the definition of a BR is made to be watched on a nice TV screen in your living room with an amplifier and good speakers

not on a computer screen
Ah, okay... I think I get it now. So it's okay to watch Blu-ray on a 27" HDTV, but it's not okay to watch it on a 27" computer (which, incidentally, has a higher resolution panel).

I'm so glad I now know "the definition of a BR!"

You misunderstood me, in other words, I just wanted to know, if it'd be possible to open the iMac, building a ssd into it or upgrading the memory.

doubt it...the SSD drive controllers are not SATA or IDE...and unfortunately, as far as I know, the industry has still not standardized on a SSD controller.

I think it will be 2+ years before SSD technology really becomes mainstream due to numerous factors.

Is there anybody notice adding the RAM to 8 GB DDR3 only cost $200 more? Does it use the same RAM modules that they use it in the MACBook pro?

It is four 2GB modules. The Macbook Pro would need two 4GB modules, and the 4GB cost a lot more than two 2GBs. You'll find that Apple also offers two 4GBs or four 4GBs for a lot more.

I have to say, well done Apple, well done. Really looks great.

Intel Quad-Core Nehalem i7 is available as an option. 1 TB HD comes standard, with 2 TB option. Magic Mouse is sheer brilliance, and 2560 x 1440 resolution is phenomenal - November can't get here soon enough!

Laptop on a stick? I do not think so.
+1
Can it run Leopard?

I still would like to see DESKTOP processors in the imac. not fairly high end mobile ones.

Blu ray would be real nice, but its not a must for me. If it was something like only offered for the 27 inch then it would push me over the fence to get the 27 inch instead of getting the higher end 21"

These are NOT over clocked mobile i7's. In the demonstration video, one of them mentions that it is "work station class" processors in the i7 iMac. I doubt workstation class processors are in any mobile computers.

Or you could just buy a $150 22" LCD from Newegg.com, which still brings the whole setup under 1K.
True. And I purposely neglected mentioning that...because Mom and Dad or Joe Consumer who walk into an Apple store and buy all the pretty, sexy, slick machines are not going to 1)want to go shopping for a non-Apple monitor 2)not have the brains to figure it out and 3)whatever they buy won't "match" the coolness factor of Apple.

A "server" is anything that provides a service to multiple clients. This Mini does that. It's not a highend or even low end traditional server, but then again it's not priced like one either.
True again...but let's not confuse pure definition with reality. :) Every computer on this earth is used differently by each human. That includes servers. 95% (or higher) of IT departments would never buy a "server class" machine in the form of a Mini due to it's huge hardware limitations. Again, to each his own. Niches always exist.

And computers used to cost $3500-$4000 starting and you can't even justify $1200.

What? I paid over $7000 for my first Mac II - the 14" CRT was well over $1k as I recall.

I still have it in the basement now that I think about it... too bad it won't power up any more :)

Guess what? My 4-month old 20" iMac is officially rendered obsolete. :(

One thing I learned long ago about buying computers, take the plunge, and then put on blinders for 6 months. Computer Technology moves so fast that if you worry about your equipment being obsolete, it will drive you nuts.

These beasties look rather good to me with SNL on them. I guess I am going to have to buy one of the Quad babies for the wife and maybe one for me and a the server mini for my business.

What good is a 1080p display without 1080p content?

A lot of the movies I see are a lot wider than the 1080P standard, so I end up with black bars at top and bottom.

Maybe Apple or others will be selling 1080P content soon.

Besides a good 50 inch HDTV at 1080P probably beats the 27inch experience.

Well, still not a gaming rig. I know his majesty doesn't care about the gaming industry, but he is missing out on a huge market. All theses iMacs are missing is the ability to upgrade the gpu, and then perhaps people might really start looking at the iMac seriously.

OS X is the reason to own a Mac. Not the hardware. The Hardware is mediocre compared to the PC market.

Don't you see? His Royal Highness is positioning the Apple brand to target the same people Nintendo is with the Wii. He isn't going after hardcore gamers, he's going after casual gamers with low quality shovelware. Just like the crap available at the App store.

Bluray? Heck no, he doesn't want to compete with everyone else. He has low quality high price movie rentals on iTunes. Why would he want to hurt his own sales? He takes choice away and the Sheeple will buy it at twice the price.

Wha???????

Yea, a pc I bought in 1994 cost me $2500 because I CHOSE to spend that much AND desktop PCs cost easily more than $1000 those days (15+ years ago). Average price for a pc back then was probably $1800 including a monitor...these days (the past 2-3 years at least) a pc will set me back $700-800 including a monitor. Of course we can't compare bits for bits but the same general purpose usability cases.

Not sure where you've been...but personal computers (at least in the PC world) have been priced sub $1000 for over 10 years.

Why can't I justify $1200 on an iMac? Because the useage of the machine (for me) would be low and would be a 2nd or 3rd machine. I use both Macs and PCs.

$1200, to me (and a lot of other people), is a lot of money (in comparison to other computers out there) to spend on a 2nd machine or if I were a PC user thinking of trying out my first Mac.

It's all relative.

the monitor input

Im curious to see how well the monitor input will work on the new 27" models. What adapters will be avalible? I looked on the apple website, but I did not see any adapters avalible.

And computers used to cost $3500-$4000 starting and you can't even justify $1200.
You are going to love this. My first PC was a Compaq Deskpro circa 1984, cost retail $7,000.00 at Sears business systems. Second PC was a Dell Pentium Pro 200, cost $5,400.00, third PC, Dell 4550 with all the options, cost $3,200.00, fourth, MacBook Pro 17, 2.33, cost $2,700.00. New iMac 27", i7 processor, upgrade to 8 Gigs of RAM, Apple remote, iLife 09 and Applecare, cost $2,438.00 (EPP). That makes it the cheapest Computer I've ever bought. Oh, I'm not counting the Gateway laptop that died right after the warranty ran out.

Really? 2560x1440?

That is un-heard of. This can only come from Apple. The iMac is most definitely the most gorgeous computer Apple makes, and this only makes it better. Awesome job, Apple!

this BR is really really annoying

damn it guys

the definition of a BR is made to be watched on a nice TV screen in your living room with an amplifier and good speakers

not on a computer screen

why don't you just buy a good BR drive and put it next to your TV ????

i'd rather watch a nice BR on a nice 40"/42" screen or bigger rather than on a 21 or even 27" each with some lame speakers...

People that just "don't get it" about Blu-ray on the iMac are more annoying.

What is it you don't get about wanting the best source possible for playback on an incredibly high resolution 27" computer screen you sit a couple of feet away from?

What is it you don't get about wanting some capability for archiving your BD collection or making a copy to DVD/iPhone/media-server, etc? Should we all run out and buy a 2nd copy on DVD so we can use our Macs with movies? Or should we pay too much and buy low quality ultra compressed 720P versions on iTunes for $20?

What is it you don't get about wanting the best possible authoring format for HD video content? There are plenty of cheap HD camcorders on the market, and you can do a wonderful job of editing this video on the iMac. Want to burn it onto an affordable media that will allow friends/relatives/business-associates to view it on one of the multi-million BD players out there? Tough luck.

So to summarize;

People that just "don't get it" about Blu-ray on the iMac are more annoying.

Lovely updates - Blu-ray Schmoo-ray. But...

...just look at that UK pricing :(

Even when VAT is factored in, and at todays exchange rate, there's an 11.3% loading.

I guess I'll just have to suck it up, 'cos I want one.

21.5 iMac $ 110 less expensive than the 20 they previously offered here in Japan thanks to strong yen . I'm going to get one - my first Mac .

I´m just surprised Apple hold an event for a a Nano with a camera, but nothing for these major updates and new products.

I'd disagree with that, but it's nearly impossible to find which one of us is closer to the correct statistic, so we'll have to agree to disagree. :)

Totally agree with you; however, "servers" like this haven't really existed until now (as far as I know).

I think Apple is trying a new market here, and frankly after having worked as a network engineer/consultant in Chicago's Loop, I think it has the potential to do well. Reason being is that there are a lot of very small real estate and legal firms that want servers, but don't want Windows 2003/2008, and don't want the big expense, and would like something that after being set up they could add and remove users, admin the wiki, etc.

It may or may not succeed, but it certainly has potential.

It would have been nice to include a tv tuner, maybe something they can add. I'm sure BR will eventually make it's way onto mac. It's growing market, for sure.

AGREED!

I would love for one of you Apple fanbois to explain to me why you continually defend Apple for snubbing BR. What good does it do to put such a high tech LCD screen in the iMac (27" better than 1080p, according to the video) and NOT support high definition DVD's?? This makes absolutely no sense and can only be explained by blind Apple love!

can someone please give me more info about the performance of the new video card

ati radeon HD 4670

vs the old one (nvidia GT 120/GT 130)

will the ati do better for graphical perf / decoding HD videos?

thx

Does anybody have the actual dimensions of the 27” iMac? I can see the screen size on the Apple site (65x51.8) but not the full height with stand? Strange that the 21.5” has the full measurement.

Many thanks for any info.
