I wonder if it magically devours batteries like the Magic Mouse?

My BT Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse get about 3 - 6 months of use before I have to replace the batteries. I'm okay with that.

I'm hoping that Apple's introduction of a battery recharger is just another nod to their concern for the environment. My first thought was that the Magic Trackpad consumes so much battery life that rechargeables are the only way to go.

Trackpad definitely great for home theatre. My mouse doesn't seem to like the coffeetable glass, my pant leg, the sofa, the carpet, etc as a mousepad...very erratic performance. The trackpad will be great for this. But not sure I need it as Rowmote Pro from the app store already gives me this functionality on my iPod/iPad/iPhone, plus the keyboard too.

To everybody that will buy the magic trackpad, what do you hope to gain out of it? What will you use it for? What new ways of doing things may come about from this new product?

You use with a mac-mini hooked up to your TV as your "main" computer.

Ie, for this setup:

iPad - main device for browsing, home use, etc.

AND

Mac-mini + wireless keyboard + mage trackpad + TV display. Use that when you MUST have a regular app or to surf on the big screen from your couch. And to sync your iPad/iPod, keep your main music/picture collection.

I'm pretty excited about this... I never got used to the "feeling" of the Magic Mouse that came with my iMac, despite alterations with BetterTouchTool. The Magic Mouse was a substitute for allowing me to use the best parts of a trackpad (smooth scrolling, gestures, etc.) along with the classic design of a mouse, but it really just didn't work out for me. I'm not sure about you, but I find it incredibly awkward to perform even simple gestures on the Magic Mouse, like two finger swipes left and right. It just doesn't feel natural to me, and because the surface is so friggin' glossy, my fingers always stick to it. I love the matte/smooth feeling of the glass trackpad, and unlike other mice that I've tried in an attempt to replace the Magic Mouse, since it's from Apple, I'm sure the drivers will be smooth and up to the task. I am likely going to buy this as soon as some reviews show up on the major blogs and youtube. Engadget already posted their first impressions/hands on kind of thing. I just usually like to see things in action before I pull the trigger.

why don't they offer a keyboard with a trackpad built-in, OR make them connect in some way?
I'm thinking of lap use with a Mac Mini as media center.

My thoughts exactly. I'd love to see a full size wireless keyboard with built-in trackpad, mainly for use with our Mac mini media centre.

If the trackpad was on the far right of the keyboard and doubled as the numerical keypad (perhaps with a 'lock' key that activated a backlit display as was suggested by someone else) that would make it an incredibly versatile keyboard for general use.

This is the start of OS XI

IMO Apple will not make a multi-touch iMac/MBP as a lot of people have being waiting for. I believe the new major OS release will have multi-touch features which will be accessible by using this trackpad.

Think about it, every notebook has a trackpad. Every desktop has a trackpad. Now they can build things with that in mind.

I'm not entirely sure on this, added to my order today just to see how it works, £60 its worth a punt, anyway, I got £60 off my order so its free :D

You saw it here first folks...the MagicTray wireless keyboard/MagicPad caddy.

Not a bad idea. But by the time you fork out for an Apple wireless keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and the MagicTray… I'm thinking you could almost have bought an iPad and used that instead. (I'm assuming you can use an iPad as an input device for a Mac media centre?)

Nothing new, really. But I have a space just about the same size as this where I put my HT's mouse, and a standard mouse is a pain. Wireless is mandatory. This will fit perfectly and give me exactly what I want, a non-moving 'mouse' solution. I was going to get a trackball as I like those, too, but Kensington discontinued the wireless version years ago. This is PERFECT. (assuming the size works, it appears to)

So glad I didn't drop $70 on the Magic Mouse.

seems really great.

does it work with my iPad?

Does it work with windows XP or 7?

It would be cool to have this with me while traveling or at the office where I have to use a PC.

Can't see it being much useful, but will give it a try at the Apple Store.

Not much useful?
I bet if Asus or MSI brought this out you'd say Apple was getting owned in the innovation department.
I'll be ordering mine on Friday.
Thank you very much!!!!!

now to see if someone can cook up some windows drivers for this (my laptop is a Mac, but my desktop is a PC...nothing quite like building your own. Wish it was easier to do that with a Mac)

Agreed! My laptop is a MBP but my music studio desktop is a PC - for a number of reasons - and a big tabletop trackpad would help immensely! I'd definitely buy one in an instant if Apple/someone else made windows drivers for it.

Windows 7 x64 please :)

They released PC drivers for the Magic Mouse so hopefully they do it for these too.

I'd say the same thing, and I said the same thing when the Wacom Bamboo came out as a multitouch trackpad that was Mac compatible.*

*I thought the pen was useful on that, but not personally, as I have terrible graphomotor skills. Not enough to stop me from using gestures on a trackpad, but enough where pen input for a PC is virtually useless for me :p

Was going to the Apple store this week to have some iPhone issues addressed. Looking forward to trying out the track pad while I'm there. Needs to be W7 as well as OSX compliant to be useful to me.

Would love it if I could get rid of the mouse, but on the surface I'm not convinced that this will be versatile and convenient enough to become an effective replacement. Guess I'll find out...

Great idea!,

Too bad you posted this in an open forum so someone can see it and rip off your design!

They will just wait and see.

They will make some minor adjustments so you can't do anything about it.

Oh well.

Because Italians are scared of us lefties and our amazing abilities in every single one of the many many fields we excel at?

Ambidextrous comes from dexter (right), so being ambidextrous is basically being "right handed on both sides". Other languages translate right positively and left poorly.

You have two left feet when you're clumsy, not two right feet ;)

The only thing I'm lefty with is that I hold a knife in my left hand when eating, even though I'm right handed... I'm evil at the dinner table :D
