IT'S THE 'S' CYCLE. That's literally the point of this update. Even bringing something to the table like the Xr is surprising at all in a performance cycle.

No that’s the XS. Not the XR which is the topic of his thread...
And he 6S bought 3D Touch FYI.

I never used the iOS 12 beta. Is 3D Touch still working as always in iOS 12 for these phones?

No idea I’ve never used iOS 12

Judging by the hands-on reviews, the screen is as good or better than other LCD iPhones. (I'm getting this from the Verge.) Now granted, I don't know if the reviewer is really saying it's better than the 8 plus, which would surprise me, but I think it can put to rest that it won't look good. This is going to be a nice looking display.

I’m really impressed with this phone. It’s way better than I thought it was going to be. Portrait mode on a single camera phone is impressive.

Only one thing...

I’d say that they’re going to sell a tonne of these but I wonder if $750 is a bit too much. $699 is probably what it should’ve been.

But maybe there’s a load of people that bought the 6s in 2015 for $649-699 and will pay a little extra for a huge upgrade.

I’ll pass though and stick with my 7 for the moment. Roll on 2019!

Someone at the event said on Twitter that Haptic Touch felt just like 3D Touch. So I wonder what the differences are? Can you Haptic Touch on an icon to get shortcuts? Does Haptic Touch work with the keyboard to turn it into a trackpad?

I still do think they’re the same thing. What’s the difference?

I’m really liking the XR. I don’t care about OLED. I don’t object to the price. I love the colours (I want the red one). I’m not seeing what the XS offers that’s worth another third of the price.

But Face ID — can I bear to part with Touch ID?

I had the same touch ID concerns, but for me, it made the interactions with notifications on the lock screen much more fluid.

Is the “All New” “Liquid Retina” display just a fancy way to say LCD? Or is something actually new about this particular display?
If anything it's probably cheaper for them to make? It is pretty high peak brightness which is great, but I don't think you're buying this for an absolutely best LCD display... which is interesting, since Apple has traditionally delivered that. Wonder which smartphone maker will have the nicest LCD tech going forward (clearly Apple is somewhat thinking cost as the pixel density could be higher here).

Has anyone complaining about these displays actually seen them? I care about how something looks not numbers on a spec page.

I really don’t like what Apple has done here. This is not the iPhone 8’s successor. Apple effectively introduced the X last year to increase prices to and above the $1k mark. Since I would guess the majority of sales and financed through either carriers or Apple, they thought to themselves $5 more here or there will not affect sales negatively. This XR just feels too cheap and will go the way of the 5c eventually.

Personally I will keep the 7 Plus until it can’t keep up with the apps I use or 16:9 support is killed off altogether. The XS Max just wont improve my life in any way and I could care less about being seen with the latest phone.
What exactly is cheap about the Xr?

if the Xr had dual lens setup then that would be insanely popular. I really don't want OLED screen but the photography upgrades in the XS look really good and probably the only reason for me to upgrade.
Hmm, looks like I will be spending another year waiting :)

No 3D Touch... no problem.

Most ‘regular’ people that I know (ie who don’t post on personal tech forums/social conversions about the same) haven’t got a clue that 3D Touch even exists.

Do I hear an XR mini???? I look at these new phones and the current ones, compare price points and relative sizes, and see where the recent information that Apple makes more on apps the larger the phone screen size is proven. No more SE-sized phone, unless they release an XR Mini soon. Since the price increases are not linear with the size increases, it costs more comparatively to have less screen-estate, so the XR Mini could cost the same as the XR. I'd still buy it. The dimensions of an SE could have what? A 4.5" screen? I'd live. I have a dog of 6S and I still spent a fortune on apps. I would consider that the XR but the size increase is so much, I think I would hate it, so that leaves me with the option of an Xs? I feel forced into a crappy decision. I think I'll wait a couple of months....

Higher price than expected and lower resolution than expected. It’s definitely disappointing, but that’s the way it is with Apple these days. It will sell well of course because a lot of people will stick with Apple even when their products fall noticeably short. Well, maybe the display looks okay? I have to admit that the colors look nice.
