I’m not a loyalist, but from my own view and anecdotal experience, I understand why Apple doesn’t make a touch Mac. I have a touch PC laptop and I have no desire to touch the screen (I only use the stylus for drawing). I also know people who got touch screen laptops but immediately stopped using the touch screen. The touch targets are too small, and it’s more ergonomic to keep my hands on the keyboard and trackpad for non-drawing use. Touch makes total sense on a handheld device. I think that’s what Steve was referring to when he said the finger is the best input tool. But at a desk or when a device is over a certain size, it makes more sense to put it down, and at that point touch a finger doesn’t make as much sense as a keyboard/trackpad/mouse.

I think PC manufacturers are probably just covering their bases by adding touch screens. Apple tends to stick more to their philosophies. Also PC manufacturers are probably trying to gain any edge they can over Macs. But I doubt the PC market share is so big because of touch screens. Probably more because they are generally less expensive, and because they’ve had a hold in the enterprise market since early days.

I do wish Apple made a portable Mac with stylus support though. Can’t draw with a trackpad. And a stylus is a precision tool, unlike a finger, so it works nicely with the small targets of a desktop OS.
I don’t disagree. I had a SurfaceBook for a while. Yes some of the smaller targets are annoying, but once I got the hang of it, the experience of having a full PC in my hands on the couch while I watched a movie and designed a project was really something.

The problem is, it would cut into Apple’s revenue. Why sell one device that can be a laptop and a tablet when we can sell a MacBook AND an iPad.

Imagine a MacBook Pro with detachable screen that becomes a full handheld device, but retains all the power. Sure in laptop mode you won’t touch the screen nearly as much. I didn’t with the SurfaceBook, but it was nice having one device that could pull double duty (fingerprints aside).

Incoming: 16“ iPad Pro plus REAL Magic Keyboard with battery, SSD, ports, etc when connected gives option for macOS 14
Outgoing: MacBook pros (in 15 years tho)….

This would be cool. Apple was granted a patent for this very concept back in 2014. One can dream

Bring on a 12" iPad Pro. If the 11" was just slightly bigger, perhaps achieved mostly with smaller bezels, it would be pretty much perfect.

Ideally:

* 12" screen
* Smart connector with USB-C and/or thunderbolt support, meaning that a magic keyboard can do data instead of just charging over its USB-C port
* Camera up the top in landscape mode

I couldn't imagine a better tiny tablet/laptop hybrid.

Anyone that used the Samsung Ultra S8 knows a bigger screen enhances the in-depth experience while consuming content and creating content.

I once saw the original 11 inch iPad with the big bezels, that thing was just huge
This would be huge literally & figuratively for Apple. The key will be to keep it light weight because by the time a protective case is added, it could weigh a bunch. 🤔

And then they will be frustrated when the iPad throttles under MacOS load due to its thin body.
The M2 Macbook Air 2022 doesn't even have USE its metal body for heat dissipation so being this will unlikely cause any SEVERE throttling (significantly more than in the M2 Macbook Air)

I feel like Apple probably has more up its sleeve than those in this thread are giving it credit for.

Someone else mentioned, and I think they’re right, that Apple’s not going to let anything like sideloading on any device where iPadOS is running on it. As a Mac, ONLY running apps from the App Store would have limited utility, I think it might be more likely that they just release an iPad form factor device that runs macOS.

Do people buy only iPads just because they’re cheaper than MacBooks (are all of them cheaper even now?)? I thought it was mostly because they wanted the tablet form factor.

Here in UK the tablets are just as expensive as laptops. 12.9 is max for me as a tablet before being too large

The pertinent question is if the traditional laptop is on the way out . A dual boot would let you chose your preferred environment. Would the pencil be able to replace the mouse in MacOS. Certainly. With that recent hoover, feature it would be even better.

I would buy a 16 inch for home use - Civ IV and other games, photo editing, movies, reading, emailing, making the cook books. Pure luxury, I know, but a man is allowed to have some weaknesses. Curiously, I would not buy one for work as it will be too large to travel with comfortably. So the correct size for the situation, just like a screw driver.

I agree, it is really blown out of proportion. The only advantage of a built-in calculator would probably be a shortcut button in Control Center. Would be cool, but not a huge deal.
Control Centre should really allow 3rd party apps access. Especially on the iPad it’s such a missed opportunity- so much wasted space. Could double as a staging area for stage manager or a spaces type interface. It could incorporate notifications too, to eliminate that other total waste of space on the iPad.
This is definitely bizarre. Is it even an iPad anymore? It'll probably be called something like the iPad studio, run iPadOS, with few if any professional apps.
Except all the professional apps already available, or..?

TBH I've fantasized about 'removing' the top lid display part of my 16" MacBook Pro and thinking it would be a beautiful new iPad design. I do not think it would be unwieldy at all since the heavier 'keyboard' side wouldn't be weighing it down and it would be THE 'ultimate' coach consumption device :) :apple:

It would finally make me upgrade from my 2017 12.9" iPad Pro for sure!

As some have said, such an iPad would not make any sense without a proper OS. Whether macOS or a significant update to iPadOS...

I would absolutely buy a 16in iPad pro with iPadOS (of course dual boot MacOS would be great but even just iPadOS would be ok). I guess people who think it makes no sence just use an iPad as Jobs intended in 2010. But not everyone uses it that way....
I have the 14.6in Tab S8 and while I like the size I don't like the aspect ratio. I much prefer the aspect ratio of my Surface Book 15. But the battery life the tablet portion is way to short for it to be used as a tablet (you can't even watch a full movie on it).
I don't use a TV anymore so the bigger the tablet the better (I could take it to any room and then put in on a stand to watch something, I have stands in every room).
Also I often use tablets a wireless portable monitors and this would be amazing at that....
I would also be great to remote into my laptops (remoting into a 15/16in laptop with a 12.9in iPad pro is not very comfortable).
And as a PDF viewer (including as a sheet music viewer) it would be unmatched.

Well there are rumors about an MacOS variant for M2 iPads. Guess this could be the dream device for many people.
Open the system settings in Ventura. What do you see OSX or IpadOS? There will be one OS at the end.

Why would any one want a 16 inch ipad?
The only reason i can think of is someone who draws on the iPad, and I am only guessing if he is a "pro" he would rather work on a full fledge app on the computer
Personally, I prefer working on an actual desktop OS and a Cintiq, but there are plenty of people who are disappointed with Wacom. Wacom have stopped innovating and only offer lower quality products for the same price as before, they also ditch support for products that are a couple years old. Huion has worse driver issues than Wacom.

I still think getting 5-10 years of use from a Cintiq is better than 3-5 years from an iPad at greater cost. But there is also a large group of people who started digital in Procreate, that’s what they know and everything else feels wrong. At least in our field (illustration), Procreate has singlehandedly been responsible for more traditional artists switching to digital than anything I’ve seen.

I know I'll get ridiculed for saying so, but I really wish that Apple would buy Peloton, incorporate it into fitness plus, treat the hardware (bike, tread, rower) as a one time purchase but use these larger iPads as connectable screens that get upgraded every so often.
