Have you spent any time at all with the similar trackpads on the laptops? There are definitely reasons to use a mouse with certain apps, but for general use, the current trackpads are head and shoulders better than a mouse. I've yet to encounter a single person that doesn't find a mouse arcane after using the trackpad for a while.

Here's one. I much prefer using a magic mouse to my MBP trackpad.

To everybody that will buy the magic trackpad, what do you hope to gain out of it? What will you use it for? What new ways of doing things may come about from this new product?

Well if you use the Mac mini for home theater purposes....this trackpad is most excellent.

I'm no expert, but it seems like sticking something on the underside of the desk would be akin to hovering the mouse above the surface of a normal table, depending how thick the desk is. I can't see this working well.

I haven't tested this, i was just thinking its glass. The laser would shine right through the glass, thats why he was needing the pad. I just hate having a pad, its always moving on me.

But maybe you are right? It was just an idea I had.

Absolutely love it. First tech thing I've actually made a special trip to the shops to get since OSX 10.2 was released. Unfortunately none at Regent St. today. They haven't yet been briefed on it.

Nice, I love the trackpad I already have on my MacBook so I don't think I would be getting one. However, if I had a desktop Mac it would be nice to have both a mouse and this; for the times when a trackpad just doesn't cut it.

I hate laptop track pads, I don't know why people would want these for their macs

It amazes me how so many people are entirely averted to change or adapting to new technology that is clearly superior in many aspects. I sell MBPs all day and one of the things that impresses new Mac users the most is the implementation of the multi touch gestures with the trackpad and Snow Leopard. I personally find the technology to be vastly more efficient and user friendly once you have the muscle memory for the commands. I will surely be adding this to my MBP + HDTV + Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard combo and can't wait to see how much my couch productivity increases!

It looks nice. But I really thought that Apple would release an input device with a small LCD screen. I imagine that's a few years away.

They have a long while ago. See the iPhone + AirMouse pro. My favorite App of all! Can't beat the added functionality for the $2 I paid if memory serves. Of course it cost a little more than $69 but hey, you also get a phone that shoots HD video and can play Street Fighter 4! ;)

If you can't see it being useful then you've never used the glass trackpad and all the multitouch gestures on the Unibody Macbooks.

i use these gestures daily, but i still think this is stupid.

it would be cool if you could do more with it, instead of it just being a trackpad...

My experience with gestures on the Windows platform is that they suck. On the iPod Touch I have, they work well. However, I hate the trackpad with a burning passion, and I don't see why you would want this. Having the gestures without direct manipulation seems silly to me, and the Wacom Bamboo was a multitouch trackpad on the Mac so this isn't a first like Apple is claiming.

Jury is still out though, but I'm a skeptic. I'd be open to trying one hands on but I'm a doubter.

I've never been so excited about a battery charger. Seriously, the ones I have are huge and ugly.

My philosophy with input devices is to use them all. It reduces the strain of hours of using your hand in one particular way. So the Magic Trackpad will join my mouse and Wacom tablet as another option to rotate through periodically.

Because many people really like using trackpads, especially those that are on the MacBooks?

I'm buying one. I definitely prefer it to a mouse.

I was about to say the same (but a bit more constructively :)

As a desktop user, am I expected to forgo my mouse to use this trackpad. Or in addition to keyboard/mouse to do what? I'm just not sure what functionality this adds, and for whom.

Better make that two. Unless I'm using the MPB in my lap, I nearly always connect a mouse. Call me old school, but it just feels quicker and more precise.

Allows handwriting?

I wonder if it allows handwriting for Asian type languages like on the iPhone/Pad/Touch. In which case, that would be awesome.

Not sure on this one, probably ok for use with a media center (apple tv)

This is a common thing I see.. I wonder how many Mac users don't realize that they can plug their MacBooks or MBPs into their HDTVs for an amazing experience (especially in clamshell/ lid closed mode). You certainly don't need an Apple TV or Mac Mini to take advantage of the 1080p display option on an existing HDTV (provided you shell out the $10-$20 for a third party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter). It's probably my favorite use of my MBP and of my 40" Samsung. May not have the color accuracy or the 30" Cinema Display but it sure has a great picture and huge amounts of desktop real estate. Ableton Live, Logic and FCP are incredibly easy to create projects on with 40" of HD screen.

*Update* Well it looks like the 30" Cinema Display is finally done for.. I for one will not miss its' $1800 price tag.. The new 27" LED has the same horizontal resolution with 200 less lines vertically so at $899 it seems like a better value IMO.

Well for me, I've gotten very spoiled with my MBP glass trackpad and all the gestures. My 27" iMac has the Magic mouse and it's quite limited and it's a pain to go from using the MBP to the iMac and realize that I can't do all the gestures on the Magic mouse as I can the MBP's glass trackpad. It will be a seamless experience now so I am definitely buying one.
