I would certainly hope that eventually iPod sales would suffer due to iPhone sales. Seems only natural.

This just shows how far behind the curve MS is with their current Zune catch-up device.

Once the iPhone is offered by other US carriers it's game over.

Are you a consumer or a shareholder? If the former, then you must enjoy bending over backwards. If the latter, then well done for trolling this forum.

The margin of profit Microsoft makes over Apple probably isn't going to be that great this quarter. We'll see on Thursday.

ya, but look at apples gross profit of under $15 billion, and look at microsofts gross profit of over $46 billion.

losing a couple % of profit margin is unimportant when your gross profit is over 300% higher.

Microsoft is certainly not dead, nor close to it, but it's clear their glory days (you know, all those years they squatted over the technology world like Jabba the Hutt) are behind it.

LOL! -100 points for the inevitable visual of Ballmer at bath time. *shudder*

So when Apple protects their patents, it's all fine and dandy, but when a non-Apple company does it -- thus allowing Apple to "borrow" from them -- (in this case, Microsoft,) they're acting like an old miser?

 lol And you wonder why some people scoff. You and LTD are MADE for each other in your Apple euphoria, blinders (or tunnel vision or what ever you want to call it) and all.

Apple conference call live:

"tim cook: i don't wan't to take away your joy or surprise from wednesday!!

Good news for Apple but this begs some SERIOUS questions...

With all of these resources why can't they

A) Fix the audio problems on the Mac Pro 2009, which cause the machine to overheat when just playing an mp3?

B) Produce a decent iMac, in any form.

C) Fix their mid 09 MacBook Pros so that you can put in a larger third party drive without rendering the machine unusable?

This means all of their machines (aside from the mini, but who wants that rip job?) have major MAJOR problems...yet they make a killing off all of them. I know I have been affected by 2 of these 3 problems, and they are absolute disasters for me. Majorly affecting how I can work.

I have seen it argued on here that Apple is some benevolent company out to improve the world, but I think it's clear where their priorities lie. Profits, profits and more profits. They aren't making a quality product anymore. A flashy one, yes. And that is why they can make the obscene margins they do, but I can't imagine that they aren't peaking right now and in the next few years will start a downward slide unless they improve the reliability and functionality of their products. Unless of course people keep falling for the top shelf marketing.

Some of you guys don't realize that Apple is just as "evil" if not more so than Microsoft. They are screwing you and you guys are applauding them for it!

No problems with my MacPro.
No problems with any of our iMacs--everyone loves them!
"Evil"?
"Obscene"?
Just a tad overwrought are we? If you actually have product under warranty, take it in and get it fixed.

I know Apple's success (and all the great products that end up in the hands of the consumer) must drive you ******* crazy, but trolling against Apple and its apaprently very satsified customers on the very day Apple breaks records (again), makes you look a little out of touch, if not downright ridiculous.

41% margin..>!!

AAPL clearly has plenty of customers who like getting shafted... they applaud it even..!

Because that's a healthy, sustainable margin. You should worry about a company that goes anywhere south of 25%. (Not to mention other industries have 60%+ margins).

He's a PC...time to head to Windows SuperSite, man.

nope its gouging....

plain and simple.

Not when *new* consumers line up in record numbers to be "gouged" every quarter, despite the availability of lower-cost alternatives (MS and the junkbox makers, al la Laptop Hunters.)

it's called A Better Value Proposition.

Too right. I just had to arrange shipment of an IDS appliance to Sao Paulo. Bloody 120% import duties

This will only go down with tariff-reduction international trade agreements (Doha Round anyone?), and other political measures to reduce the influence and at the same time increase competitiveness of the local industry (there are a lot of electronics companies there benefitting from these "invisible" barriers to entry).

Brazil would also need a LOT of tax simplification measures...as a Brazilian, I must say its complexity and bureaucracy are way higher even than places like the US.

So iPhone sales didn’t meet street predictions.

8.7 vs. 9.1.

Time to open it up to Verizon.

iPhone channel inventory went up from 2.4 million iphones in September quarter to 2.7 million iphones in the christmas quarter.

So Apple really only sold 8.4 million iphones in the christmas quarter.

My 2009 mac pro plays mp3s all day without audible fan noise.

Why are the imacs not decent?

No profit margin is obscene if the customer is happy.
(and the stock holders of which I am one)
Strange how they come out on top in quality surveys when putting out such crap, isn't it?

Best advice:Buy something else!

No. Macs, iPods and iPhones are all computers, not to mention OS X as a system; therefore, Apple is overwhelmingly an IT company.

1)Most electronic devices these days, are, by pure definition, a computer or computer system. To the layman who generally defines "computer" as "personal computer", neither an iPod nor an iPhone is a "computer" to him. And when all the independent analysts summarize "top computer sales" in every imaginable way, you never see an iPod or iPhone on that list. If you have a problem with this, you might want to pick up the phone and call Steve Jobs and express your disappointment.

2)OSX, my friend, is a software application. More accurately, OSX is an Operating System (a subset of "software application").

3)IT stands for Information Technology. While you probably want me to sit here and write forever, you can go look up what an IT company provides for products and services and some examples. Here's a hint: IBM is an IT company. Apple is not an IT company. Sony is not an IT company. EMC would likely consider itself an IT company.

Plain and simple, you're wrong. (Now, of course, services industries are a little different, but you cannot sustain a manufacturing business with less than 20-25% margins).

gross margin....

remember Apple retails a lot of its own stuff.

Wow. This is a Macintosh quarter. The new iMacs are obviously selling very well.

Desktop units were 728,000 in last year's Q1 and 1,234,000 in this quarter- a 70% rise.

Portables were 1,796,000 in last year's Q1 and 2,128,000 this quarter - a 33& rise.

That sharp rise in desktop sales is rather interesting, esp. when you consider the fact that Apple's desktops line (finally) included desktops offering decent performance (quad iMacs, etc.) I hope Apple continues this trend of offering some degree of performance for those who need it. Personally, I have no desire or need for a jumbo iPod touch on steroids.
