I, for one, will not trust my $1000+ item to a $10 case.
Waste your money all you want (“you do you,” as you said). Fact is, there is no tangible difference in the protection of a quality 10 dollar case and whatever big-name, high priced case you need to feel better about. Well, there is one difference, the mental hurdle that marketing has conditioned you too. I have a 16 dollar MagSafe case from a no-name company and it’s taken a couple of drops, works great and feels fantastic.

All cases perform the job just fine, this isn’t life saving medical-grade equipment here.

Didn't stop an early Apple from sending $27 million in new Lisas to the landfill (which was a remarkable product, just too ridiculously expensive).

If production of FineWoven has stopped, Apple needs to quietly and quickly remove it from sale regardless of stock. Better to take the lumps, than try selling every unit of something you know is # because profits.
I agree— stop selling it immediately and buy up all remaining stock— Apple is hurting their brand by keeping this on the market.

My case looks like holy hell after three months. I was really disappointed with it and honestly one of the only times I have felt genuinely ripped off by apple. It doesn’t even fit right and I had to modify with a piece of folded up post-it stuff inside to make the lock button align properly with the case.

I got one of the watch straps with my new AppleWatch. I used it for wearing my extra watch whilst I was sleeping. After a week I started getting a rash. Never had that problem with any other strap especially the leather one. I've been using that for the daytime and only after 3 years is it beginning to crack. Now I have to find a third party replacement.

Common sense was thrown out the window on this one - fabric over plastic isn’t going to age well.

That would be wild for Apple standards. But writing has been on the wall since initial reviews.

Now what do you replace this with when you have little time to act but want to improve on quality? Off-the-shelf vegan leather?

Apple will have known Finewoven was a dud for a long time - maybe since before it was even released. They will have been working on a replacement for some time already.

Well, that “Natural leather” was still wrapped around a plastic shell. That’s hardly recyclable.
Yes, that is a factor. Perhaps Apple could’ve used a more environmentally friendly material for the shell. I know it’s probably easier said than done because they are fighting a battle between durability and what’s friendly for the environment.

I think that was the goal. NOBODY should be tossing recyclable materials in the garbage. That's where the problem starts. Is recycling a perfect science? No, but it's way better than just burying the stuff we're done with in the ground.

Apple was using 68% recycled polyester, which itself can be recycling again, so into the recycling bin it should go, NOT the garbage.
I totally agree with you, but for most places in the USA that’s the not the reality. I can’t speak for other countries and how they do things. What’s even worse is some recyclable items that people put in recycling bins just go to the landfill. In some areas they either can’t or don’t want to recycle certain types of materials, but want people to feel good like they are recycling. I’ve talked to people who worked at these places and it’s kind of sad.

Ideally, one of two things would happen. With Apple being the environmentally conscious corporation that they are, they could offer a recycling service where you can return used Apple cases for them to recycle or they could make cases that decomposed better in landfills.

Didn’t work too well for the animal involved or the planet in general. A little humanity and empathy goes a long way. Oops, forgot, most of the populous (especially the US) are too ignorant and self-involved to understand the bigger picture.
Of course it didn’t work well for the animal involved. If it was some poor animals that were just harvested for leather, I would say that’s awful, but these cattle are most likely beef cattle. If the leather wasn’t sold, it would just likely be thrown away.

I guess one could argue that people shouldn’t eat meat but that’s a whole off-topic and probably much more controversial subject

Anyone hoping that Apple will bring back leather doesn't understand the rules of the game. Absolutely zero likelihood of them rowing back on that. And honestly their latter cases sucked anyway. iPhone 12 onwards they were plastic coated junk. Most leather fans moved on a long time ago so it's no real loss.
Exactly this! The last good leather cases were for the iPhone 11 and before. The 12-14 ones were atrocious.
