In a very real sense Apple and Disney are the same company. It’s absolutely expected that Disney is directly involved and trying to make the Vision into an incentive to subscribe to Disney Plus.

Only in Bob Iger's dreams are they the same company, but if I was giving out a trophy to the best mainstream VisionOS developer — Disney would get it.

Hopefully, Disney can afford to keep paying that team long enough to develop more content. Disney Software likes to start a project and abandon it a few years later due to resource constraints from other parts of the company.

So in other words, keep everything that was premium about the first generation and roll into the second, keep standards high but at a lower price? That makes a lot of sense. It really does. The rage addicts that have been sobbing for months that the AVP is dead are pissed today. 😆

This current generation is probably good for 3 years. They have a lot to learn. Just create a sleeker model at $1K - $1.5K(ish) price point and many more would be invested in it.

Still waiting on that killer app / use case
3 years? You’re kidding right? The most sophisticated piece of consumer tech on the planet and that’s what you figure eh?

Vision Pro doesn’t have a wow factor or gotta have app.

The best use case scenario is flying according to Apple. But many people don’t fly frequently enough to justify a $3,500+ device. Not to mention it’s big and bulky to use in economy class.

My bet is Apple tries a cheap vision device, it fails, and then Apple gives up and quits entirely.

By the time the cheap device comes out, the product will be a joke because of known poor sales.

Apple trying to salvage the parts, but the reality is that they completely mistimed the development and introduction of this device. The technology simply isn't there yet to make this product an attractive proposition.

I've got to wonder if Tim Cook actually still wears the thing.

I am obviously not an executive at Apple, and Apple has overcome and gloom for decades.

I am genuinely curious to see in this category of devices how it’s all going to go over the next few years.

They should exhibit "courage" and make it with plastic. Cheaper. Lighter. Just call it Magic Plastic or something. BOOM!
They really need Jony Ive's voice in the ad gushing over how this plastic is inspired by a specific natural environment or even an element like ivory, brings an essence of beauty in it's laser-etched texture which was designed by craft artisans inspired by ancient papyrus and leather, and is far denser and sturdy than it's "impossibly light" weight would indicate.

Sounds like you desperately wish you could afford one to me… yknow what’s so dumb about statements like this? The original Apple 2e was about 3k cad at launch. Adjust that to modern day currency value, it isn’t far off from where we are today with Vision Pro. Frankly the haters of this product are limited by their own sense of hyperbole and have absolutely zero vision of the future. Pun fully intended.

they must of lost a billion dollars on this, albeit a drop in the Apple bucket.

Tim the Visionary Pro

Apple’s definitely in a weird spot with VP.

On one hand, I don’t think they’ve demonstrated how it’s a significantly better experience for most computing tasks. The most compelling are (1) productivity on the go (2) unique entertainment experiences.

For (1), they need to improve the FoV and quality of cameras and battery life to make useable for work on flights and such.

For (2), they need a plethora of spatial content like the sports games they demonstrated and more movies and personal videos with spatial/3D aspect to them. But then it’s a chicken/egg problem bc normies don’t have the VP since it’s so expensive. So they need to push for cheaper mainstream VP.

But most importantly for both, they need to significantly cut down on the weight and bulk of the headset so that putting it on and taking it off is no more burdensome then actual goggles.

Feel like the tech isn’t there to make this more than a high end prototype.

A poorly executed idea is a poorly executed idea. I can personally easily afford one, or two, or ten, but I have zero because it's not worth the price. End of story. It's isolating, the front screen is creepy, it's locked down, it can't take non-Apple sources (hdmi, etc.), you look like an absolute tool wearing one...on and on and on.

The hardware maybe physically be worth it, as in cost to produce, but the end product is not.

Apple had a vision of the future, and it was wrong, or a decade too soon. Either way, the Vision Pro isn't the future, for the consumer or Apple, at least with the current implementation.

I've used it a few times, and it's simply not worth the price. A close of friend of mine owns one and told me he hasn't picked it up since early May...he got bored with it and couldn't find a use case. My cousin owns one too, but he works at the Spaceship.

My buddy and his kids love their Quest, however.
This is an important note. The quest isn't trying to be a Spatial Computing device. It's an entertainment device. And it entertains well. The AVP doesn't entertain as well as the quest other than perhaps the 5-10 minute demo. The AVP needs to excel at something and right now it feels like it doesn't. Apple assumed the public would "just figure it out" but we can't really see their vision beyond the relatively basic set of capabilities they've given us, at an astronomical price I might add.

Good move. They need to focus as this is still a nascent market and needs as much focus as possible. I think they should help provide and make more accessible the tools for content creators, adjacent tools, accessory makers, and most importantly roadmap infrastructure beyond the App Store.
This is much different than when the iPhone was released. There was already a vibrant marketplace that was exploding when the iPhone was released with an eager consumer and a device pipeline already in place. They need to push the market like a locomotive this time around instead of just jumping into the jet stream.

I use my AVP daily and it is worth every penny. Producing a cheaper one is a good thing, but I doubt they are scrapping plans of the next version of AVP. It is half the cost of the first Macintosh when adjusted for inflation, which I consider a major accomplishment. I will eagerly buy the next AVP version, I do not want a reduced features device. I want more features for the same price.

I don’t believe that at all. Apple would not cancel a project like this just after launching the first gen product. I’m sure that they will even release a cheaper version along with the successor of the current one.
Yeah, their name isn't Spotify!

I would like a version that’s made just for watching 3D movies.

Tim Cook might agree with you as that seems to be only the thing he will admit to using it for. It's the one thing it's good at.

Even if the new lower cost version was 2k to start, that may be enough to start building some traction.

Version one is the foundation. Version 2 and beyond are the consumer refined models. Eventually, there will be a couple models and possibly an SE model for entry level/general consumer AR glasses.

This was always the plan. The fortune 1000 and Governments are the foundation model target markets.
