Not a bad idea. But by the time you fork out for an Apple wireless keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and the MagicTray… I'm thinking you could almost have bought an iPad and used that instead. (I'm assuming you can use an iPad as an input device for a Mac media centre?)

Is this true? If that's true, it would give me a reason to buy an iPad. Nothing would be better than a trackpad with a display behind it.

Trackpad definitely great for home theatre. My mouse doesn't seem to like the coffeetable glass, my pant leg, the sofa, the carpet, etc as a mousepad...very erratic performance. The trackpad will be great for this. But not sure I need it as Rowmote Pro from the app store already gives me this functionality on my iPod/iPad/iPhone, plus the keyboard too.

+1!! My thoughts exactly except instead of Rowmote Pro I use Air Mouse Pro which I swear by too. Fits my needs perfectly.

i use these gestures daily, but i still think this is stupid.

it would be cool if you could do more with it, instead of it just being a trackpad...

LOL, gotta love MR. No matter what type of product Apple releases it would never offer enough to satisfy this forum. I suppose if the Magic Trackpad would allow you to turn it into anything you wanted it to do via apps from the App store it still wouldn't be enough. :p

I wonder if it magically devours batteries like the Magic Mouse?

( The magic mouse has the worst battery life I've ever known. Still, its a great mouse )

No problem for me, I'm swimming in NiMH batteries and the best charger money can buy. (it cost more than the trackpad)

I'll consider buying one when it does my laundry, washes my car, and pays my bills.

Seriously, I see that there are some applications, but I'm not swayed yet.

I know a very loyal Mac user who is bound to buy one, so I'll have a chance to try it, I'm sure.

My BT Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse get about 3 - 6 months of use before I have to replace the batteries. I'm okay with that.

Wow - 3 months with Magic Mouse? You are very fortunate - if you use your mouse regularly - many people can't get much more than 1 month. ( Google - 'magic mouse battery life' )

Off-hand?

I can see this being a great control device for a home theater setup! Say you configured a Mac Mini to serve up your movie/photo/music collection from an attached TV set? Now you have a mouse-like device to control the whole thing from that people can pick up and use in their hand (unlike a mouse), and won't look so out of place on a family room coffee table in front of the couch.

To everybody that will buy the magic trackpad, what do you hope to gain out of it? What will you use it for? What new ways of doing things may come about from this new product?

Would have preferred a internal battery w/ usb charger. That certainly would have been cleaner. y.

I've wanted this for so long, and it seems so obvious. I wish I could just plug in a USB cable to use & recharge my mouse / keyboard when it the power gets low, but I suppose that brings into question if I really need wireless input, because It's a compromise I'd be willing to make.

You can do exactly that with a logitech MX performance mouse. Wireless for the most part, but recharges via usb when it needs to (and you can keep using it while it's charging).

They missed a cross-marketing opportunity. The batteries shown in the optional battery charger don't have the "Buy-N-Large" logo on them. :(

Does anyone know if this works with the iPhone / iPad simulator?

Right now it's a little frustrating writing code that has a lot of multitouch gestures. Trying to test your multitouch app with a mouse on your Mac just doesn't cut it.

I hate laptop track pads, I don't know why people would want these for their macs

Have you used a recent MacBook (Pro) that has one of these? I don't know how you could hate them if you had. The one time I have ever plugged a mouse into my MBP is when I tried out Team Fortress 2, and only because I was used to playing it with a mouse on my PC.

Does anybody know if you can buy these in the store today?
You might be able to in the USA. The UK Apple Stores don't yet have them in stock, but then we were already halfway through the retail day when they were announced.

Does the entire thing click, or is it like the MacBook Pro trackpads that have a hinge at the top, making it impossible to click on the top half of the trackpad?

I mean I know Apple loves to say "the entire trackpad is the button", and they have said that for the MacBook Pro, and hell was I surprised that I can still only click at the bottom. If you could click everywhere, you could do a click-drag-drop with just one finger, without having to resort to double-tap-dragging which delays your single and double click registration by a few milliseconds (it annoys me a LOT, yes). Dragging with your index finger and having to press down at the bottom with your thumb makes it really uncomfortable to drag.

And I hope the clicking isn't so loud that it wakes my neighbours up at night! I mean clicking with my Unibody MacBook Pro trackpad is so damn loud I'm actually embarrassed to use it! And before you ask, I'm not putting toilet paper between the trackpad and the battery.

REally: why didn't they put the dimensions anywhere? is that a sort of military secret?
Based on the photos and it being the same depth as the aluminum keyboards (4 1/2"), it's about 4 13/16" wide, and the trackpad area is about 3 3/16" deep.

When will it be standard

At what point will Apple start shipping it's new Macs with a track pad instead of a mouse?

So in your experience the trackpad, at least on the MBP, is a viable substitute in gaming situations? If true, that's one possibly one significant hurdle overcome for me for the magic trackpad.

Not likely for a long time, if ever. They'll give you the option for one or the other (or both). But people are still attached to the mouse.

More likely is when will Macs be fully touch-screen? No mouse and no trackpad?

Batts are Vampires

Batteries? What the frack?

As an option – nice, but exclusively? That’s the only reason I never bothered buying a Magic Mouse, still dealing with the dirt-attracting scroll ball of the Mighty Mouse.

At least they’re standard and exchangable, unlike the ones in iDevices.

Edit: This board is broken, it doesn’t let me write the letters ‘f’, ‘u’, ‘c’ and ‘k’ in sequence when they make the only appropriate word!
