No one would buy an LCD when oled is available. It doesn’t take a genius to know this. The XR was doomed to fail the moment they equipped it with an lcd. Dual cameras should be a standard at that price. You can get an S9 for cheaper and it comes with dual cameras and an oled. It’s a no brainier.
You forgot to add, in your opinion.

It’s my speculation the Xs and max are stealing sales from the xr. Not the other way around. The xr is better than the s9 simply because it’s an iPhone. But ymmv. The xr is probably eating the s9 sales for lunch.

Is that why Apple is blaring XR ads along with trade in prices all over the place? Resorting to push notifications and forum displays in stores reeks of desperation.

There was a production cut for both XR and XS but none for Max. Price would skyrocket next year if the XS Max sells the highest at those prices.

You don't know that. Factually the S9 has the better hardware. The S9 display eats the XR display for breakfast.

If customers are not buying, we may get a reasonable price next year or a XR which is not crippled by an inferior display which people seems smart enough to not buy at this point.

Simply and utterly amazing.

The laughs keep on coming from this one.

No. "Probably" did not cover the statement. That was another, later remark concerning sales.
You have to put imo when making a separate statement. Are you a "do as I say not as I do" type of person?
Okay, so you understand the entire post was imo and not a factual statement then. Great. I give you permission to keep reminding me, and I give me permission to keep reminding you. :)

You can see apple's guidance for the next quarter. They are rarely off the mark by much. The xr is the phone they are marketing to first time ios'ers, imo.

No factually the S9 doesn't have better hardware as this is totally subjective. That's like saying vanilla is better than chocolate.

In the case of the phones it depends on how much weight you please on the internals vs externals. OLED is not necessarily a positive, especially when it gives people headaches.

Seems Apple is resorting to in your face marketing and push notifications to increase sales. Sales not good as expected I bet. They are now displaying offers at the store.

Their strategy is pretty clear. Lower the unit sales but maintain profits through higher prices. But with all these desperate marketing tactics like demo loop videos, dont think it’s going so well. They are using forum displays for telling the price instead of using it for learning lol.
It’s hard to cite marketing as a source for an entire lineup not doing well.

Also, it doesn’t mean that’s not working. Apple is under huge pressure to deliver results because they sell such an insane amount of product and need to show growth. $88.1B in sales last Q1 make it a tall order to expand that.

“Selling well” is relative. If they put up $88B again, it means they sold a lot of everything, but it will be a disaster for Wallstreet. Amazing that $1B per day in sales will be viewed as a disaster, but that’s the life of a publicly traded company.

My point is it might not be a sign of failure, but it’s a sign that Apple is having to push harder than ever to post record revenues.

Now Apple’s homepage even has deals mentioning the Xs and Xr when you trade in an iPhone 7. Don’t think this has ever been done before, and it’s looking very much like this article concerning marketing directives is correct. Methinks the market has rejected Apple’s $1000 starting point for their flagship phone. Apple got all the early-adopters, and the need the newest thing people last year. Now the rest of the market is saying no thank you and the former group of people don’t see much reason to upgrade from an X to a Xs. Especially since they just dropped at least a grand on it a year ago or less.

Nvidia charges $1200 for their 2080ti which should have been $700 like all their flagships since last year but people still buy it because it is the most powerful consumer video card on the planet with zero competition. Just like Apple they are charging crazy money for their GPUs but it works because of no competition. That's not going to work for Apple as competition exists. $1200 for a phone which essentially is the same as a Note 9 which even in a worst case scenario costs $1000 makes me think that Apple believes anything with their logo on it would sell no matter the price as there is nothing factually unique about their flagship. That and that crippled LCD phone they call an iPhone at $800 is insulting the customer intelligence.

Also it remains to be seen how often those who paid $1200 upgrade. If they retain their phones for long, its bad news for Apple as that's just short term revenue.

Its supported by Apple bombarding users with ads and offers. I have never seen Apple being so aggressive with sales before. Has to be a reason behind it.

Dual cameras and oled is on Apple's flagship and not there on the XR. This is why the XS and the XS Max are superior to the XR according to Apple. Well, the same features are there on the S9. So how is it subjective? I am using Apple's own features on their flagships and comparing that to Samsung and at what prices Samsung sells those features.

You don't like FaceID?

And Apple doesn't give a damn about the XR looking at all the features they removed. It doesn't even have your precious 3DT.

But the Xs Max does not have out of the box-

Fast Charging

An SPen equivalent

Apple would want close to $200 for these features

AND micro SD slot to give low cost expansion of up to 512GB adequate for music, photo and video files.

Not really comparable :)

I cannot believe how much people are looking into Apple offering $100 off.

A huge portion of Apple’s audience are not tech people, they do not follow Apple news and will only look at upgrading their phone once the glass on their phone is broken, it has sunk to the bottom of the ocean or someone stole it. Therefore they would then go either into the Apple store or a carrier and ask for the iPhone of choice.

This segment is also a hugely profitable one for Apple because they don’t HAVE to upgrade but have the means to, so by putting this in their peripheral vision, might be a stroke of genius. This is marketing 101. It’s as much of a hypothesis as ‘Apple is doomed’, but is very possible. If things were as bad as everyone says they were, Apple probably would have pushed through a warning to its shareholders by now.

Right nobody really knows what the sales and what is the trajectory.

Each part of the phone may or may not be important. For example to me oled is the bottom of the list. Soc and operating system important to me, screen important to you. It’s all subjective.

I’d take my precious 3dt over your precious oled. Face id is not a make it or break it feature.

They are not comparable but I vote with my dollars and the Xs max wins. Again subjective in nature.

Again, Apple has to be aggressive to sell the most product of all time. They sold $88.1B in products and services in 90 days last Xmas. To beat that by 7%, they are likely going to need to be more aggressive than ever.

Don’t confuse aggressive sales tactics, marketing, or even strstegies you’ve never seen before as proof the product is struggling. To me, it’s only proof that they are trying to sell iPhones in a very difficult comparison quarter.

They have to get people excited about trying a brand new product like Xr, because it’s so different from the “standard” iPhone we’ve had since the iPhone 6.

Let’s see how the numbers look when they report in January and we will have our proof.

That was the right decision. They are still going to be good. Even at 75M versus 77M last year let’s say...analysts would go crazy even if revenue was up more than expected.

Focus on unit sales now is pointless. They are going to be flattish.

I don’t think anyone is ‘upset’. I think people are just recognizing how out of character it is for Apple to market their products the way they are.

I see nothing wrong with Apple improving their trade-in offers so that they are competitive with what consumers can otherwise get outside. People used to complain all the time that the rates offered by Apple suck, and now they are complaining when Apple improves them?

I believe this isn’t a case of Apple trying to turn around iPhone demand, but rather beefing up Apple’s efforts to sell iPhones through its direct channel. This is simply Apple moving with the times and recognising that the people the buying iPhone Xr are likely to be upgraders, and as such wish to draw more attention to their own trade-in offers.

Apart from what is likely a one-off scenario, Apple hasn’t exactly done anything to directly cut iPhone pricing.

I think the doom and gloom surrounding Apple is getting out of hand. Every new titbit of news or information is being twisted to fit the narrative that Apple has lost the plot. I think it won’t be long before someone tracks the number of times that Tim Cook visits the toilet in a day and finds a way to spin that as yet more evidence that Apple is doomed.

Sad that Bloomberg has apparently stooped to sensationalising Apple-related news to gain readership. I guess this is Mark Gurman’s new KPI now.

Nobody is complaining about getting a good trade-in value on their phone. It’s the fact that it’s the first thing you see when you go to the Apple homepage that’s weird. Apple has never been one to talk about limited-time deals on brand new products on their home page. Can you name another time they’ve done that? Kind of cuts into the premium image they want to project.

The point isn’t that Apple is doomed, just that they (and other premium smartphone manufacturers) are starting to experience declining smartphone volume for the first time as the market reaches saturation in countries where premium phones can sell. That’s the real reason Apple will no longer be reporting unit sales, not some 3D chess Tim Cook is engaging in. Again, not a problem exclusive to Apple, but where it hurts Apple especially relative to the other manufacturers is that most of their revenue and profit comes from smartphone sales. The profit part is where this will really hurt Apple, because the other manufacturers like Samsung don’t derive nearly as much profit from phone sales as Apple does. Apple and the rest of the FANG crew are usually seen as growth stocks, but it’s becoming hard to see where that future growth is going to come from. It may just be that these stocks are going to become like older blue chips and be more ‘steady as she goes’, rather than a growth sector.

But but the XR is the best phone for most people. It can’t miss. The clueless reviewers were in love even though they personally wouldn’t buy it. The majority on here were foaming at the mouth. It can’t miss. A sure thing. Lol.

The problem with getting sucked into an anti-Apple narrative is that everything can be interpreted as a hint that Apple is failing, if that is all you are on the lookout for.

By this logic, Apple can never try anything new ever. Times change, Apple is simply evolving their sales tactics in keeping with the times like any responsive company would, and that’s really all there is to it.
