The only reason I could have seen owning an iPod before was for a dedicated music/podcast player. Now, with all of the fitness additions into the iPhone and connectivity (instant upload/share) I can't see a reason why anyone over the age of 12 would have an iPod touch.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to ditch my cellular plan and just use the iPod since all I really care about is songs and podcasts when I'm riding. But, while biking, it's nice to listen to a mix that I haven't synced on Spotify, or track my rides with MapMyRide, or use GPS in general.

I'm not against it but does it make sense to mount 64-bit CPU on an iPod?

When the real agenda of Apple Music is to relaunch the iPod into the next decade then, IMO, yes. IMO, you will see the iPhone gradually drifting from Music into more productivity driven applications. A 64 bit iPod with the ever increasing number of Wi-Fi Locations could end up being the device of choice for Apple Music. :apple:

I used it to make Skype phone calls in China. It was meant to be a music player and game device in one. I used to use it for mobile app design---I wouldn't touch the current model with a ten-foot finger, it is so slow and dated. It is now a bad music device and a bad game player, the latter needing lots of CPU and GPU oopmh. About time Apple stopped fearing cannibalizing the iPhone and just build the best product they can instead of going out of their way to build crippleware.

How is it a bad music player? Unlike gaming, music does not need 64 bit CPUs and 2 GB or RAM.

by letting people sync offline music from iTunes where you sync the iPods from.

Not happening, those tracks have DRM. Spotify doesn't offer this either with good reason.

Here are the reasons I don't need an iPhone and would much rather stick with an iPod Touch instead:
...
I can agree with you on all points here. I would only point out that, not counting the phone-specific features, there are still a few good reasons (which may not apply to you):
  • iPhones have GPS receivers (mapping is more useful with a cellular connection, but there are apps that don't need one.)
  • iPhones have more horsepower. When the 4th generation iPod Touch came out, it was close (iPhone 4 shipped in June 2010, Touch 4 shipped in September 2010. Both have an 800MHz A4. The iPhone 4 has 512M RAM, the Touch 256M RAM). But when the 5th generation Touch came out, the gap was much wider (Both iPhone 5 and Touch 5 shipped in September 2012. Touch 5 has an 800MHz A5 with 512M RAM. iPhone 5 has a 1.3GHz A6 with 1GB RAM.) I think it is reasonable to assume that the next iPod Touch will not be keeping parity either.

Am I the only one bothered that they switched Safari and Mail on the default home screen? Haha
It's been so long since I've seen a default home screen, I don't think I would realize they changed anything.

Please have bluetooth capabilities...
The iPod Touch has has BlueTooth since the 2nd generation model. The current (7th gen) nano also does. I assume that the new nano and Touch will continue to have this feature.

The only reason I could have seen owning an iPod before was for a dedicated music/podcast player. Now, with all of the fitness additions into the iPhone and connectivity (instant upload/share) I can't see a reason why anyone over the age of 12 would have an iPod touch.
What you're really saying is that you can't imagine any customer having different requirements from yourself. Trust me, there are plenty of people who do.

In my case, I have both an iPhone and an iPod Touch. I use the 4th-gen Touch for playing music and listening to podcasts, so I don't drain my phone's battery when I'm out walking and I don't fill the phone's storage with media (I prefer to use that storage for apps and photos/videos I shoot.) I also use it for those games that can still run on it. It's starting to develop battery issues, so I'll probably get rid of it soon, but I plan on replacing it with a new iPod Touch or a nano because I still don't want to move my music and podcasts onto the phone.

why do people still bother ipod when we having iphone - everything iphone can do that ipod do

My wife has an ancient Nano that stays in her car except when sync'ing new music. She likes that instead of using her phone because there's less fiddling around every time she gets in and out of her car and its easier for her to keep track of her music.

Even if she had a car that would play audio over bluetooth automatically from her phone I'm not sure she'd switch because she likes the click wheel.

I need that gold Shuffle and that gold iPod Touch wallpaper now!

This is a the best I was able to do. Did you take a crack at it?

Update 1 PM Pacific: iPod touch shipping times have slipped to 3-5 business days on the Apple Online Store in the U.S. and Canada.
Tan is going to be a weird substitute for yellow (if they automatically update new orders).

My (completely uniformed) prediction is the shuffle will get 4GB, while the nano will drop to $129.

I was also thinking they might bump the 32GB touch to 64GB. But then that would set a precedent for the next iPhone, so it will be interesting. Nevertheless, a significant performance bump (A7 or better processor and 8MP camera) may be enough even if they don't add storage or lower the prices.

No, but if you install the latest OS, they are sluggish to do anything on, including listen to music (navigation TO music is slow...listening is fine of course).

And unless you want to contribute 1.5 gig to the Install file downloaded to your iOS device, you are forced to upgrade to the latest OS. Also to run the latest apps :)

So what starts off with acceptable performance when it was released, today becomes slow and pokey, because the ipod Touch was given dated tech during the last refresh, it is way behind the curve

Anyways, I guess having the iPod Touch come out before the new iPhone probably means the new iPod Touch won't have Force Touch and Taptic Feedback. Too bad, I was hoping to get the iPod Touch so I could test out those new features without having to buy a new iPhone when I just bought the 6+.
That would be awesome, and would re-invigorate the product line. If they did that people would stop asking what the (hoped for) 64-bit processor is for. Then they could replace the 5S with a 4-inch "6T."

The shuffle is a good product because of the price/size, but they should really want those customers to buy the watch instead.

I gave my 8-year old a shuffle. My 13-year old too. They are cheap, they are attractive. Buy 1, buy many. Lose one? Don't weep--buy another.

Apple Watch: I can't wait for this product to mature. It is a fabulous piece of design and technology that, alas, does absolutely nothing useful for me. And it isn't cheap like a shuffle. Actually, I think the Apple Watch is the most expensive product Apple makes -- because it requires an iPhone. So, they aren't even close to comparable products.

Someday, I can see having an Apple Watch and NO iPhone (the requirement goes away) when it can make phone calls by itself...and can do Facetime on it like Dick Tracey :) (audio alone is NOT Dick Tracey...nope, nope). We are pretty far away from that. That is the product I want. But today's Apple Watch is a stepping stone to it. But they won't get my money for it until the product is FINISHED. This is an absolutely brilliant HOBBY that may mature faster than we think.

Because an iPhone > $700 and an iPod < $200

iPods are mostly used by the younger age group

This price difference is a good point, but it begs the question: why is an iphone6 $650?? A same specced ipad air 2 with lte (same cpu, same flash memory, same camera), with a bigger screen and bigger battery and more ram (meaning higher component costs) is $630?

An iPhone 5S is $550. A same specced ipad mini 4 with lte is $530, but again with a bigger screen and bigger battery, all else being the same.

I think this means the margins on an iphone are WAY higher than on an ipad. I think if Apple chose to go with the same margins on the iphone as they do with an ipad, the iphone6 would start at ~$450.

If current-gen iphones started at $450, and prior gen iphones started at $350, there would be no reason to have an ipod touch.

How do you expect them to use AM if they don't have (big enough) screens?

There is no streaming service for iPods (sans touch).
Good point - these will all be compatible with Apple Music somehow - perhaps allowing subscription music to be listened to for up to 30 days off-line, like Rhapsody has done for years. It would almost be embarrassing if they didn't make them work with AM at this point.

Apple Music should be a big focus of the announcement - good timing to increase interest in the service.

You know what's silly about discussion?

These people whining about "what's the point of an ipod touch when you can get an iPhone" - they wouldn't be saying the same thing if it was called "an iPad Pocket"

Some of just want an iOS-based-tablet-that-fits-into-your-pocket. In fact, the first iOs based tabled was not the iPad 1... iPod touch 1 was the first iOS based tablet.

Completely true. If the iPod Touch had been released before the iPhone, people would still have hailed it as a marvelous device. And then if Apple had later release the same thing but NOW it can make phone calls and by way requires a data plan, they would have gone 'nice to have it all in one, but why does it costs so much more when the Touch does 99% the same stuff for free?"

Releasing the iPhone first and crippling the iPod Touch to make it dramatically underpowered compared to the iphone was a brilliant marketing move on Apple's part, convincing people they all needed to pay $3K over the life of a contract when most of them would have been happy with just a brilliant pocket computer like the iPod Touch. I've used my old iPod Touch as a PHONE...worked pretty darn well! Skype. Didn't cost me a cent to use.

even new ipod cost 199 i still dont want it,

i believe cheapest price 299.99 up to 499.99 depend which model

299.99 i can ipad mini 2 or 3 better,

One reason or maybe Nr.1 reason why the iPods are updated on the 14th of July is, that this date marks the 20 year anniversary of the mp3 standard.

It amazes me how people don't understand why iPod touches are still relevant. I'm old enough now (20) to buy myself an iPhone, but the costs outweighs the benefits for me. I'm almost always within wifi range, and when I go someplace new, I immediately check if they have free wifi where I am. Heck, I'm using free wifi at a hospital waiting room right now (don't worry, everything is ok. ;)). It doesn't make sense for me to get a data plan with an expensive phone ($600+) to use the data once or twice a month.

Either way, whether people get it or not, I've been waiting for a new iPod touch since about 2012, since I'm still using my 4th gen with its broken lock button on iOS 6. I didn't get the 5th gen when it came out because my iPod was still supported with iOS updates at the time. Now, it doesn't make sense to buy a 5th gen because it's outdated at this point, so I'm really hoping the rumors are true.

Give me a 64-bit A chip (I'd prefer an A8 so they don't have to update it again this fall/next year right away?), a better camera, an M motion chip, and preferably a larger screen and Apple Pay support and I'll buy one right away.

Maybe take into account other countries as well, e.g. Germany. In Germany there are not many free wifi and if it is free, it is often slow and/or limited to a certain amount of time. Further, there is the risk of someone logging everything you do while using the wifi.

Im pretty sure they made syncing apple music playlists to these ipods super easy. Imagine just picking in itunes what you want on the ipod shuffle, download and sync and then go out for a run.

Or the just sell the iPod full of music ;). Instead of 1000 CDs you will have just a few iPods in your shelf.

It makes sense for the new iPod Touch to support Apple Pay, which would require a 64-bit CPU, perhaps even an A8. I don't know whether or not the A7 can support Apple Pay.

Don't you need a wifi or gsm connection for apple pay to work?

The volume buttons on my 6 gen nano recently stopped working so I'm in the market for a replacement. What I wouldn't give for that form factor with bluetooth for running...

Just in case you don't know or use headphones without a remote: Any headphones with a apple remote can at least still change the volume, so you could still use it.

Toldja it would be just new colors for Nano and Shuffle with the same prehistoric capacity.

Besides the processor upgrade, Personally, I just want to see the iPod touch get a camera equal to the iPhone. I don't have an iPhone. I have an iPad with an unlimited data plan from att that I'm grandfathered in on. I travel a lot and keep a travel blog. I want to take pictures for my blog, but don't want to buy an iPhone. I do all my texting on my iPad and can make & recieve calls on it too. I would love an iPod touch with a really kick ass camera.

I think apple is marketing the iPod touch all wrong. It's not the shuffle or the nano. It's a cross between an iPad & iphone. So rebrand it. Call it an iPad nano. Give it an amazing camera. It'd be the perfect companion for travel photogs. Heck, give it a SIM card for cellular data just like the iPad. It wouldn't canibalize the iPhone. Cause the iPhone 6plus is already almost as big as the iPad mini for crying out loud! And the iPhone is selling just fine.

I think Apple could really reenergize the iPod touch in a big big way. So many people would want a smaller iPad. Again, call the touch an iPad nano. Offer it in 4.7" or 5.5" sizes. People would still by the iPhone, cause it still can do so much more. But don't cripple the touch anymore. Let it evolve into something new & better.

I'll be seriously bummed if they just update the colors. How unimaginative and un-Apple like.
