You should be careful until someone has testet it.

Parallels only supports Windows for ARM and it isn't officially supported by Microsoft. There is also no simple way of buying a license for Windows for ARM. You have be part of the Insider program (or something) and download it from through that program.

I like techie things and booting Linux on old Android devices. I think it’s a fun hobby.

But you start to get the feeling that Apple has a monopoly. So I side with Microsoft on this issue.

That said, mathematically, the notch is pixel perfect and gives the MBP 2021 a distinct Apple look.

All I hear from Apple is excuses. How can Dell do this? Of course if I was gonna get a new computer right now it would most likely be an iMac. These MacBook pros are way overpriced.

Dell isn't really doing it considering it has a rather low-performance 720P webcam? The sensor on the MacBook Pro seems to be quite a bit larger? Apple could obviously opt for using the lower quality 720P webcam and achieve the same as Dell but it seems like they are focusing on upping the camera quality these days.

The problem with that is where would they put the front. Am, dot projector for Face ID, and all of that stuff? That’s what the notch hides.
Well, the entire point of this discussion is that a notch hides nothing. It augments that there is something that should not be at this position.

This argument comes from a company that takes up home much space at the bottom of the screen with their dock?

It's not so much having the notch and weather it's needed or not, it's the look of it! It just looks odd.. it's slowly growing on me, but for a laptop siting from 2 grand it really should look nice and not have permanent distractions on the home screen.

Magnetic connection on the top of the lid with pins that connect it. Would of much rather of seen this and no physical camera on the display at all.

Then people would complain about having to buy a camer, its price, and the ugly pins on the top of the case.

Question for the notch haters: would you have preferred if Apple had bumped out the top edge of the lid to accommodate the camera?
Trouble is it would then be called the WartBook Pro instead of NotchBook Pro

Exactly.

Already a solved problem, application menus always take precedent over menu utilities.

It will no doubt work similar to bartender - whatever menu is appropriate for the task appears and teh other gives up screen space.

Was it too 'Samsung' or 'Google' to just use a hole punch or droplet notch? Apple always has to make a aesthetic statements by sticking to their own conventions.

That would have created a rather large dead spot on the screen for the camera and other sensors, which is a very bad design decision.

But in all honesty, Apple should bring back the keyboard mouse nub.

The nub was nice but it lacks all the capabilities of the Mac's touchpad so it't simply be a pointing device.

Is it controversial? Given that I can’t run macOS Monterey on Windows 11. Can I?

A notched MacBook Pro can run Windows 11 and macOS. Plus Android, iOS, and Linux.

A notchless Dell can run Windows 11, Android and Linux.

Or am I mistaken and the M1 macs are somehow limited by the M1 architecture?

Let’s not forget when Steve Jobs forced that horrible U2 album in all of our iPhones…I’ll never forgive him for that. This is the problem with Apple…they think they know what’s “best” for us professional users.

Just like Apple forces Garage Band, Pages, Numbers, etc. on use. It was free and easily deleted, yet people bitched about Apple forcing them to take a freebie.

My 2019 16" Macbook Pro screen within the Photoshop (Czech). So where exactly is that extra space for notch?

The application Icons will simply dissappear as needed if designed properly.

It does? Well at least that’s good news but literally makes the whole space unusable unless you want to deal with the notch and menus bar. Can always turn it black but that still has all that unused space for nothing.

It was completely unusable under teh old design. Turning it black makes it like the old design.

Apple could obviously opt for using the lower quality 720P webcam and achieve the same as Dell but it seems like they are focusing on upping the camera quality these days.

Exactly. Apple made having a separate webcam unnecessary for many users with a top notch one built in.

Apple does have a good point here. Especially if it was designed by Jony Ive’s. The notch was able to introduce a bigger screen factor on an iPhone X too comparing with iPhone 8 Pro Max.

It only took Apple 4 years to admit a NOTCH is necessary for a bigger screen.

Years later same concept is being assigned to the MacBook Pro line up.

The fact Apple is so proud of the notch is just amazing! Impressed by the creativity at Apple.

Shame they didn’t make any use of the massive chin. They deleted the tacky MacBook Pro text but just left it blank. Why not also grow the display down? Or did I just leak the plans for MBP2023?
Notch gate here we come

Not just Photoshop, but Capture One, MS Edge, Guitar Pro and many more all have menu options that go well beyond the midway point.

I'd like to know how this is handled too. Perhaps these apps will only be allowed to run in fullscreen mode, or they'll put a '...' menu option to the left of the notch!?

I don’t think so. We just understand why it’s there.
Same with butterfly keyboards and "portless" Macs? No USB-C for iPhones but for iPads? The Touchbar? Awesome new Safari Tab concept?

Lots of people were crying out, telling everyone that Apple is right and Apple cannot fail - until ... Well, until all this stuff is gone and Apple admits to have failed.

The notch on the newly redesigned MacBook Pro offers a "smart way" to give users more room for their content and allowed Apple to make the bezels thinner and provide more screen real estate to customers, an Apple official has said during a recent media interview.

The inclusion of a notch on the entirely revamped MacBook Pros was a surprise and was one of the few last-minute rumors that surfaced ahead of Apple's "Unleashed" event last week. As expected, some social media users have criticized Apple's design choice of adding a notch to the display.

Addressing the company's decision, Shruti Haldea, a manager for the Mac product line and one of the presenters of last week's Apple event, said during an interview on the Same Brain podcast that the notch is a "smart" solution for the Mac as it provides users more room for their content by moving the macOS menu bar out of the way.

Compared to previous iterations of the MacBook Pro design, the new 14-inch and 16-inch models do feature significantly smaller bezels. Apple says the bezels are 24% thinner than the previous generation on the left and right sides of the display, measuring only 3.5mm. On the top, thanks to the notch, the bezel is 60% thinner, also measuring at 3.5mm.

While the notch is noticeable at first, Apple is betting on some macOS software features, including dark mode, to help minimize how noticeable it is to some users in day-to-day use. For example, when macOS apps are in full-screen mode, the system adds a black border to the top of the display, hiding the notch while not interfering with a user's content. Developers can choose to have their app's content shown on either side of the notch.

The notch is one many changes to the new MacBook Pros. The new laptops feature an entirely redesigned chassis, additional ports such as HDMI and an SD card slot, MagSafe, a mini-LED display with ProMotion, and either the M1 Pro or M1 Max chips, which are the first Apple silicon chips designed for professional consumers.

Both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models became available for pre-order last week and will start arriving to customers on Tuesday, October 26. Both sizes can be configured with either the M1 Pro or M1 Max chips, giving users substantial performance gains compared to the M1 Apple silicon chip. What no one seems to be realising here is that this is a laptop for 'Professionals' and pro Software have a LOT of menu bar items that almost always overlap existing menu bar shortcuts (reference Architecture software), Cinema 4D will survive this because they run their menu items below the menu bar, guess every other pro software will have to do this now, thanks for this innovation Apple! Also, professionals NEED several menu bar apps to speed up work, this was already made worse my Big sur increasing the space between menu bar app shortcuts. IMHO A bunch of pro wannabes are designing apple pro machines since the trash can. All this power is useless if I'm constantly reminded that I'm using a computer instead of focusing on my creation.

The notch is not for a future Face ID. That may not ever come to a MacBook because it’s not as useful in a laptop.

The notch is for a similar tech tho, one that will detect hand gestures and other controls. Apple already has tons of patents for this, all related to AR ambitions.

Maybe.... only that those sensors would be very similar to the ones used for FaceID and removing the TouchID button would save a few $.

If you're buying the new MacNotch Pro you'll need Bartender 4 at least to hide the icons on the right in a dropdown menu. I'd assume some of Photoshop's menu will be displayed after the notch. It'll take some eye gymnastics to adapt to it.

Basically, Notchgate is an argument between two options:

1. No notch, but larger bezels and hence, a much smaller screen.
2. Notch, but tiny bezels and a much bigger screen.

It blows my mind that anyone would choose option 1.
