Two reasons, first those windows stickers give the manufacturer a break on windows OS and second the bloatware gives the manufacturer a break on manufacturing.

And OSX is pretty awesome, what other unix environment looks like it?
I'm still on edge if I consider iLife bloatware or not. I believe that's what they're trying to say.

Apple has no qualms pushing .Mac/Mobile Me on you as well several times in the registration process.

iLife is bloatware now? I find it incredibly useful, and not hampered by trial time limits.

I never use it though. Not that I need the 16-20 GB it takes up on my 320 GB drive. If I was still on the stock 120 GB drive my MacBook I'd consider removing everything but iPhoto and iMovie.

Not using something now makes it bloatware?

I don't use internet explorer, yet I don't consider it bloatware.

I haven't encountered a web browser that uses ~12% of my hard drive's capacity and nags me to buy the next version when it comes out.

I checked the box but my point stands.

There are some people who care about specs, and some who don't.

I care. I feel down and very outdated when my Core i PC User friends brag about their machine.

Yet, I can do my work on my Macbook Pro C2D and that is what matters. It works for what I needed it for, and surprise, it does even more than what I need for work. At the end of the day, I'd still make them WoW about Snow Leopard, which they'd never ever get on their PC crap - unless they break some rules. :apple:

What bloatware comes on Windows?

Actually, Windows doesn't come with bloatware... it's the PC manufacturing company that adds bloatware when they ship it. Dell and other companies give the option of not installing any trial-ware or other ancillary software when they ship your computer.

Surely it's a moot point? Regardless of who puts trial / bloatware on the system, the end result for the consumer is the same.

I think the fact is that the practice of filling up a new machine with software that (a) runs out after 30 days, (b) may or may not be of any use whatsoever to the person buying it and (c) can in some circumstances slow the machine down due to additional memory and system process overheads, is more commonplace on Windows machines.

The first thing I used to do after buying a pre-built PC system was to reinstall the operating system.

If memory serves you're told about .Mac/Mobile Me and then again about the discount you get by ordering it right now with your "new" Mac.

You fail so hard.

Because MobileMe advertisements are so hard to remove right? One button 'no' is just terribly difficult.

Of course bloatware is easier to remove. I mean you just have to figure out how to shutdown Mcafee (nearly impossible for a normal user), uninstall it, realize that there are five other Mcafee components, attempt to uninstall those, restart about twice somewhere in between, and now your Mcafee free! Time for the other 26 bloatware software.

I find myself wasting a few hours to get a NIB Windows laptop up and running (using anti-bloatware software, deleting remnants from registry, folder paths, defrag, etc. or just reinstalling Windows if it's able). A new Macbook? Well, everyone here knows how long that takes.

God forbid you tell your clueless family member to buy a Windows laptop. Have fun going over there figuring out which virus they contracted every few weeks.

It's beyond the comprehension of most people. You should see how crammed an inbox can get with mail from Apple. Consider yourself lucky that you're able to comprehend what you're talking about, be on MacRumors, and discuss it.

I consider myself lucky that I know how to unsubscribe from mailing lists and mark messages as junk.

I just had a few people that started complaining to me about Apple spamming their inbox with several messages a day about nearly identical subjects. I told them to unsubscribe and there's a link at the end of each message to do so.

Reading and thinking are just too hard. I've run into other people that have over 10,000 unread messages as well.

I don't think I've gotten 10,000 emails from Apple in the 15 years I've been a Mac user.

What bloatware comes on Windows?

Word. I mean <ahem> ... Word?

I used Word 4.0 (for Mac) about 2 decades back. It was a sweet little app... fast launching (even on a 25 MHz CPU)... small footprint (even on a 80 MB HD). Alas... i never made the move to version 5, or Office after that (praise ClarisWorks). But i'd say —from what i saw the last time i looked —that Word could do with some Jenny Craig.

;)

iLife is not bloatware that is just ridiculous.

The bloatware that comes on most consumer pc's is out of control.

I have always built my own, which solves that problem right there.

Maybe you should go into business for yourself. I'd be hard pressed to believe you would just put your products on a shelf and let the customer decide if they want it or not, your business would greatly fail. You can't blame Apple for pushing their own products, on their own machines. When you buy a new PC you're graced with crap from other companies and it's usually junk software.
Now, if you don't care for iLife, fine, but to act like Apple has some nerve pushing their own a` la carte products as if it's an annoyance to you then your attitude on this matter is displaced.

Comment I heard last night at a restaurant here in town while waiting for a table:

"OSX makes the necessary specs WAY less than what a PC needs. If Apple is "behind", it's by choice and because they don't NEED the same hardware to run OSX as well....a benefit of a better OS"

I was like "Wow...macrumors is infiltrating Macaroni Grill now. hahaha.

I know, but if I'm paying 1K for my laptop, I want MODERN TECHNOLOGY in my laptop. If I can get a dell thats way more powerful than the powerfullest mac book pro, for under 1.5K, then Apple needs to update there hw. I know OSX will do fine on older hardware, but paying $700 more just for OSX and LESS POWERFUL hardware is unacceptable.

What do you think is in current Mac laptops? A hamster in a wheel?

1) Show me a Dell that comes with OS X installed that runs Final Cut, Logic, Aperture etc....Oh wait....
2) Than the most powerful Macbook Pro
3) Apple needs to update their hardware

Steve Jobs was personally notified of your demands and immediately called a top level board meeting. They concluded that, taking into account best ever Mac sales that have improved year on year, along with the recent record high share price, that apparently it is indeed, acceptable.

Sorry.
