So check Apple's built-in dictionary and let me know, genius...Apple indeed rules the roost.

MS IS DEAD.

MS is soooo dead, it's only the world's most-used computer OS and a larger company and makes more money than Apple, yet it's near-death. lol

Ooh... "Coca-Cola's Dead!" says the diehard Pepsi drinker. lol

Why is it that after a great numbers announcement Apples stock always takes a tumble. :eek Guidance is good, new products in the pipe.. WHAT the heck?!! Apples stock going down! NOT right. ::mad::mad:

I just do not get it... I have watched this for years and it never fails!

The iPod sales are what are killing the stock after hours.

Also, iPhone sales on matched earnings year-over-year, when adjusted for new reporting.

The only thing that saved them this quarter were the iMac sales. If it wasn't for that increase, we'd be down 10 points right now...

Oh? I didn't know a smaller company could buy a larger company and put it out of business. I guess that means Kia has a good shot of putting BMW out of business then.

Actually smaller companies do buy out larger companies all the time. It's all to do with solid backers, projected growth, profit/share ratio etc. I doubt Apple could ever buy out Microsoft though. It wouldn't be allowed by the regulators for one thing, and inflicting Apple's penchant for screwing the customer to the nth degree wouldn't go down well with Microsoft consumers. They just aren't wealthy enough to bear it. It would be a catastrophe for all concerned.

No. Macs, iPods and iPhones are all computers, not to mention OS X as a system; therefore, Apple is overwhelmingly an IT company.

Practically everything that Sony makes (especially those things that use XMB or Windows) are computers in their own right. Yet Sony is still an electronics company...

Yeah, except I think "product" includes speed bumps while "major new product" (singular) means, well, whatever we see Wednesday..

Products would include speed bumps, but I think we will see a couple major revisions in the near future revolving around video:

New Apple TV with 1080p output and possibly apps
Updated iTunes store with 1080p video and new streaming/subscription options
New 720p iPod/iPhone dock (note the current one uses the old remote)
Current gen iPod touch and iPhone firmware updated to playback 720p video (nothing like a mid cycle sales boost)
Blu ray build to order options on new macs with an accompanying OSX update

This Wednesday will probably be the tablet (obviously) and adding ebooks to the iTunes store (maybe a rebranding?)

Ahhh, how lovely.

I wonder if I could find a "Microsoft records record profits..." and take a gander at all the negatives.

Brilliant post made me lol

They just mentioned the 'unannounced product' in the conference call ^^ didn't say any information just, 'stay tuned'

If Apple's still talking up the device, even with all the rumors, I'm even more excited!

Hahaha, very interesting...an analyst just asked Apple's CFO if the forward guidance includes revenue from "unannounced products"...Peter dodged the question really well, just telling him to "stay tuned"...:D

Wow. This is a Macintosh quarter. The new iMacs are obviously selling very well.

Desktop units were 728,000 in last year's Q1 and 1,234,000 in this quarter- a 70% rise.

Portables were 1,796,000 in last year's Q1 and 2,128,000 this quarter - a 33& rise.

Nice counter, to those saying desktops were on the decline. Apple Pro maybe a little - but it's always been a nich market. iMace has made Mac desktops hold levels well.

I wouldn't say MS is dead, but I would say their growth potential is eroding on several fronts. Not JUST because of Apple, but Apple is certainly on the list of major contributors. The hard thing for MS is that most of the companies on that list have good growth potential, so if they start getting momentum, you could see a snowball effect start to happen.

Who would've thought that, HUH? Now again: WHERE ARE THE GENIUSES that keep on disagreeing with me when I say MS IS DEFUNCT?

Keep it real. Having less market cap than Apple is not the definition of "defunct". By that definition, nearly all companies on this planet were defunct.

MS has still almost 50% more market cap. Long, long way to go. And MS seems to have woken up from a long sleep recently and to get their act together.

Sweet, fresh troll meat to throw on the Ignore grill.

P.S. this is an Apple-oriented site, hence the positive/negative voting. Common sense: give it a try sometime. If you want anti-Apple rage, try just about any other site on the Internet (I recommend the Engadget comments section - you'll find some friends there).

The margin of profit Microsoft makes over Apple probably isn't going to be that great this quarter. We'll see on Thursday.

I'm looking forward to the front page of apple.com changing on Wednesday , its been like that for months

a big shiny tablet to replace the imac!!!!!

MS is like an old man easing into a bathtub.

You know it'll take a while, you know that it might very well end in disaster, and whatever happens, you don't want to stick around to watch it.

Microsoft is certainly not dead, nor close to it, but it's clear their glory days (you know, all those years they squatted over the technology world like Jabba the Hutt) are behind it.

LOL! -100 points for the inevitable visual of Ballmer at bath time. *shudder*

I would certainly hope that eventually iPod sales would suffer due to iPhone sales. Seems only natural.

This just shows how far behind the curve MS is with their current Zune catch-up device.

Once the iPhone is offered by other US carriers it's game over.

You're right. Microsoft is a bit stagnant, despite Windows 7 and not on a hot streak ATM, where as Apple is.

Apple vs. Microsoft profits chart (Wikipedia):

Although the Wikipedia is using 2008 numbers and I'd like to compare it apples to apples (no pun intended) numbers of 2009.

Good analogy, buddy...

I may add MS is like the sick guy in Poe's tale "The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar"...he is dead, but he is still talking... :D
