Try holding Shift just after you press Enter to confirm your password (as well as at the chime).

If that fails, you can as mentioned elsewhere boot into Single User mode by holding Cmd+S at the startup chime. That'll take you to a command prompt. From there, you may delete the VirtualBox kernel extensions (most likely under /Library/Extensions), but that'll need a bit of research if you're not familiar with the Unix command line.
Okay so I got into safe mode and I am looking for the extension now. I dont see the VirtualBox app under my apps. I dont need it so I can delete the whole thing. Would you know where I can find it?

Wow, this is massively faster. Even Firefox is massively faster. Great improvements in this build!

I hope PB 4 is also released in the next couple days if all these big performance changes are true in the latest build. So far PB 1-3 have all been almost no different compared to Yosemite speed (which was never all that bad, but should have at least seen some improvements.)

Go to the root of your boot disk in Finder -- you should see folders named Applications, System, Library, Users, etc.

Go into Library, then Extensions.

Look for anything in there which mentions VirtualBox and trash it.

I agree... I was excited to try the public beta on my rMBP after hearing about how great it was from everyone. I didn't notice any improvements. Yosemite worked okay for me, but did seem sort of buggy, slow at times.

I just want a stable El Capitan that I am satisfied with, that I can start using as my daily system...for awhile it's just been experimental to check it out, so to say, but the last beta is pretty stable. I hope this one seals the deal.

As long as it's beta, it will be "experimental" as an end-user. You'll get your for-daily-use OS X El Capitan when it's out to the public (or the GM).

I dont see an extensions folder in Library. I tried opening terminal in the spotlight so I could do it from there but it wouldnt open either.

Im surprised that the issue with preview not opening pdf files (or any other for that matter) is still an issue. If you clock on a file attachment in mail, it just half launches and freezes. It's been like that for last three betas. Pretty major issue to not resolve. Mail still crashes periodically, but not a big deal. I'd agree that there is a notable speed bump in this release.

Ok -- try System > Library > Extensions

(although that's very badly-behaved of VirtualBox to put its extensions in there -- that's for Apple stuff only)

Basically, Kernel Extensions can live at:

/Library/Extensions/ (user-added extensions) or,
/System/Library/Extensions (OS X-provided extensions).

It's worth looking under /Users/YourUserName/Library/Extensions (but I don't think there's a user-level extensions folder)

Mount the virtualbox dmg again. Then in terminal run /Volumes/VirtualBox/VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool

This will uninstall it cleanly. Just double clicking on the icon for uninstall stuck me in a loop of authorising an unsigned app to run.

Okay so Displaced and Mrumsd I am in the extensions folder. I searched for VirtualBox and the name of the specific extension in my picture but it doesnt come up. Is there a particular name they like to use?

Daveak I dont have the dmg anymore, you think if I download it and try that it will work?

Thank you guys so much for your help

This update has bricked my macbook pro (2014 rmb with filevault encrypted hd). The upgrade proceeded normally and now it restarts in a loop after login window. Most likely the filesystem is corrupted. Recovery partition doesn't work.

internet recovery gets me back to Mavericks :( and cannot restore my 10.11 time machine backups.

I should't have clicked that button!!!
