I think I may be finding myself reading the tech news sites and Apples website a lot on Tuesday then! I see John Lewis here in the UK has very nearly run out of all iPod Touch models on it's website, if they give the Touch a good update it could be good value.

Besides the processor upgrade, Personally, I just want to see the iPod touch get a camera equal to the iPhone. I don't have an iPhone. I have an iPad with an unlimited data plan from att that I'm grandfathered in on. I travel a lot and keep a travel blog. I want to take pictures for my blog, but don't want to buy an iPhone. I do all my texting on my iPad and can make & recieve calls on it too. I would love an iPod touch with a really kick ass camera.

I think apple is marketing the iPod touch all wrong. It's not the shuffle or the nano. It's a cross between an iPad & iphone. So rebrand it. Call it an iPad nano. Give it an amazing camera. It'd be the perfect companion for travel photogs. Heck, give it a SIM card for cellular data just like the iPad. It wouldn't canibalize the iPhone. Cause the iPhone 6plus is already almost as big as the iPad mini for crying out loud! And the iPhone is selling just fine.

I think Apple could really reenergize the iPod touch in a big big way. So many people would want a smaller iPad. Again, call the touch an iPad nano. Offer it in 4.7" or 5.5" sizes. People would still by the iPhone, cause it still can do so much more. But don't cripple the touch anymore. Let it evolve into something new & better.

I'll be seriously bummed if they just update the colors. How unimaginative and un-Apple like.

Only trouble is, they can't rebrand it as an iPad nano because it would be unable to run iPad-only apps.

Did anyone else pay attention to the Clock app? It could be showing when the planned announcement time is. The app face showed about 9:40, so maybe the announcement will be made at or shortly thereafter 9:40 AM PST? You have to zoom in on the image and stare at the iPod's clock app for a few seconds to see it. Does it sound plausible to anyone else that the time as well as the date could be shown in the image?

The iPhone's and iPods always say 9:41 am as that is the time in the keynote that the original iPhone was revealed. There is no keynote on Tuesday to announce these anyway, they are just getting released.

Plus it's much easier to read the time on the top status bar on the iPod, not the clock app.

Completely true. If the iPod Touch had been released before the iPhone, people would still have hailed it as a marvelous device. And then if Apple had later release the same thing but NOW it can make phone calls and by way requires a data plan, they would have gone 'nice to have it all in one, but why does it costs so much more when the Touch does 99% the same stuff for free?"

Releasing the iPhone first and crippling the iPod Touch to make it dramatically underpowered compared to the iphone was a brilliant marketing move on Apple's part, convincing people they all needed to pay $3K over the life of a contract when most of them would have been happy with just a brilliant pocket computer like the iPod Touch. I've used my old iPod Touch as a PHONE...worked pretty darn well! Skype. Didn't cost me a cent to use.

Huh! 3K over the length of the contract? The extra money you pay on your contract (compared to bringing your own phone) only amount to 15-20%% around here more and not even close to 1K, let alone 3K; even if your talk about the most expensive option, its still only 1/2 3K to get that phone. The service fee you'd pay anyway doesn't count in the cost of your phone. Unless your paying for much much more service than you need to get the phone; in this case I can't really understand doing that. You'd be better financing the phone yourself if that happens.

What you're really saying is that you can't imagine any customer having different requirements from yourself. Trust me, there are plenty of people who do.

In my case, I have both an iPhone and an iPod Touch. I use the 4th-gen Touch for playing music and listening to podcasts, so I don't drain my phone's battery when I'm out walking and I don't fill the phone's storage with media (I prefer to use that storage for apps and photos/videos I shoot.) I also use it for those games that can still run on it. It's starting to develop battery issues, so I'll probably get rid of it soon, but I plan on replacing it with a new iPod Touch or a nano because I still don't want to move my music and podcasts onto the phone.

Eh, to each their own. It seems pretty redundant. 128GB + battery case would pretty much solve that.

It now just says on the website "In Stock", I'm guessing Apple is trying to hide this now?

I think I am in the minority here, but I am thrilled about this. Long overdue. I have iPhone 6, and I absolutely HATE using it for music. I travel quite a bit, and when I forgot my iPod one time, I used my phone - and found that by the time I knew it, my phone died from using it for hours on the plane, and I had no way to charge it soon after I landed, thus I had no phone. I was always one to keep my music separate from my phone. I have both a touch, and a nano - but just want something newer. I'll be getting a new touch for sure.

I surely can't be the only one that hates using my phone for a music player.

No, I hate it, too. I ran into the same problem you did back when I was on the 5s. And I hate having to try and answer a text or get a call when the phone is set up to play music on my Bluetooth speakers. I miss using my old phone as an iPod since I gave it to my kid. I am going to get an iPod of some kind for my music.

No one should get their hopes up too high. We all know how that's gone in the recent past with new Apple products/updates.

Prepare for yet another Apple (under Tim Cook) product disappointment. The iPod will not be the best portable music player by a long shot. Astell&Kern, HiFiMan, and even Sony (as well as others) all make a better player.

Apple, under Tim Cook, is no longer about making the best products, it's about counting beans.

This is great! I'm hoping they bring the iPod Touch all the way up to A8. These CPUs don't cost Apple anything to make these days, and we know now that they won't update it again for another 3 years so let's put a good CPU in this thing so it has some lasting power

I like to dream too, but I suspect they'll go with an A7 given that there isn't even an iPad Mini with an A8 right now.

I think Apple should offer the iPod nano with 32 GB and a slightly updated UI that allows for variable speed scanning like you do on the iPod touch of iPhone running iOS 8.x versions. As for the iPod touch, they need to offer a 128 GB version to make it a true replacement for the iPod classic.

I'm thinking about trading in my iPad Air for either a iPad mini 4 that has a better display/2GB of RAM or a iPod touch if I can get it with a 5.5" display, A8 and 2GB of RAM. I plan to upgrade to a 6s in 3-4 months, but would like to have a smaller "iPad", either a mini or touch, as my "home device" so I won't have to charge my 6s that often. The iPhone 6 Plus has great battery life and I would love to have a iPod touch that was similar in specs to that, plus the extra RAM and GPS (I don't think the fifth-gen iPod touch has GPS).

why do people still bother ipod when we having iphone - everything iphone can do that ipod do

Because an iPhone is more expensive, which is basically and iPod touch with a phone and larger screen, plus the iPhone battery would have less run time, and more services running in the background which are not needed on an iPod. I use an iPod for music as its a completely separate device, and has it's own battery, plus I don't use any Apps on my iPod. Its better to have to separate devices instead of relying on one.

I'm not against it but does it make sense to mount 64-bit CPU on an iPod?

Duh!

Not everyone who buys an iPod Touch has an iPhone - or even wants an iPhone.

With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, practically everything that can be done on an iPad can be done on an iPod Touch. Refer to Apple's iPod site to see for yourself what it can utilize (such as email, iTunes, photos, camera, Safari, maps, weather, Numbers, Pages, FaceTime and more).

I wish this would have been a 4" iPhone instead. You would think it would be trivial to add GSM to those.
I really don't get what the difference between (an updated) $199 16GB iPod touch and a $549 iPhone 5s (off contract)...
You're telling me the cellular/GPS, vibration, larger battery and the better flash (and better camera) is $350 more worth of parts?
I'm sure I left a couple of differences out, but still $350 more...? Plus, the new touch might have newer features than the 5s.

I can buy a separate camera with zoom, GPS and a basic cellular phone that vibrates for less than $350. (All of these have LCD displays and batteries; plus the camera might have a GP and the phone might have a camera, so we've got lots of overlap).

I'm surprised more people don't say this. Because this is PRECISELY the reason why some of us prefer separating phone-use from app-use. Having an iPod touch is perfect for those of us who want to keep phone usage separate.

I use an iPod touch precisely because I'd be a wall-hugging phone user otherwise. I need my phone to always have atleast a battery half-full.

I noticed that the inside circle of the iPod nano home button is the same color as the body. I don't think it has always been like this. I wonder if this is intentional or a graphical glitch...

APPLE WILL NOT BE LAUNCHING THE NEW IPOD TOUCH 6 ON JULY 14,2015. IT MAKES NO SENSE FOR THEM TO LAUNCH A NEW PRODUCT AFTER A 2 1/2 YEARS. IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO LAUNCH ON THE 3 YEAR MARK WHICH IS AROUND SEPTEMBER 2015. THEY WILL ALSO NOT GIVE A OLD OUTDATED SPECS SIMILAR TO IPHONE 5, 5S OR 5C. IT WILL BE SIMILAR TO IPHONE 6 OR 6S. APPLE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE GOOD SALES WITH A INFERIOR OUTDATED SPECS. THEY WILL LAUNCH IT DURING THEIR 4RTH QUARTER TO MAXIMIZE THEIR SALES. ALSO IT WILL COME IN 16GB, 32GB, 64GB. THIS YEARS IPOD TOUCH WILL BE A VERY GOOD PRODUCT AND WILL ALSO BE A HIT ITEM IN THE IPOD TOUCH SERIES

I’m glad the Ipod is being updated. I don’t use my phone for music, I no longer have cds , all my music it’s on my Ipod and a phone wouldn’t be enough to hold all my music. If one day Ipods disappear and I can’t replace mine, what to do then???
