And, of course: MICROSOFT IS DEAD with its ridiculous Windows Mobile.

As they've been developing Windows Mobile 7 for 2 years without a peep out of them we truly don't know for sure. As Symbian isn't going to being work on their next generation OS until next year, Microsoft will be 2 years ahead of them for sure.

And they also sold out in many places meaning that if they'd had the stock they could have sold a lot more than 1 million phones.

Maybe, but I think this figure includes deferred orders.

Does anyone know what the population base of the iPhone 3G's launch market is off hand?

In all honesty, I was hoping it would flop. Just a little. Not enough to do serious damage to Apple, but just enough to remind them that the iPhone isn't the be-all end-all of Apple. Would have been nice to give Steve a mild jolt to remind him that there are other products at Apple not receiving half the damn attention the iPhone is getting lately. I'm still trying to figure out how you have a WWDC keynote without any Macs in it.

It seems if you're not a portable Apple product, you're not sitting at Steve's table anymore.

True, so really we can say Apple underestimated demand and isn't producing enough units. They probably need to have produced 3 or 4 million iPhones to truly meet demand. Which is pretty impressive. Hopefully they should keep pace, with about 2-3 million phones sold a month till the end of the year. Then release the 32GB model for a boost till June timeframe. New iPhone then, rinse and repeat.

Not true. You would need to weight the populations to get a true average.
Right, I thought I had covered that in the we know the distribution not to be so even comment. Chances are the US got most of the units.

The app store is incredible, simply incredible. These apps are so great; and that's what's been done by developers in just a couple months' work! Some of the games are so addictive and fun, it's crazy.

I think that when the first wave of games and other apps that have had a normal development period hits, we're REALLY going to be blown away.

Right now, for instance, I think that the games we're seeing are mostly ports of cellphone games. But in addition to a fast processor the iPhone has a ton of memory, devs should be able to create really impressive stuff.

And the sky has not actually fallen.

Apple must serve its markets.

Right now, the iPhone/iPod Touch are the hot areas. Additionally, industry wide, laptops/portables are selling faster than desktops. Apple obviously is going were the money is -- which is what any business needs to do to grow itself.

good job apple. this launch, while a little rockier is off to a huge start. i know they had some stock in chicago-land today so i think they're trying to keep them moving as fast as possible rather than the supply drying up like it did last year.

Bear in mind that in recent memory, portable products have really propelled Apple to the forefront.

There's a reason as to why Steve is on the 'portable mission', and it simply boils down to access. Portable products are far more accessible to people on a global scale given their pricing points.

It took ridiculously long to upgrade my 2G iPhone to 2.0 software, so much restoring and backing up.

But congrats to Apple on the sales, just wish they had more to go around so I can increase the number of phones that they sell.

I've just counted them up and the total population of the extra countries should be less than twice the US population, but I don't know the exact populations of the countries so its a bit of a guess. But Mexico is 100 million people but a lot of them are much poorer than the US. Excluding Mexico and the US and the total population of the others should be about 350-400 million.

EDIT: I missed Japan , 475-525 million is a better guess.

It's not that amazing! The rollout of the first generation (US only) was 270.000 iPhones in the first days. And now 1 milion for the worldwide launch?

I don´t know about other countries but in Spain Movistar didn´t get enough supplies, after driving several hours and going thru 9 stores ( none of then received any ) finally got one to write me on a waiting list ( I am nr. 80 ) so if I am lucky I will get my iphone some time in the next 2 months or so ?

So I would say Apple sold the entire production batch in 3 days ...

Saludos

It's not that amazing? Then what phone sold MORE than a million in its first three days?

That's not even the question. If you add subsidies back to the purchase price, the iPhone had about $500 million revenues in the first three days. If a phone with a fifth of the purchase price sells a million in three days I'm much less impressed.

wow..that's a lot of iphones!!! lines are still there, people just want this fon, that's what happens when you drop the price! people don't even care about the plans...they just want the fon...by the way the app store is sick...sucky rollout Apple, but nice product:D

I'm still a bit wary about the App Store.

If sales figures continue to be healthy (and I believe they will), then we're likely to see a LOT more large and small developers flock to the platform. Apple simply doesn't have the resources (or rather, doesn't want to devote the resources) to test and vet all the apps going up on the App Store.

I think at some point, they're either going to limit those who can submit apps (boooh!), throw everything up on the App Store without testing (not really an option), or allow people to distribute apps directly via the web.

You wouldn't know that around here reading some of these posts.

Reminds me of the story about the mother of twins boys, one a total pessimist and the other a irrepressible optimist. She asks the child psychologist what she can do to even them out a little. He tells her on their next birthday to give the pessimist all the toys he's ever wanted, and to give the optimist a big crate of manure. So that's what she does. Within five minutes the pessimist, surrounded by all of his new toys, is bored and glum. The optimist is diving head first into the crate of manure, saying "There's got to be a pony in here somewhere!"

pricing?

Anyone know how much Apple is pricing the 8gb and 16gb model of 3G in apple retail stores?

If so, do they make you sign a contract at that point within the retail store?

Thanks
