Whadayamean? It's what they did last time 'round. iPad 1 3G came out on a Friday at 5PM.

A lot of people do have money for one, time to stand in line a couple hours for it, and enthusiasm to do so. A lot of us who don't are still amused/intrigued by the notion. Nothing wrong with that.

iPad 3G launch was MUCH different than iPad Wifi only launch, I walked right into an Apple Store at 5:30 after work and walked out at 5:40 with my 3G iPad.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

A fool and his TIME are soon parted.

Take WORK for an example. Waste of time, traded for pieces of paper money. That's the irony.

It's fine to pay off someone to wait in line for you. We all do it every day if you think about it.

He's an iPhone developer who can write it off as a marketing expense.

I'm not so sure that you could write off an excessive expense....I believe that you can only write off the fair market value of the item.

It sounds like much, but if you live in NYC maybe you are making $600.00 per hour. So now how do you feel about wasting your time in a line up knowing that you are losing more than the thing is worth just by wasting time in a lineup?

Time is the most valuable thing, not pieces of paper.

If you're making $600 an hour living in NYC, it also costs you way more just to live there.

It doesn't matter how much money I make........I could never justify paying 3x the price of a product just to have it on the first day. I would feel screwed every time I used the thing.

If a friend of mine told me he did that, I would laugh at him no matter how much money he had.

Must be nice to have that kind of disposable income.

Your location says "Barrington, IL"...

It is nice.

I work 50+ a week, lots of late nights, long hours and weekends plus I am required to travel a lot and spend days/weeks away from my family and friends.

So why am I not allowed to enjoy what I worked hard to earn?

So yes, it is nice to have disposable income.

Well, I know of someone in the same boat as you AND the company treats him like crap. He would rather be in yours and his place than in mine, a low paying awesome fun job/company...

To each his/her own...

Cushy. In my line of work, 50 hrs/weekly is considered weak.

Well we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and LICK the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at the mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.

But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

You had a shoebox; luxury!

LOL! Do you even know what "write off" means?

He still has to shell out $1500 and that write off might be worth $250 net off his taxes.

Quoting CNN.

Stop acting like $900 is a lot of money. :D

$900 for free press, and his name and company have been repeated several times. Sounds like a smart guy.

Very smart guy.

Here he is:

Amen to that.

Must be nice to have that kind of disposable income.

You mean for their parents to have that kind of disposable income and give it to the kids.

How silly. Waiting in line when you can have it in a week or two, delivered right to your door.

This.

What I tried to say in a prior post.
$900 "just to be first" makes sense if doing so facilitates making >$1400 in the next few hours. You might not understand the details, but so what? the guy shelling out $900 so he didn't have to wait a couple hours (and not make, say, $1200 as BT notes is not unreasonable), or could already be using it as a tool before the initial lines cleared out, sure thought it made sense.

Just because you don't understand what someone else did doesn't mean that person is an idiot.

^^^Maybe you make that much, but it costs a crapload more to live there as well. It's not like your hypothetical person is making $600/hour in some small town in Iowa.

And I got in line at 5:00 and had mine by 5:30 - ten minutes before you did! :p
