Apple aren't doing this because it is a copy; if it were a copy they'd sue ASUS. They are doing it because the product cuts into their market share, because the target audience is the same. I don't know if I like it, but I don't think there should be a law against it, if apple really are doing it.

The M-word anybody?

Wondering if and when a troll will fall into the "monopoly trap," as in:

Troll: "Apple is such a bully, using their monopoly power to force poor lil' 'ole Pegatron to give up Asus."

Us: "Oh puhleeze. Apple? With their 5% worldwide market share? Check your math."

i don't understand what's the problem with pegatron.. they are only manufacturing laptop FOR asus, so at least apple shall sue asus...
instead apple is making pressure to pegatron, forcing them to refuse asus work, just because they are producing iphones for apple..
in my imaginary world this behavior should be prohibited.

sorry for my bad english, i really suck at this kind of argument.

C'mon, Apple. No one likes a bully. Your products are clearly better than others. If this was a size of balls contest, that's ridiculous. If this was a manufacturing capacity at Pegatron being spread too thin, then maybe that's different.

Sorry, don't agree with this. Pegatron has access to the techonology to make the machines by virtue of its Apple contract. To turn around and do it for a competitor and do it so it looks almost the same is biting the hand that feeds you.

Apple, not being a bully. Pegatron biting the hand that feeds it.

Maybe they are? What's wrong with that exactly?

I would hope that Apple believing they hold some kind of IP with regard to the design of their laptops would go after ASUS as opposed to bullying their very own supply chain.

I would like to hold Apple in higher regard to everyone else when it comes to taking care of IP but it doesn't look like I can.

Reading through and seeing so many "Apple is so anti-competitve"... "why is Apple always picking on the little guy?"... this is crap.

Since Apple/Jobs/Ives came up with translucent design colors for their iMacs and calling things "iThis" or "iThat", people have been copying them on all fronts. In the early 00s, I could be walking through HOUSEWARES and see translucent colors all over the place... not even Electronics, ... Housewares! Whether software or hardware, people have been stealing from Apple forever. It's now commonplace and people simple consider it "being competitive... it's not. It's theft. Apple finally has finally, I suppose, had enough. Good. For. Them.

Using that analogy Ford Motor Corp. Should't care if General Motors makes a car that looks just like a Mustang in the same plant that Ford uses right ?

Your analogy rebuttal is terrible. Competing car manufacturers collaborate on stuff all the time.

How ironic because your post is crap too.

Like Apple have never stolen anything. EVER. They are whiter than white. Good for them indeed

Any unique machines that Apple invented to create the Air are still patented. If they are using things that someone else invented to create their components, then it has nothing to do with Apple.

And since when is ASUS competing with Apple? You obviously don't know anything about Pegatron's history.

This is bullying by Apple. Pure and simple

Has everyone forgotten that Apple invested a good bit into the tooling that Pegatron is using to make those machines?

They can take their business where they want, they're giving Pegatron a chance to keep it.

Wait. Are you implying that Apple and Asus are "collaborating"? Hahahahahahaha

So eager to show how cool you are that you can't even wait for someone to say it?

That takes away any cool points you were hoping to cash in...

you forgot Steve Job's infamous quote about stealing:D

Nope I didn't. That quote just gets posted too much around here. Along with "As an AAPL shareholder..." and "Shut up and take my money" along with the Fry from futurama pic and "Any competition is good competition"

Using that analogy Ford Motor Corp. Should't care if General Motors makes a car that looks just like a Mustang in the same plant that Ford uses right ?

My guess if GM made a car that looks exactly like the Ford Mustang - Ford would sue - In some ways the new Camaro does look like it - but that is stretching it. Now if GM uses Ford plant with Ford using it - then shame on both of these companies. Unless they have an agreement to share resources.

The problem here is these companies don't have that agreement. If Apple was smart ( not sure even if possible ), they would isolated the manufacturing here in the US to there own companies - at least with critical designed components that make them unique.

that doesn't make it right.

Define "right".
As long as it's legal, it's perfectly right for Apple and their investors.

In case you haven't noticed, it's an extremely competitive world out there, and everyone will do everything they can to improve their sales and maximize their profit. Do you really think Asus, HP or Dell would shy away from similar actions if they saw an opportunity to hurt the competition?

In any case, we don't have enough information to determine whether this is legal, or whether it is even true.

heh we both joined at the same time too..I'd say the futurama pic is by far the most posted since I've started posting here.

Apple wasn't the first to use the "i" prefix ;there where products named iSomething the iMac. Apple have lost 'i' product trade mark lawsuits.

key word "Collaborate", not copy

They can take their business where they want, they're giving Pegatron a chance to keep it.

Now if this tooling is used to make competitor products then that is a problem.

I see a problem in car world if say Ford invests money in some new manufacturing technique for making automobiles to give them a competitive edge and then the company that developed the technique sells the technique to GM so that they can used. I would be upset if I was Ford.

Interesting thing if Pegatron gavel these tools to other companies or ASUS.

It shouldn't surprise me, but somehow it does seem to when people here hold Apple to different standards than any other company. If you switched the name Apple with Microsoft for this story, I can say with absolute certainty that some of the most rabid defenders would be screaming in outrage over it...

they can make profit as much as they want but asus is no danger to apple. we should keep all in mind that competition is very important. without asus etc. apple wouldn't be forced to be innovative.

Copying someone's ideas and designs isn't at all what I'd call a healthy competition, and it sure will not force Apple to innovate. In fact, Apple could release almost the same product every year this way. It also doesn't really improve the choice for the customer when they can only choose between "the original" and several cheap knock-offs that were all produced in the same factory.

I really hate to see the day when all notebooks look like Macbooks and all tablets are virtually identical to iPads.
Please, Asus, HP etc, get off your lazy asses and develop your own stuff. We all know you can do it.
