But does it no longer crash safari and finder every 10 minutes?
Geez! You must have other issues ongoing... or else you're telling porkies. ;)

Frankly, I expected at least some issues since upgrading form 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard on Saturday. (For anyone having doubts, upgrade was a problem-free process). The only quirk I've had so far is that an email I moved to my draft folder disappeared. Otherwise 10.6.2 seems very stable &, IMO, is well worth having.

Some people say that refurbs are even better because they've been through more stringent quality checks...is this true? Can I recommend this route to my soon-to-be switcher friend?

I'd certainly recommend it, but as another poster states, your friend might find trifling imperfections like a few dodgy pixels. I have about 4, which can only be seen if you thoroughly search for them. Otherwise my iMac was perfect, 22 months later works impeccably & I wouldn't hesitate to buy refurb from Apple again. BTW, my iMac was reduced by £220.

Another small point, my refurb Mac arrived well-packaged but in a plain brown box, not the standard one that comes with new Macs.

You're not alone, I have constant crashes as well. The solution is to Save everything you're working on every 2-5 seconds, I've gotten used to it now and I never lose an entire document anymore! When there's just a minor Kernel Panic, rebooting doesn't take long, and I've set all my applications that I use to launch at startup automatically, so all I need to do is hold the power button for 6 seconds, reboot, and I'm back almost exactly where I was in a matter of minutes! If you do the math, that only adds up to less than 20 minutes of downtime per week, which is quite good! I didn't buy a £1300 computer expecting it to be stable anyway!

What do you think is it possible that Photoshop crashes because it's fault not OS X? There are a lot of combinations that can get app to crash.

Anyone know what the iChat fix(es) might be? My iChat no longer connects to AIM since this past weekend, curiously coinciding with my install of Safari 4.0.5. Has anyone else seen this?

I have had issues with iChat connecting to AIM servers for roughly the last month, but part of me suspects this is not the iChat client itself because it was totally fine prior to that.

I really have been totally issue-free with 10.6.2. When 10.6.3 comes out, I'll update, but until then, I'm good.

I'm not talking about Photoshop, but rather the whole OS. It crashes constantly, no matter what program I'm using, even when I'm not using anything. Sometimes even the screen saver crashes it. By crashing I mean total unrecoverable freeze, kernel panic, or spontaneous reboot. Leopard was stable as hell, that's why I trusted Snow Leopard. I will downgrade back to Leopard, but I'm in too many projects and I can't afford to do that now.

What Mac are you using?

When this started happening on my MBP it turns out the Nvidia issue had finally showed itself. I took my machine to the Apple store and they swapped out the motherboard. No problems since.

It won't hurt to try Leopard on it again to make sure, but what you're describing sounds like a hardware problem and your upgrade to SL may have just been a coincidence.

I did bring it to the Apple store to get ti checked by a genius but he didn't know what it could be and said that the could take the machine in for extensive testing, but then I would be without a computer for days, I can't do that now. It's a late 2008 15 inch Unibody MacBook Pro. I'm out of warranty so if it's really a hardware issue I won't be able to get it fixed.

I hear you. Having spent hours trawling message boards and tech-sites, I have undertaken numerous "fixes" ranging from resetting PRAM / SMC to a full reinstallation of Snow Leopard. However, I'm now convinced that this has nothing to do with software, peripherals, Mac model or hardware. I think it's a power management system problem that needs to be fixed by Apple: I went through all of the System Preference panes and unlocked them all. It is now well over a month, and I haven't had any random restarts.

The machine has gone through all the hardware checks it could (even very low level checks) and reported no issues at all. I just reinstalled SL + 10.6.2 and a copy of Windows XP Professional in a Boot Camp partition (which has NEVER crashed yet) and I'll wait for Apple to release 10.6.3.

So what kernel panic do you get? I mean after this much problems, you should know. Right?

I have 2007 SR MBP and it's been out of warranty for years (never bought Applecare) and they have fixed the Nvidia thing and then a bulging battery for free. Even out of warranty there are certain things that Apple will cover because they are some sort of known issue.

If it's crashing as often as you say it would seem that you can't work on it anyways, so going without a computer for a couple days wouldn't be the end of the world.

+1.
I upgraded from Leopard to SL with the last developer seed before 10.6 went GM. Although I received the ordered DVD in September, I did not bother to reinstall. SL has been on my mid-2009 UMBP for half a year without any major issues. I have been running with the 64-bit kernel and doing development work with GCC & VI (No fancy GUI), web browsing, emailing, etc. I am an Firefox user. Barely use Safari.

Overall, a very happy SL user.

Well, I used Safari (and have been using Safari 4 since the beta) and had no more problems with it than I had before 10.6. However, I have since switched to Chrome, mainly because I much prefer the interface and I've found it to be more stable too.

Gah, I wish it'd come out already!

The final 10.6.3 will come out before any new hardware I'm sure.
It would make sense to me. Or has apple released a x.x.1 build release with new hardware same-day in the past?

*Awaits new kexts for new MacBook Pro's and Mac Pro's*

Take your time, Apple.

Ya, this one seems to be taking them longer than normal. Must have a bunch of stuff in it for new Mac Book Pros, Mac Pros, MacBook Airs, and maybe Mac Minis! :D Which are also taking Apple a while! Come on!

Ah, dammit. And there is an "issue" listed, meaning that there is at least another round of builds to come. At this rate, this one will never be released--it's getting to be the Xeno's paradox of updates: every two weeks, it is 50% closer to being released. At some point, Apple is going to have to just give up and release the bloody thing.

The issue is with one of the update definitions currently on Software Update, though. This definition will most likely get updated once 10.6.3 actually ships, and so it's nothing to really worry about. I've seen similar update related problems when testing pre-release versions of other systems in the past, and all resolved themselves once the final version of the update appeared.

Jesus....this release is way, WAY overdue. I'm working on a new iMac Core i5 with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and its easily the worst release of any OS X I've worked with;

-photoshop crashes frequently
-finder freezes up
-external usb drives unmount after a short while giving me THIS message:

The usb drive issue is REALLY pissing me off. Theres no problem with the drive, it works on every computer EXCEPT the one at work.

By your pictures are you ejecting the USB drive before unplugging it?

It's taking a very long time - I wonder whether they are also making fixes in 10.6.3 that will render hackintoshes useless, hence the seeming endless development builds?

They need to get the iPad syncing correct. To me that's the reason why 10.6.3 has been cooking for long. Apple most likely will release 10.6.3 right before April 3rd.

Ridiculous

The wait for this update if you are one of the afflicted is getting stupid. I have downgraded my older computer to 10.5.8 to allow me to work, but my newer computer sits redundant waiting for a 'probable' fix in this update. More dot updates more frequently with less in them would be my recommendation to Apple.

See #5 in this thread for details.

I personally would be grateful if folks would stop posting how perfect 10.6.2 is. It is broken - you just may not know it!

Wow. I'm sick of people complaining how 10.6.2 is giving them so many issues. First of all, I would say 99% of people using 10.6.2 don't have issues. The remaining 1% don't know how to maintain their computer, which is the reason they're having issues.

+1. I totally agree.

That's what the marketing said. I'm not sure what made it to the programmers though.

It seems marketing was left to scramble for positive adjectives to describe the sweeping set of technical changes and new technology in 10.6.

"More stable" was probably not the most accurate choice since you typically don't increase stability by introducing major API changes and brand new low-level technology. However, speaking for myself and everyone I know with a Mac, it's been rock solid from day one and noticeably faster than 10.5. And that's a pretty amazing achievement when you consider what actually changed under the hood.

It's hard to complain when I have no issues with 10.6.2. For me it's ok whenever it comes.
