseless rants based upon no actual experience with the device in question.

Just saying.....

Okay, then I guess the only thing left to do is to go to the Apple store and try it for yourself.
I have done as such, and found the reviews to be accurate - for my case at least.

Yeah, adding ProMotion would be nice. But I have no idea whether it's an expensive or inexpensive addition, and thus whether it would be reasonable to see it at those prices.

Even if they didn't have ProMotion, I wouldn't say Apple's monitors are outclassed by gaming monitors at the same size and price, because those gaming monitors all have a much lower pixel density. Only if the gaming monitors were also Retina displays would they be outclassed.
I mean the iPad Pro and iPhone 13 Pro have it so I’m pretty sure it’s bot as expensive as you think it is

Incorrect.
5k/120hz on thunderbolt 1.4 is possible with DSC.
Not correct. First you meant to say DisplayPort 1.4. Thunderbolt 3/4 does not support DisplayPort 1.4, nor does it support HDMI 2.1, either of which could do 5K/120 with DSC. But since Thunderbolt 4 doesn’t support either of them, DSC isn’t going to do squat. TB supports DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0.

The only way to get 5K/120 out of Thunderbolt is to do what Dell did with their 8K monitor. They required two Thunderbolt connections and combined the signals. Apple’s not going to do that, and if they did, people would scream that Apple was sucking up two of their precious Thunderbolt ports.

You’re going to have to wait for Thunderbolt 5 before you can get 5K/120.

Is it ok with you if we talk about it?

We are on a "discussion forum" after all

Topic participation doesn't require specific ownership

So? The LG is only $300 cheaper and it wobbles and has cheap plastic. Even if the Studio Display didn’t have those features, it’d still be about the same cost.

Yah, that's the problem.

I'm waiting till fall / winter before I decide though, I might just go 6 or 7K if they ship an updated display along with the new mac pros.

Mate, what are you talking about?

Thunderbolt 4 DOES support DisplayPort 1.4.

"It incorporates the DisplayPort 1.4 standard".

in fact it has support for DisplayPort 2.0

"Thunderbolt 4 includes support for DisplayPort 2.0, allowing it to power up to three 10K monitors at the same time, or one 16K monitor at 60Hz"

👍

im not seeing the update.

Same here. Not sure what to do next at this point.

No updates showing here.

There's an easy way to force a refresh to "see" the update. Go into System Preferences, Software Update, click "Advanced", click the hopefully checked "check for updates". It will prompt for a password. Cancel, hit "OK", and then it should refresh and show the update.

This is great, the updates failed and bricked my monitor! Hoping the restore process works…

This has happened to me twice and I'm dreading updating.

Here's an idea. How about keeping this thread on point. People can discuss the firmware update, any issues they might have had with its installation, and whether or not it solved the problem. Someone can start a new thread debating the merits of the ASD, why you love it/hate it, etc. It's too time consuming to wade through all the non-related BS.
