I can imagine Apple doing away entirely with mechanical keys and having a touch panel backlit with perforations across it... the back light forms the keys... thus we type and swipe...

Yep, I think that is definitely where this product concept is headed. The magic mouse was step one, the magic pad is step two. Apple is slowly leading us with a trail of bread crumbs.

Exactly what I said on page 5. Can't wait for the wireless Magic Trackpad/Keyboard.

Definitely picking this and the charger up today if its at my local store. My mouse will pretty much only be for gaming from now on.
Way to go apple, more chit for me to drop money on.:apple::p

Why wireless (apart from the obvious)...

Could they not have made it USB and made it so it plugs directly into the side of the (aluminium) keyboard - nice and flush - so it wouldn't need batteries? If that's not eco-friendly, I don't know what is... And before you say 'I haven't got an aluminium keyboard...'

Wondering if this touchpad also will pair with an iPad or iPod Touch, like the BT Alu keyboards do.
Probably not. There is no concept of a hovering cursor for the iDevices. You press and iOS registers a "mouse click" or you press and drag. This is probably why Bluetooth mice don't work with the iDevices.

To everybody that will buy the magic trackpad, what do you hope to gain out of it? What will you use it for? What new ways of doing things may come about from this new product?

When editing photos I have my MacBook hooked up to an external monitor and use the magic mouse. I also use the track pad with my left hand to scroll around the image and the mouse in my right hand to do the editing. Its hard to explain it but its a real smooth setup. (for me anyways)
I could see this Magic Trackpad working in the same manner.

If you jailbreak your iPad you can use the magic mouse with it. The magic trackpad should/will work too.

I hate the new Magic Mouse because it wants to be the trackpad from my MBA but it's so sticky to my fingers that it moves around when you want to swipe or drag. I welcome the new Trackpad. Too bad you have to get both with a new iMac right now. :(

BTstack. Of course mice work with iDevices.

I've got to say.. between using FCP on a desktop or a laptop - my MacBook's multi-touch trackpad is hugely more practical for editing than a mouse, in my opinion. For a while now I've wanted to get an external monitor, put my laptop on a stand parallel to the other monitor, and go the route of an external keyboard and TRACKPAD... and I'm so glad I can finally do that!

In addition, it's already been said here, but for the HTPC capabilities the thing is immensely practical as well. Mac mini + eyeTV + myTuneSync + Wireless Keyboard + Magic Trackpad = perfect, painless HTPC setup.

This is the reason I'll be getting one of these. Have a Mac mini hooked up to the TV and using a mouse on the coffee table isn't the most elegant solution for controlling the pointer. Tnis fits the bill perfectly for me... Aside from the cost that is. :-s

If I had money to burn, I would get this for watching movies on my HDTV through my Macbook, but for now I'll just stick with the Apple Remote and XBMC.

I've been searching for months for a wireless keyboard with a built-in trackpad for my HTPC Mac Mini. I've been using a crappy Brando model (that was still pretty expensive). This looks awesome, but it needs to be integrated into the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard for it to be really useful to me.

Every word in this post relates to me. I have been preaching the exact same situation for over 3 years now! I may integrate the two into a nice slice of routed-out wood.

It won't aggravate my carpal tunnel the way a mouse does, and won't require a big surface to rest on. Sold.

Who would have believed...

Who'd have believed Apple would be in the AA rechargeable battery business in 2010?
I wonder if these are merely Apple branded low self-discharge NiMH batteries joined with a charger that has shutoff circuitry built-in.

Although I also wouldn't buy it for desktop use, I believe this is definitely the best device to have in a coffee table. It easily beats any other device out there in terms of design and (I hope) functionality.

Also,as Apple will develop products for the living room environment, I expect this trackpad to be the ultimate controlling device alone, or in a hybrid keyboard-trackpad...

So, no great desktop accessory for me, but a definite buy when I replace my aging Apple TV with What Comes Next... ;)
