Menu bar seems to be buggy still, displaying icons won't enable/disable (at least for search)

I found a dirty work-around

gibmacos

When ya run it, press C to change the catalog, then type 4. After that, press 1 and enter and it begins the download of the latest Big Sur update.

Thank you! This appears to be working for me.

A fix for the 5300M and 5500M GPUs so that you can plug the laptop into an external monitor without activating hairdryer mode out the back of the box? A boy can dream.

Hahahahah. You're a funny guy. Apple will never fix that awful bug.

Double click on InstalAssistant.pkg (or something similarly named). Itll install to your application folder Install macOS Beta.app

Double click on that and itll install

Sorry for shortform I am on my iPad because its currently installing

What on earth could they be including that makes it almost a 10GB update file Jesus

Definitely under the hood changes to make the system more compatible with arm64 anything else related to transition.

This is new in Big Sur. Previously the "Preparing" phase took place after rebooting, resulting in a much longer down time. The new "Preparing" phase before the reboot means that your Mac is more available.
Basically, in lay man's terms, extracting the download contents prior to rebooting vs extracting the download contents after rebooting....

One thing that really bugs me in Big Sur that I wish they'd change/fix is the menubar icon spacing. I mean, this is my current menubar under Catalina:

View attachment 931501

With the increased spacing I don't think all the icons will fit on the screen on my freaking 27" iMac! Nevermind my laptop.

There seems to be a lot less respect for screen real estate usage in Big Sur; this is going to be very irritating for those of us who use every square centimeter to its fullest.

Spacing between icons needed for the new ARM based touch screen MacBooks

That was the name of beta 1.

But beta 2 has name Install macOS Big Sur Beta.app, i.e., they added the name Big Sur.

Thanks. I typed that on my iPad and didnt have my macOS install up to read right from screen. Still on my iPad with 2 min to go before the installer finishes.

I think that the wider spacing looks better, but I don't think I'm willing to sacrifice function for form in this case.

You could gain some space on the MenuBar by switching to a 24h clock, not showing the month, you know the month, remove the volume MenuBar item, (I) don't see any purpose for that one.
And then something (Stupidity) you can't change, Microsoft Edge in the MenuBar, they should just call it Edge, makes a difference.
I've hardly ever adjusted the volume from the menu bar, but the volume icon is also used for switching the audio Output Device, which I use all the time.

Mine has been sitting on just the tiniest bit of progress for like an hour now. I'm talking the progress bar just looks like a blue circle.

Literally all my other devices are already upgraded, but my iMac is being a potato. Any ideas?

new icons.
I saw this as well in the notes but unfortunately this did not fix it. Initially the Software Update screen looked normal upon restart but then it said no new updates available. So I closed out and opened again, and it went back to saying "Unable to check for updates"
I re-downloaded the developer profile installer, installed, rebooted, and then it showed the update was available.

Mine did that and then just completed. Guess it's a bug on some machines that the progress bar doesn't move. Nowadays with internal SSD drives it's hard to tell if a system is doing anything, in days of yore the hard disk would have been chattering like mad so you knew something was going on!

Yep, this all worked out for me. It's installed now. Thanks again!

About how long did yours take? I'm on a 2015 iMac with a hybrid drive, not a dedicated SSD.

iMessages still does not work for me, it keeps quitting on me. with these errors on sms

I have had this problem only on my Mac Pro (MacPro6,1) when I launch the Messages.app it bounces once, shows the dot under the icon, then the dot goes away, and I get the error message:

Now, on my MacBook Pro (will get identifier later) 15", which is the model prior to the 16", Messages launches without any issues. It's the only thing I have had problems with testing... I will probably deep dive into this to see what else I can find...

I was able to install the update to Beta 2, without any of the issues most of the people here are experiencing. On my MacBook Pro, I had to restart, to get the update to start but after that it just went and downloaded just fine...

I am really curious if other people have experienced this issue with Messages...

Does anyone know how to fix the messages app? I just get a blank slate with the preferences disabled. I have iCloud signed in though. There isn't an option I could fine to make it work.
