First - smartest move by Apple - stay away from this mess. Some of you have a very short term memory.

Second - why the f--- doesn't SAMSUNG step up and run it? This hole situation reeks of Android level s---!

Third - so glad YouTube and Google are jumping in head first :)

Fourth - when I saw this trailer I was like "who put this story into production" ... I could think of $65 million reasons for better ideas to get made than this one... C'mon Hollywood...

They are now going to release "The Interview" at 1pm Eastern today on Microsoft, Google, a dedicated website, limited theatrical release on Christmas, and more. Looks like Netflix may say yes where Apple said no. You Tube is in also.

Unprecidented first release to stream and download. $5.99 to rent.

The trailer is on imdb.com

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 44%. Google "see the interview" for local showtimes.

Christmas Vacation?

It takes work to get a movie on iTunes and Apple pretty much shuts down this time of the year. I wonder if it's a simple as that. If it weren't for the Christmas break, perhaps they would do it?

Looks like GooglePlay and Youtube will have the movie. I'd say Apple let this one slip through their fingers.

Everyone keeps framing this as whether Sony or theatres are cowards for not standing up to North Korea.

How about remembering all the chaos and death caused by the USA and CIA in assassinating heads of state and installing their own dictators, in South and Central America and the Middle East. How about taking a stand against glamorising these murders and atrocities?

Sure, North Korea isn't the same as all the democracies or moderate dictatorships that the USA has toppled, installing brutally repressive regimes. But this is likely their way of drumming up support for those kinds of actions. That's why I don't believe in paying money to see all these Hollywood WW2 movies, as I believe that's really just another way of drumming up support for war in general, and these current wars indirectly.

To me, the truly principled position is to reject war and murder propaganda. We live in free societies, so I believe these types of movies should be free to be shown, but I for one will not go see them.

Sad. This looks more a case of Sony looking to hit all the major distribution channels but Apple bottled it. Probably more interested in Chinese sales than artistic freedom of expression.

A shame apple rejected this. Another company who are running scares.

The test showings were very positive - already a good movie.

I'm looking forward to watching this, just not in iTunes.

Whether one actually wants to see this movie or not, it's another example of Apple deciding FOR US what we want.

Yay Apple, thanks for letting your competitors have content that you don't have. That's a brilliant marketing move.

Apple did the right thing to not risk their networks during the Christmas season.

I notice non of you apple haters haven't mentioned the biggest streamer of movies "netflix" is also not showing it? Also notice the other company with the most to loose over Christmas Amazon has elected not to stream it.

Remember google is censored anyway in China?

And at the rate android users upgrade their operating system and pay for apps nobody will notice if googles network is down for a few months

Huh? Clueless response. Apple's network is always at risk, and wtf are you talking about with google's network?

In other news, you are a great target for hackers because they know you cower in fear from them.

I'm surprised this article isn't in the political discussion section.

I'm not surprised Apple didn't want to get involved in this controversy. From what I've heard the film is ho-hum, this is the best thing that could have happened to it. When is the Taliban comedy coming out Hollywood?

Good let them have it. Shouldn't people be spending time with family and friends on Christmas and not glued to a TV or mobile device watching a stupid movie?

I'm a bit disappointed. I was planning on renting it from iTunes.

I'm sure you'll eventually be able to rent it on iTunes just not on Christmas Day. I don't see what the big deal is.

I think this is mostly about the fact any streaming service will be in the line of fire of hackers if they are to host the film. Although I'm sure Apple have second to none security on their servers and networks, they have a huge amount of users. I don't imagine putting all those users at risk for one film is in their interests.

The film should be shown at select cinemas on select dates with heightened security until all of this blows over. North Korea like to show their teeth every now and then, but ultimately it leads to nothing. I get the impression they don't have much to threaten the world with. But now we're getting into politics.

I'm quite intrigued to see this film now, purely because I think it looks pretty funny. I'm also sure Sony aren't overly displeased with the publicity this film now has. If they manage to get it streamed/shown somewhere, I imagine the demand will be enormous.

Merry Christmas to everyone here on MacRumors! I imagine Santa will be bringing millions some lovely new Apple gear this year. The annual 'New to the App Store?' sign has appeared on the App Store in preparation for all those brand new activations and users! :apple:

Yeah and if Apple gets hacked or its services go down because everyone and their brother are trying to access this stupid movie then what?

If it's so important to show this movie on Christmas day then why doesn't the U.S. government set up a secure website where people can watch it?

Then it's be just like any other launch day at Apple...servers running at a crawl and people unable to get their new software. Ever try doing anything at the itunes store or app store on Christmas day?
