I mean why not go larger than 16"? Remember the Microsoft Surface Table (2008/2017)?
It would definitely need ability to run Mac apps to go larger than 16", but yeah why not? It could be paired with a Wacom like stand that could tilt it at different angles to use it for either drawing or display. It certainly wouldn't be very mobile, but that is fine.

I am still confused as to why this calculator app was never a norm from the start in the app list.
I’m still confused about this obsession that Apple should release their calculator app for the iPad. It’s very basic. There are much much better options on the App Store. The amount of whining that occurs about it here is baffling.

No one ever answers this when I ask, but tell me, why MUST Apple force their terrible calculator app on us when such things as PCalc exist?

Growing, but still far short in many areas - eg. mathematical software, where is MatLab, Mathematica etc? Some Python, but not if you want the full mathematical and data science stack.
Beginning with iOS 16, App developers have full access to all of the RAM in iPad Pros. Crossing my fingers that library will grow even more.

I'm sure graphic artists would love it... Can Apple find suppliers of screens at that size? in OLED? (assuming the switch to OLED occurs before these are out)

Who the hell wants or needs this??

It will run an OS clearly unsuitable for a large screen and will be horribly expensive.

I suspect only Federico Viticci would buy this monstrosity as he seems to spunk off the iPad in general.
Last week there was a rumor of a "macOS Lite" coming to iPad Pro models next Fall. If both rumors are true, this would make a lot of sense.

At the size it should definitely feature a macOS mode, it would be the dream computer

I would seriously consider changing my professional workflow from Mac to iPad, were this to happen. Even if I couldn't quite do that, I'd definitely buy one for the increased creative opportunity the bigger tablet would give me.

If so, then you’re right.

At this stage though, given the debacle around Stage Managed and System Preferences, there is every chance Apple will screw it up.

Why do people like you feel the need to post this angry nonsense?? You clearly just want a Mac. Fine. Take it and pipe down. Some of us understand quite well why we like our iPads and why we'd be delighted to have a bigger one. Justifying that to a guy who just has his panties in a twist because he wants something entirely different is tedious... and people like you wouldn't listen anyway.

So Fall 2023, we could potentially have

iPad 10.9"
iPad Air 10.9"
iPad Pro 11" / 12.9"
iPad Ultra 14.1" / 16"

I don't see the current 10.2" iPad sticking around much longer.

You're right. There are a lot of people that prefer iPadOS instead of macOS.

I doubt this rumour will come to pass. iPadOS and iOS are much more modern in their design, and are already reworked versions of MacOS originally. I really doubt Apple is suddenly going to develop a new OS based on older, frankly outdated paradigms, or rework an older traditional OS like macOS in the way this rumour foresees - least of all for a device that they have only just forked a new OS for.

The macOS and iOS platforms are largely interchangeable now...

There's no reason why macOS software couldn't run on iPad.
I don't see any reason why not for well equipped iPads at least for a large class of Mac apps. I'd imagine Apple would still put limits on background processes. With Stage Manager there is a windowing system. It doesn't seem much more challenging then bringing iPad apps to Mac. The only strange part might be the cursor. Would the iPad use the Mac cursor when in a Mac app?

I look forward to the day I get to see a smiley Finder face on my iPad to browse the Mac side of the filesystem. I think the iPad Pro is destined to be a hybrid Mac/iPad device.

macOS on a device that looks like an iPad Pro isn’t necessarily iPadOS and macOS running on the same device. They could just have a device that runs macOS without any other OS on it. If they see money in it, they’d do it.

I have an iPad and like it. I’d love to replace my MBP with one, but that’s never going to happen even if the screen size is the same as my MBP.

Unfortunately Apple has handled the iPad Pro/OS badly recently and it has put people off replacing.

So as things stand, beyond niche creative uses, what purpose does this serve?

Clearly Apple thinks it has one, of course.

Now, if the rumours of MacOS Lite are true and it’s a workable OS, then yes they could have a winner.

Launching this now though just smacks of doing something because you can, not because there is a genuine reason.
