Awesome, thanks, now I can get my Dad's iPad on it. BTW, does using a device for development slow the app quit due to it saving data etc

Not wise to put beta builds on live devices with real data. Performance and stability will vary. You do that, you're rolling the dice.

hotspot Feature on 3GS, only name changed

just updated my 3GS to the New beta to see the new hotspot feature in action ... bummer, no WIFI option - just USB and Bluetooth, as it was with the previous tethering feature. http://www.flickr.com/photos/taxflickr/5349972631/

looks like I'll have to stick to my Huawei modem to go online with my (wifi only-)iPad on the road (T-Mobile in Austria doesn't restrict the tethering feature without extra charging for it ... )

It makes no sense whatsoever for AT&T's charging for tethering nor hotspot functionality. If you pay for the data, you should be able to use it how you wish... it costs AT&T nothing (unless the true unlimited users are abusing their plans).

You're trying to tell a company that charges the equivalent of $1,300/megabyte for SMS's (also data) that it makes no sense to charge money for tethering or hotspot... It makes perfect sense if you have no competition and want to leech as much money out of the customers as possible... Maybe it'll change with Verizon. Maybe not...

No. I've tried restoring with and without a back-up and it's just not showing up. I can't imagine why it wouldn't be there. Maybe it's accidentally only on the 3G models.

Gestures

I love the idea of gestures in iOS. 4 finger swipe left/right to switch apps and 4 finger swipe up to reveal multitasking bar are how Apple should have implemented multitasking from the get-go. Multiple presses of the Home button isn't intuitive.

That brings me to the 4 finger pinch for home screen. Not only is this not intuitive, but it's carpal tunnel syndrome inducing! I play piano and have to deal with weird finger placements, yet this 4 finger pinching maneuver does not feel natural at all.

I propose: 4 finger swipe down to reveal the home page. Make it inertial so that you can reveal the home page below the current app as if you're manipulating a real object. You can let go to have your app spring back into place or fling it down to reveal your homepage.

Don't know what it was in the 20 apps, but they were a mix of GPS, streaming apps, and games. Hasn't happened since. Was it apps? Was it something else? Don't know. My suspicion is that one of the streaming apps might lock it in an "awake" state, even though it's not streaming anything (and the OS is supposed to sleep it in that case). Maybe if it 'crashes' or hits some error state.

Ding ding ding! GPS sucks down the battery.

I sure hope this means Hotspot will replace tethering and allow us to connect our iPads to our iPhones this way! Maybe Apple has finally sold enough 3G iPads that they don't worry about it.

Can you airplay videos from the camera roll???

Just tested it...it finally works!

AWESOME!!! Thanks!!!

I have a Wifi only iPad and no multitouch gestures settings is available. I think they only enabled it on the 3G iPads

Cant wait until the jailbreak community enables hotspot without a formal AT&T plan like they did with tether on AT&T!

Consequently, it appears that Apple will no longer be supporting the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch with operating system updates.
Disappointing since it seems like 4.2 took the 3G back to nearly 4.0-level unusable performance. Tap on something and wait 30 seconds is not acceptable.

Is there something one haas to turn on in order for the new gestures to work? I can't for the life of me get them to function. It behaves as though I only have two fingers touching it no matter what I do. I can't seem to find anything in the documentation.

snip

1. Start XCode, go to the Organizer and click "Use Device For Development" button for your iPad and then sign in with your PAID developer ID.
2. Quit Settings.app from multitasking
3. Open Settings.app

Did you try this? Should probably be noted in the opening post.

Update on Gestures
Just to update for those that aren't getting the gestures. I forgot that I had installed a new hard drive and reinstalled Xcode so if after I went into Organizer and clicked "Use for Development" the gestures appeared.
