Yeah, my k800i from early 2006 still kicks my 3GS's ass in taking photos. If you're just going to ignore a blindingly obvious example of how Apple stagnates when there is not pressure, then I can't help you.

My partner and I went into London on a cloudless summer day and took the same pictures, Westminster Abbey, the soldiers on horses outside the palace in Whitehall, Nelson's Column, Big Ben, the lions in the fountains in Trafalgar Square, we then got our mutual friend a highly respected motorsport photographer who travels the world to photograph races to judge the images and give his opinion on what was the best camera and he overwhelmingly decided on the iPhone 4 images.

Doesnt matter. Tablets were invented long before Jobs started working on the ipad. Time to face the music.

Hmm, how come that almost every relevant tablet now looks like the one Jobs 'invented' and not like some others that existet before it?

Well of course. Apple's own Newton Messagepads were early "tablets" given their size and functionality.

Apple & Jobs at least "reinvented" the tablet last year though.

Because Apple made it more successfully thanks to more mature tech. That's been covered over and over now. It's still not inventing though.

Samsung pulled there tablets from the expo not because they were forced to do so but for the free publicity. Every journalist on the expo probable already saw the device and all tech-sites already had a written statement concerning the device. Now there is a second report that even reaches non-tech oriented sites/sources.

Yap, contradicting almost every review about the Nokia and iPhone cameras

Point I am making is Apple do not have to have ultra high specs to sell well, if Apple got a dog turd off the street and stuck an Apple logo on it and marketed it as the iTurd people would be queueing up in the street all night to have their very own Apple dog turd so Apple could very easily stagnate and would still retain 95% of their fanbase so the fact that they are still pushing the envelope out with things like Facetime, retina display, tablet computers etc when they don't need to shows that they do care about the fanbase.

But they do need to, that's what you don't seem to grasp. If they sold an iPhone 4 with the same old 3GS display and a crappy processor, who would buy it? I doubt it would be a hit. There would be a few people who would get it just because it's Apple, but not enough to class it as a success.

Specs are not everything, user experience and the feel of a product are just as if not more important.

I have an iPhone 4 with 5mp camera, my partner had a Nokia N8 with 12mp camera and particularly with macro images like flowers and insects and in sunny conditions the 5mp camera on my iPhone 4 tears the 12mp Nokia a new ******* so the iPhone doesn't need to fight specs wars, they are nothing but cheap headlines, Apple's user experience, the way you flick through screens, the way you pinch images, the way app loads is superior to any phone on the market so even if some Apple products aren't a massive leap specs wise they don't need to be.

You do know that the camera that the packs N8 is quite unanimously considered to be best mobile camera ever? (somehow, SE Arc managed to win the last award in the US though).

From the top of my head the i4 camera has white-balance and color reproduction issues (yellow, most notably).

Second, i see no difference in how ios flicks, pinch or loads apps compared to the high end devices others are shipping. I really dont.

(But yes, Apple is making good use of its hardware. Thats the benefit of making just one device. Good optimization possibilities).

Apple is a brand, even borderline a religious cult, people own a lot of things because it is Apple and no other reason, Apple has a coolness and a feeling of prosperity that no other brand has that is why it is so popular.

The 2nd best selling phone in America this year has been the iPhone 3GS, a 2 year old spec phone outselling the latest state of the art offerings from HTC, Blackberry, Sony, Samsung etc, if people were that bothered by out and out specs the GalaxyII would be at the top by a street but it is being out sold by a 2 year old phone so i think that people are less stats conscious than you think.

Apple is a cult/lifestyle not just a tech company

That's because its cost almost nothing. Put the 3GS up at the same price as the Galaxy S2 and see what people pick.

The Apple would still win because of the fact that it is Apple
Owning an Apple and showing it in public is a status symbol, bit like flashing an American Express platinum card about or driving a Ferrari, it holds the same level of status and feeling of wealth and superiority so I have no doubt at all that the Apple would triumph if it was the same price as the GalaxyII because owning a Samsung does not have that feeling of status and people are very status conscious.

Many of them looked like "the ipad" did before the ipad, and many of them still today looks like the non-ipad looking did before. As for why? Because form usually follows function. We have been over this so many times by now. Dont start once more. Just accept that you really dont know what youre talking about.

No, I'm pretty sure most people would take the Galaxy S2 over a 2 year old phone. Status is no good if the thing you're showing off is horribly outdated.

Spoken like a true elitist snob.
You must have real insecurity issues if you feel the need to be a walking billboard to gain the approval of others.

I don't but a lot of people do

I am very discreet with my iPhone4 and iPad2 in public but I see a lot of people flashing them around in public

I wasn't convinced but now I am, you must be paid by Samsung or Google to make look Apple fans dumb.

Because Apple made it more successfully thanks to more mature tech. That's been covered over and over now. It's still not inventing though.

It's not that simple. Tech is only one of the factors, an enabler. What you design with that tech is a form of invention.

Heh, I see that in every single non-iOS device I pick up (however, I have never seen a Windows Phone 7 phone in person, I hear that's just as smooth if not more so). It's the first thing I check to see if Android has caught up to iOS' interface smoothness. The last device I tried was a Galaxy Tab 10.1. Certainly much smoother than my original Droid, but not up to the iPad 2's frame rate or responsiveness.

Yup, and had they designed something that had never existed in any shape or form before, they would have invented it.

At this point I actually WANT Samsung to come out with a kickass product just before the iPad 3 is announced, and can then get it shut down for copying them. Apple are taking the piss here and need to be put in their place. I say this as an Apple fan too. I've never owned a Samsung phone/computer/tablet/etc.

Apple: Grow the f--- up and stop being so 'Microsoftish'.

It still wouldn't sell even close to the iPad3 no matter how "kick ass" the product was in specs, people are buying Apple products because it is Apple.

2 products were launched in the UK on the same day in March, iPad 2 and Nintendo 3DS

Queues a mile long were reported for the iPad 2 outside the Regent St Apple Store, the 3DS was launched with barely a whimper.

5 months later the 3DS was being heavily price cut because of lack of interest yet despite a deep economic crisis in the UK you couldn't get an iPad 2 above 16gb without incredible effort, even in August the John Lewis website would sell iPad2 stock in seconds.

The £200 3DS was destroyed by the £659 iPad 2 in a deep recession

I'm afraid CWT1965 might agree.

OK, now yo got me - is that from Orwell's "1984"?

(I read it so many years ago - and I can barely remember yesterday:p)

Actually, it's from Ridley Scott's 1984, and after reading CWT1965's posts, I believe that's where he would like to see Apple headed.
