Headlines, yes. Positive headlines which would attract buyers, no.

And one reason they even got headlines is because Apple has no new product releases this quarter. If Apple had released any new stuff these month, it would probably sucked all the air out of the news coverage for other tech gadgets.

LG has the worst software in history. Pure crap.

Reviews about G2 seem to be OK with its software. If I dont like their UI, I'm sure there'll be a way to install stock Android on it.

At least I'll have a whole-day battery, I'm charging my iPhone 5 in the midday to get thru the day.. :(

While similar, I think you'll see it slightly different. One thing Apple does like to do is contineu the previous model as a "cheap" alternative. I can't see them stopping this plan jsut yet

$0 - 8gb iPhone 5s
$99 - 16gb iPhone 6c
$199 - 16gb iPhone 6 w/ 4.7 inch screen
$299 - 32gb iPhone 6 w/ 5.5 inch screen
So you're saying Apple will introduce *three* new models? No way. Also, a 4.7" 32 GB would cost the same as 5.5" 32 GB. Doubt that.

$0: 8 GB 5c
$99: 16 GB 5s
$199: 16 GB 6 4.7"
$299: 16 GB 6 5.5"

I think it will be this. :(

It already hurts to pay the extra $100 for a measly 16GB extra. I pay that apple tax, but I won't pay an extra $100 on top of the reg scheme.

Wondering if I'm going to just end up getting a used iPhone 5S when the 6 comes out and not bothering with the 6. It's already looking like:

- It's going to be more expensive.
- The case design is going to be ugly, with tapered edges instead of the sharp current design.
- It's going to be larger and bulkier (the current size of the iPhone is perfect. If I need a bigger screen I pull out the iPad)

I'm going to be very sad if Apple ruins the iPhone by making these unwarranted changes. At the VERY LEAST, if they must raise the price by $100, start the base storage at 64GB (NOT 32!). Flash memory is so cheap that having to pay $200 to go from 16GB to 64GB is insulting.

honestly, if it's for a phone (size wise at least) competing with the Note 3 it actually makes sense, the Galaxy Note 3 is quite a bit more expensive than the Galaxy S line

In canada on day 1, note 3 (32GB) was $750 and on day 1, galaxy s5 (16GB) is $730. Not much more expensive. (iphone 5s 16GB is $719 in canada)

Haha yeah, Steve Jobs was all about decreasing profit margins.

Steve Jobs was all about making money and selling product.
Apple is already losing marketshare and mindshare and cannot make inroads in emerging markets at their current price point.

Why would Apple want to negotiate to lower costs *for carriers*? Your post makes no sense.

Apple wants to increase the price and increase the subsidy so that (in the US) the price stays the same.

Because there is increasing pressure from competition such as Samsung who offer more flexible agreements. With Apple you accept the prices set by them and sell them for that price - the only choice you have is the tariff level you offer to customers but the tariff level has had downward pressure which has shrunk their ability to subsidise plus make a 'reasonable' (in the carrier eyes) return on each contract. With that being said, this is all speculation so there is no evidence one way or another on what is actually happening but what is known is that carriers aren't happy by how much they have to subsidise by but they really have little room to manoeuvre and given the lacklustre upgrade that Samsung delivered with their S5 the carriers have little in the way of leverage when it comes to negotiating.

A 5" screen is the sweet spot. Any larger and it's a tad ridiculous. Having been playing with a Nexus 5 I don't know why Apple chose to stretch the screen that way.

Maybe for you. The crowd here argued with great passion against an iPad Mini because 9.7" was the minimum size per Jobs/Apple. "Apple would never", "those <other guys> smaller tablets are unusable" etc rained and rained and rained until Apple rolled out the mini and then it was "shut up and take my money", "I like it better than the maxi", and so on.

If you were here a couple of years ago, the "sweet spot" was the 3.5" "perfect" size as deemed by Apple.

Then it was the 4" as deemed by Apple.

If Apple rolls out a 15" and spins it as perfect, it will be so too.

I do think you picking a "sweet spot" approx. mid-way between the 2 rumored sizes is a great hedge though. You can be about right in the next incarnation of "perfect" whether we get a 4.7" or 5.5", or both.

Personally, I'm 6'5" with big basketball player hands. 3.5" or 4" has never been close to a "sweet spot" or "perfect" for my hands. I'm doubting 4.7" will be either. So I'll hope for both of what would have been called "abomination" sizes currently rumored even 2 years ago, now increasingly hedged with a lot of "I'll wait and see" and "it's kind of growing on me" since it looks like it's going to happen (with Apple iPhones).

Headlines, yes. Positive headlines which would attract buyers, no.

I think samcraig's comment wasn't that it wouldn't be headline worthy

But for some reason MacRumours decided they needed to inject opinion into a news article

They said "The ONLY news worthy"

there have already been several news worthy devices launched in 2014...

so, the statement isn't only extremely biased and crappy "journalism" but is also fundamentally untrue.

you're right. That makes a LOT more sense than the 6c.

If the base model is 32GB. Then i'd agree. If not then apple will definitely regret this decision. And would gift the press a field day.

Wonder whether this could be for the 5.5" iphone 6?

As to this pricing suggestion, if it could be sourced to Apple, I suspect this is more likely just one of those things to shift expectations toward a higher price and then positively surprise by keeping them the same. Remember when the iPad 1 rumor had prices being guessed at $999? Then, we were so relieved at a base model for "only" $499.

Besides, does Apple control the contract pricing for iPhones? I could swear that I saw just about every price for the 5s on contract soon after it rolled out. Maybe this is about Apple getting an extra $100 in the subsidy price behind the scenes rather than us consumers seeing a retail contract price increase of $100. I just don't see the carriers locking in a set contract price across all carriers.

Of course they are. That's why they're available free on contract, or BOGO. That's why Samsung is suing Electronic Times --trying to suppress the fact that there are serious problems and it's not selling well.

the Samsung S5 has gotten quite a lot of seriously good reviews.

"TrustedReviews.com" gave it a 4.8 / 5
CNET gives it a 9/10
MobileSyrup gave it a 9/10
Engadget gave it a 83/10
The Verge gave it a 7.8

Many news agency have also given it similar praise.

the reason for the discounts and contract rates is not because of what you say a "bad device"... But because Samsung is aggressively trying to get the phone into every bodies hands and are willing to offer large subsidies to do that.

as for actual sales numbers, we dont know. Since none of these phone companies actually release numbers. But indications are, Samsung did well, VERY well.

Well, if true, I'll just stick with my 5 until some sanity returns.

Too bad, because I'd love a bigger screen . . . but I refuse to be held hostage.

I am an Apple fanboy, but this is just stupid.

Perhaps you meant to write "I am a Macrumors fanboy, but this is just stupid."
Misek pushed out that steaming rumor. I wouldn't buy a used car from Misek, let alone rely on anything he writes about Apple.

If the ip6 sets sales records at $100 more and keeps the same 16/32/64gb memory sizes I'd have to laugh at just how many people throw away their money. It's already kind of nuts how you get gouged $100 for 16gb more of memory and people pay for it (including myself).

With Android pushing the lower end market, and windows phone also having numerous lower end phones how much market share will Apple end up with if they only have the high end consumers?

I, for one, don't mind an increase in size as long as they at least leave the option for a smaller phone. I do not want anything larger than my 5S; am I the only one left that actually uses their iPhone as a phone? Using a huge device as a phone is not only cumbersome, it looks positively ridiculous. And for heaven's sakes I'm hoping there's no return to the days of everyone having a bluetooth earpiece constantly sticking from their ear since they can't functionally use a 6-inch phone.
