I was determined to hold onto my iPhone 6 because of the headphone jack. The phone itself was becoming painfully slow and I wanted a better camera so I begrudgingly got the iPhone 8 Plus (wasn’t ready to let go of Touch ID yet). I love the 8 Plus and I am so happy I decided to go bigger instead of just upgrading to an iPhone 8. The only thing that I hate about it is the removal of the headphone jack. I fly a lot. With my iPhone 6 I could listen to music and charge my device at the same time. Now I have to use a Belkin adaptor to give me two lightening ports for charging and listening. As if that wasn’t enough, I then need to add the lightening to 3.5mm adaptor to use my Bose QC25 headphones. The whole set up looks ridiculous and every time I pull it out, the person sitting next to me on the plane, without fail, comments on how dumb it was to remove the headphone jack. As much as having to do this annoys me, I put up with it because I have no choice. I know I’ll probably get replies telling me to move onto wireless headphones. AirPods seem great but I need noise cancelling for how often I fly and I really can’t afford/justify spending a lot of money on high quality bluetooth headphones right now. So until they are cheaper or I start making more fun money, this is what I will keep doing. I wish Apple would have just left it in. I will complain about it all the time because that is just the nature of my personality but I understand why they did it. I really hope this decision helps push the industry further but in the meantime, this adjustment period completely sucks for me. Not sure why people on MacRumors forums can’t understand where people are coming from on both sides of this issue. The way people debate this is almost similar to the state of political discussions in this country right now.

It’s not like the iPad internal needs to save space and it doesn’t need and probably won’t be waterproof, so what’s the point of removing the headphone jack?!? Not that I use it, but my kids does and a lot of kids do. Forcing people to buy Bluetooth headphone or lighting headphones for no good reason is just stupid. But apple seem to enjoy making stupid decisions these days

Apple's current attitude is, "If you can't afford to buy your kids AirPods every couple of months (because they lose them), then screw you, we don't want you as a customer because you don't fit our profit profile."

People just love getting ripped off. They love it so much you can see them lining up, begging for more each time. I just wish there was a real alternative to MacOS and Windows. I love Linux but it has proven to be just too hard over the years to make it the go-to desktop OS for the masses. Ubuntu came close but actually Android has killed Linux' desktop advancements I think. Oh well.
The primary reasons more people don't use Linux for desktops/laptops these days:

1) Most gamers need Windows, though that is slowly starting to change.
2) Microsoft has a decades old shakehands operation with most PC manufacturers, with Windows being pre-installed and most vendor support being dedicated only to Windows users.
3) When a user first installs and begins using Linux, customary support during initial learning ramp can't be bought or sought out from large companies like Microsoft or Apple.

This necessitates learning to use Google searches and various Linux forums for answers needed. As the initial learning ramp flattens a bit, you'll generally find Linux on modern distro's to be quite elegant to use, and without the licensing costs that come up front for use of Microsoft or Apple system software. Thus far, MacOS is the superior system for high level video/sound applications. That may change as Apple hardware production and support begins to fail for people with those needs. For Linux this becomes a "chicken and the egg" problem: Linux applications and hardware drivers will lag Microsoft (and Apple) until more Linux users lead developers and hardware manufacturers (such as NVidia) to cater to the Linux community; folks won't take the leap to Linux until more applications and hardware support become available. I know from experience that the current Linux desktop is orders of magnitude easier to install and use than even ten years ago.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic from the headphones for iPads topic, but it does address the issue of people leaving Apple as longtime customers who desperately need alternatives.

Next, wireless charging only.

...just as USB charging sockets are becoming commonplace everywhere you go...

If that made it possible to totally seal an iOS device to it was truly "use it in the bath/take underwater photos" waterproof then maybe it would be a big enough step forward to justify the corresponding loss of options/versatility. Maybe... but probably only for the iPhone rather than a tablet that was being pushed as a laptop alternative.

Hmmm, I remember the same angst when Steve removed the floppy drives, 3-1/2" disk and optical drives. No one misses them because the future is wireless and the plug in devices lesson water resistance, gum up over time and are not upgradeable when systems change. Take a look at the first iPod and tell me you would rather have that device (mine is still working BTW) than what we have now. Nope. I do agree with missing Steve but time marches on and so do we ....
Most of the time Apple are not removing them to be futuristic or for any gains other than to make their devices thinner and lighter.

If this idea is adopted in the iPAD there will be no way to use an ethernet cable and listen to whatever is on the internet at the same time... check this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/has-anyone-tried-using-ethernet-on-ipad-pro.1974288/

How about the people who suffer from this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_hypersensitivity

Or simply don't want to be flooded with wireless radiation all the time? Guess health is not a concern if becomes an obstacle to sell more Airpods (and an adapter to do something that should stay there)... this is Apple being Apple, nothing new.

Besides removing this choice from users what is the real benefit for the device itself? Will this allow me to use the iPAD 15 hours (instead of 10) in a single charge? Because if it did then I would be willing to accept this change. Instead it's again another display of megalomania.

What's next? Removing the speakers? Locking the device if I want to go offline? *

* They already showed in iOS 11 to not be willing to disable wi-fi and BT completely (you know what I mean).

If you need such a convoluted setup, then said device is clearly not for you. This reminds me of those silly YouTube videos of people being all tangled up in cables and adaptors when the 2016 MBP was first released. Turns out they were nothing more than click bait, and in reality, you really only need 1-2 adaptors. Showing some exaggerated setup which isn’t indicative of reality may draw a few cheap laughs, but it doesn’t help your case any.

That there is no lightning to Ethernet adaptor tells you what you need to know - most people aren’t using their iPads tethered to optic fibre cables. That’s defeats the entire point!

Completely different situation. The floppy disk was obsolete when Steve removed it. The 3.5mm headphone jack is currently the most mainstream audio input. Apples and oranges.

The optical drive removal was a similar situation as streaming was becoming more popular and broadband speeds had become fast enough to replace it without issue.

Currently though, no wireless headphones can replace the quality of wired ones. That is why people are pissed.

Your looking at this wrong. Most people's hearing cannot distinguish between wired and wireless headphones so Apple sees wired as obsolete. Most Apple customers (at least the demographic they desire) only buy Apple products so they look good. It has nothing to do with technical quality which was, by and large, a Jobs era characteristic.

Apple today is cheapen it up, make it shinny, and make it thin, then reap the profits from advertising about Apple fashion.

Proof of what a bubble these people live in .

Removing the headphone jack HAS been a disaster .

Unlike other brave moves , this is not actual progress . It’s just forcing punters to buy wireless stuff with batteries in , that only last a short time and ultimately on a very short time frame become obsolete.

Also , is it eco friendly ? No it isn’t .

Can Apple stop destroying all I love about their products? I use iPad Pro in bed when gf sleeps and ALWAYS with my headphones (with wires because I don't like to charge every item in my life all the time)
And you can do the same thing with wires by leaving the adapter plugged into your headphones

If Apple really wants to eliminate connection options from its iPad and iPhone, I’d rather see the Lightning connector be replaced by USB-C. But then that cuts into Apple profits.....

RIP headphone jack, I could care less because it's 2018. I am concerned about the face ID only working in portrait orientation. I use my tablet 99.9999999% of the time in landscape mode, especially if the keyboard is attached. Actually I can't remember the last time I used portrait mode. It's going to be VERY annoying to have to place the ipad, keyboard attachment and all, in portrait mode the hundreds of times I open my tablet each day. This is just all around a poor decision if true.

I heard they are going to put the smart connector on the side if it's in portrait mode as well, not sure how this will work with the keyboard.

...

So even if you can work around the lack of a 3.5mm jack, you have to ask what exactly would be gained by removing it that would make the extra constraints and complications worthwhile?

The gain might be to have aniPad with nearly no bezels......

THis is the hilarious thing. People carp on about apple being courageous and doing the right thing by moving the INdustry forward when they are doin the opposite. USB-C should have replaced the 3.5mm port and Lightning. That would have been courage, dumping a proprietary standard for an open one and pushing for universal acceptance of a proper wired replacement for the 3.5mm headphone port.

Wait so now you don’t mind Apple removing the 3.5 mm Jack.

You missed the part where I ask "what is the benefit from this". I just gave you another reason why I don't approve this decision AT ALL.

There's a 25 page thread asking for MOUSE SUPPORT in the iPAD:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mouse-support-the-missing-elephant.2051933/

I don't think this is convoluted, too, despite the fact I see no reason to use a mouse. Still I would never condone the removal of such feature because I am all about giving users more options/freedom, to choose whatever they want to do with their devices.

My gripe with Apple is that every year they remove more and more options from their products and everything else related, like the App Store in iTunes which allowed users to save the .IPA files/backup their apps. There was no reason for this change! It was just another display of megalomania.

I'll ask again: will this reduce the cost from all these devices (or their size) so much that can be justified?

NO!

Since the answer is a big NO then let it there.

If the only reason Apple is removing is because they think wireless is the future then it's time to leave them for good.

There are health implications in going wireless and flooding yourself with EMF radiation all the time.

I used the Airpods for almost a year and they never had the promised 5 hours in a single charge. And what if I want to use a wired headphone for a variety of good reasons, including "the one I have is better than the Airpods"?

You'll say: use the adapter! Wooooooooow, then why remove the headphone jack in the 1st place if you are going to sell an adapter? Does that make any sense to you? :)

As I've noticed about a lot of these posts, it's the model, "I don't need the headphone jack, who cares if others do?" Interesting tangent for some of these models is this one: "I use my iPad in landscape mode most of the time, so this preference for portrait mode is a poor decision." So it's a great decision if you aren't inconvenienced, it's a poor decision if you are. It's all about what You need or don't need. What the wired folks are saying, in contrast, is "we need whatever port or jack that you don't need, but are fine that you don't; cool, keep the ports and keep bluetooth - we're all happy." The "this is the future" would hold water except this Isn't the future, it is the reality of now with a significant plurality of longtime Apple customers.

In the end there should be no ports, the future is portless. The only reason to use 3.5mm today is the fact that the airline industry still have their backwards rules about wireless headphones and such, but I guess even those people will have to catch up to science at some point.

but isnt it much easier and more functional not to use it if you dont need than not having it at all?

i have ipp and a pencil, then i have wired sennheiser headphones... i wonder, if i need to charge my pencil, to where i plug the headphones then? and more common case, to where i plug the headphones when i need to charge the ipad?
Charge your pencil while you go to the bathroom. (15 seconds = 30 minutes)

Charge your iPad while you sleep. :)

Oh, that is bad. If this is correct, this is an Awful mistake by Apple. I sure hope they do not make Face ID only work in portrait mode.

And, as far as the AirPods ... I was totally against them, then my Beats broke, I bought Bose, and accidentally put the through the washer... so, I tried the AirPods ...

I have to say... they are really awesome. Use them when running with no problems. Love the tapping feature and the fact that they auto-pause when pulled from the ear.

They look ridiculous. They work great.
if I had the funds, I would get a pair of the colored versions out there that are a bit more subtle.

Steve is dead.

And Steve's likes and dislikes can and would've changed - especially if said change was forced by a competitor.

Yes, well said. People who say "Steve would never have done this" and "This would never happened under Steve Jobs" are basically living in a time capsule. If Steve Jobs was incapable of changing his opinions and decisions over time, reacting to the real world and technological change and new information, then he would have been a failure in business. So nobody has the first clue what Steve Jobs would have done in 2018. And they forget this is the guy who decided to remove many features from Apple products in the past, from DVD and floppy drives to all kinds of legacy ports. He was a ruthless killer of features which he determined to be legacy, and tended to kill them before the rest of the industry, leading to the same kind of complaining we have seen around the removal of the legacy headphone jack. His track record was pretty good, too, but he wasn't perfect. He thought 'web apps' were the iPhone's future, and he launched the first iPhone with a recessed headphone jack which was not compatible with 99.9% of headphones unless you used an Apple dongle (sound familiar?). But still, these imbeciles persist in raising Steve's ghost as a way to give legitimacy to their arguments. It's almost religious, like the way that people with zealous beliefs justify their opinion by saying "well God said so." God isn't here, so it's an easy and cheap way to 'finish' the argument. 'God' would have agreed with you. Steve would have agreed with you. Hey, he's not here to contradict that, so you win right? Except that, just like supernatural deities, this version of Steve Jobs only exists inside your head.

I still think Face ID working only in vertical is wrong though. It will definitely have to support both orientations if it is going to work properly on the iPad, which can be used in either setting.
Here'e the other problem with Face ID on the iPad...even if they did make it work in both orientations, there are many people who are left handed and hold the iPad in the horizontal position with the home button on the left side. This would make the Face ID on the bottom of the iPad in horizontal. I just don't see how they are going to make this work on iPads.

Negative. I teach quite a bit in various locations, and must carry an assortment of adapters to ensure I can connect to whatever media devices the host has. I frequently need VGA to projector and 3.5mm to get audio out as hdmi is not always available. There are endless needs for various connectivity issues and eliminating hardware features merely complicates connectivity for the user.
