I dont wear watches..

is there anyone else that doesn't wear a watch
as much as this sounds cool
I don't need an iphone on my wrist at all times
can't wait for the iPhone 6 though

$400 is pretty expensive for an iPhone accessory. I mean, that's over half the unsubsidized price of the iPhone itself. If a lot of functioning involved in the watch either comes from or is processed by the phone, the price needs to be significantly lower. I would expect $199 for an entry-level model, with full-functioned, flagship-style devices around $299.

Let's not forget that Apple has Paul Deneve (former YSL CEO) running the retail strategy for this. He's got a couple other former executives from luxury retail working for him (one is a former sales exec for Tag Heuer). My guess is Apple will have multiple products to cover a wide range of price points but the stuff to ooh and ahh people will be positioned as luxury fashion, not trying to compete with Moto, LG or Samsung.

If Apple sold iWatches priced from $200 to $10,000 I wouldn't be very surprised.

$400 is not a range, it's a price point. $400 - $401 is a range, as is $199 - $599!!

Yes, a range has to have uppper and lower limits. Since $400.00 is the only price mentioned, this is not a range, but a price point, as you have stated.

Inside sources are now saying the name won't be "iWatch", but rather "TimePod"

Yeah, those guys are so inside they are outside looking in.

This isn't the time for Apple to get cocky. They need to forgo the apple tax and price themselves at or below the competition. I'm sorry. But a the iPhone 6 costs will cannibalize the success of the iWatch if its priced at $400. People won't be able to afford both.

I stopped reading the minute I saw "Apple tax".

If this "watch" has ABC functions such as a Suunto or higher-end Casio, then the opportunity to develop apps that rival the dedicated watches does beg for higher pricing. Further, the watch could continually be updated with newer software revisions. A high-end Suunto with ABC and heart rate capabilities is about $400.

Apple is floating a price point before release. They will know if it will sell at that price point. Also, just how many is Apple looking to sell in the first 6m-1yr? 1,000, 10,000, 1,000,000? That affects price.

Personally the lowest I see for the device is $279.00. :apple:

I would definitely believe Apple charging $399 for the first generation iWatch. Take the MacBook Air for example - it started at $1799 and then dropped to $1499 with the next generation.

I think $299 would be my max for this item.

I think its quite interesting that we really still have NO idea what it is going to look like or what exactly it is going to do.

Apple "leaked" the $400 price so that when it launches at $299 (far higher than other wearables) people will think they got a deal. This is the same thing Apple did when launching the iPad, they leaked $1000 as a price so when it came out at $499 (which was higher than the mini full notebooks so popular at the time) it seemed still a good deal.

Apple wants reporters to say $249-299 is a good price, not "high" compared to sub $199 wearables from samsung etc. To help prime that pump they are leaking higher prices that won't be correct.

This is exactly what I was getting at. Sure the $400 might sound steep but there are already many useful devices out there that goes for more than that.

Also if this is a well made watch $400 is actually rather cheap (relatively speaking). Considering you have citizen and seiko that does nothing more than time keeping that sells for $500 easily. What is so different about this watch?

I can't see the product being anything but completely customer configured, similar to a Tesla. Watches are so person-specific that having a simple, one-size-fits-all band seems impossible.

So much like you can configure a Tesla with a range of 65,000 to 115,000, I'm sure the watch will have a 250 to 2000+ range.
