first off I hate monoplys. second, I think that asus is not even that similar, but look at that HP, even the nicest company would sue them, why isint apple?

they can make profit as much as they want but asus is no danger to apple. we should keep all in mind that competition is very important. without asus etc. apple wouldn't be forced to be innovative.
Asus isn't forcing Apple to innovate by cloning designs. They are actually doing quite the opposite. They are removing any incentive to innovate from the market and forcing the competition to be about price. When this behavior is rampant all computers looks the same and the only differentiator is price. That is not healthy and does not help the industry at all.

I don't see a problem. Apple didn't force Pegatron to do anything. They can vote with their dollar too. Why should they do business with the manufacturer of a competitor if they don't have to?

they are just selling a "maybe" similar product at a lower price. which then forces the premium manufacturers like apple to engineer more innovative products to justify their higher price point. similar: generic drugs <-> patented drugs.

Apple seems to be turning into the 800 pound gorilla that Intel was a few years back when Intel pressured PC manufacturer's to not use AMD processors, Apple products sell by themselves and are superior to their competition so there is no need for such tactics.

This is different. Intel was punishing their customers (Dell, HP, etc) if they chose AMD. And Intel were crooks and bullies for doing it. Apple is in no way punishing their customers. They are applying pressure on their manufacturer to stop manufacturing a competing product that is in many ways a clone to the MBA. It is easier for Pegatron to manufacture Asus's MacBook Air clone than any other manufacturing facility that does not manufacture the MacBook Air due to their obvious similarities, so Asus was getting too good a deal leaching off of the process made for Apple (not even getting into how they stole the design). I'm not a lawyer but this does not sound right, so good for Apple.

So Apple has exclusive rights to "thin" and made out of and/or looks like "metal"?

I love my 13" MBA, but there is no way that I'm going to mistake that Asus thing for a MacBook Air... not even a little bit.

are you seriously comparing laptops to drugs?

Using that analogy Ford Motor Corp. Should't care if General Motors makes a car that looks just like a Mustang in the same plant that Ford uses right ?

That argument doesnt really work since Ford and GM actually build their own cars here in the US in their own factories with the exception of 2 or 3 cars that are made in Canada/Mexico.

soon companies will be sued for selling a phone that is a rounded rectangle or one that makes calls lol

I think Apple takes it a little too far, and I don't really agree with anyone here that says "can't companies design their own products?"

I think the Envy was a bit over the top, but the way Apple designs things is simple. A simple look, that way companies use that as the stand in figure of a "Laptop" and not to be too specific about it. Apple did not create the idea of a thin laptop, and any laptop that is thin is not automatically copying the Air. Also, an aluminum body is not exactly creative.

copying designs is in no way competitive... its actually the opposite

But it is not a mba

This is bullying by Apple. Pure and simple

Have you looked at the two laptops? If Apple designs and produces a laptop, and someone else COPIES that laptop's alumimun chassis, precisely - that is a flagarant theft of IP. This is what was done.

Apple is simply staying "You will not steal my ideas, through a supplier I am using". No one said it was a MBA, but it's a rip-off the MBA's case - all you have to do is look at the two of them, they are practically identical.

At first I said Huh ? Then I went and looked at the Zenbook. It looks almost exactly like a Macbook Air.

Good for Apple.

Why can't these companies design their own laptops and tablets.

Lazy people. Just do what Apple does. That's the new PC mantra.

Exactly like a MacBook Air?

Or way more attractive and with better specs than a MacBook Air? I think the latter.

We don't know the details. Pegatron may just need to allocate more production resources to the Air, so they cut Asus. Not too crazy.

That is true. Does anyone here really think that Pegatron would tell the world that Apple is forcing it to not build for the competition? And after blabbing to the world, Pegatron is still building for Apple?

This story stinks of false info.

lol do u even own a MBA? topmounter and I have already mentioned that up close they aren't even close. Even before I tried it out at the msoft store it was apparent.

Their similarities?

Thin, silver, and being a laptop.

Typical bully-boy fascist tactics from the big Apple behemoth. Smash all competition then charge big bucks once the consumer has less choice. Disgusting behaviour. The worst of humanity but the best of corporate greed....unless you are a fanboy in which case this can only be good for the whole world.

Relax, this happens all the time. Bakeries make contracts with malls to restrict the amount of bakeries in that mall. Coca Cola makes contracts with schools to get exclusive rights to those schools.

We don't know the full story. It could very well be that Apple requested Pegatron to make a choice, as Apple could likely claim all production capacity of Pegatron. In quality assurance terms it's easier to manage quality if the product is produced in only once factory and not many with different production processes.

In addition... Those people that stop buying apple products now should think about where the other devices they will own come from and how they are produced. Do you really think these are produced by panda bear breeding, rose cultivating Greenpeace activists that serve their employees coffee at the conveyor belt, and have a dog walking service for dog owning employees? Samsung, ASUS et al. are just as evil or nice as Apple, Google, Dell etc. etc.

Conclusion: if you disagree with these kind of practices and vote to not use those products than you will have to live in an igloo in greenland with clothes made out of leaves, as this is how the world works now. Welcome to the consumer oriented and driven world.

I can't believe some these childish "waaaa Apple is a bully!" posts on here. It's called standing up for your work and not bending over backwards like a pansy.

Some of you need to nut up and understand this is anything but bullying. Some random asian manufacturer tried making a bad move and Apple called them out on their BS fair and square. Apple did the right thing here, and good for them.

yes, I have and no, they are not

This is ********. Please don't defend this stupid move by Apple. If you want to compete with someone, do it with the consumer. Not with the supply chain.
