And don't forget the other countries launching on the same day. Not only unlocked phones direct from Apple, but stock for all the Apple stores in those countries, and for all the different carriers that will sell it. It's true it was easier this time round to order the 4S for launch day than it was for the 4. That doesn't necessarily mean less demand, it could also mean more stock beforehand.

You're right! I sometimes forget there's other people in the world... I blame it on southern thinking. ^_^

I have to laugh reading the posts of all you Nostradamuses out there. But admit it. Almost all of you were underwhelmed at the 4S announcement, hoping for more, like the iPhone 5. Now you all all like "yep, knew it all along!" Oh please

Most people believed the early predictions and figured it would do well, but still are surprised that it did this well.

My Facebook posts read: "iPhone 4s. Meh" and then "Ugh! I guess I'll get the damn phone."

I still would have preferred a redesign. But that's not because I don't actually love the iPhone 4 design, I just like it when things change from the way they used to be. They could have made it a 4x4 cube and I would have enjoyed it... Because it's different.

The only reason I'm getting the iPhone 4s is because I like to get the most features available in a iPhone and Siri isn't on the iPhone 4.

My opinion I the only reasons why this launch will have higher sales numbers than the original iPhone 4 is because they simply had more phones on hand to sell and are rolling out faster. If the iPhone 4 was given the same opportunities, I think they would tie in how successful they were.

OH GOD! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THE TWO YEAR CONTRACT OVERALL CHARGES YOU FOR 4 AND A HALF IPHONES!!! THAT'S IT! UNLOCKED IPHONE FOR ME!

Was I the only person to be glad what the case didn't change? I have docks and in car cradles, etc, that I don't want to replace. Being able to use them for my wife's ip4 as well as my ip5 is a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Nope. I've always liked the way it looked. Apple can stick with the current unibody look on their laptops for a few more years as far as I'm concerned.

People goes on about wanting larger screens on their phones, but I don't see how this is attractive for those with smaller hands (e.g. 50% of the population).

I kinda wish Apple would do 2 sizes. I prefer the smaller form factor. I've used some of those bigger Android phones and while the screen IS nice for some things, I've never been a fan of the more practical use. However, for a guy like my dad with hamfists and bad eyes... a bigger screen would be a lot nicer.

If the Siri stuff works out we may start to see phones with smaller screens coming out. I can imagine a small phone that functions as a PDA,camera and communications device (and is voice controlled) being popular.

Siri is easily the most exciting thing about this release. Time will tell how awesome (or not) that it is. I think it's going to be though.

I dunno. The only people who think the iPhone 4S was underwhelming were tech pundits and specification dweebs.

I appeared to be the only person at my office who loved it. I really like the form factor and build of the 4 and didn't figure the design would change and the specs on the phone are great anyway. And I knew they'd sell loads anyway because the vast majority of people buying these things are not the dorks with their Androids going, "Well, I can download my software from any source I like..."

Not that I take issue with that, but techs as a general rule are completely out of touch with most people. Most people care about virtually none of the gripes that get parroted around here. The iPhone is "cool" and Apple is "cool" and that's all the reason most people need.

I think techies in general out of touch with normal people and why they are disappointed with the latest iPhone looking the same as before. Long before Apple came along with the iPhone, people were buying mobile phones as fashion accessories. And they still do. In the same way fashion conscious folk don't go to the mall to buy the same shirt they bought last year, they don't really want to drop hundreds of dollars on a phone that looks the same as the current model they own.

So this stuff is genuinely important to some people. And in many cases it has nothing to do with them being specification dweebs. They are the complete opposite to that. They probably think you Apple hipsters are dorks for caring about Siri and the 8 megapixel camera just as much as the other guys who love memory, processor, display technology etc. :D

I can't wait to hear the haters spin this, haha.

They'll just call us "sheep" and "fanboys" like they always have and that they should have known they could count on us to throw our money at :apple: (the official symbol of fanboys) so gullibly.

They were sold out of the unlocked, full-price launch day stock here in Canada by 4pm when I ordered mine. My est date delivery date is Oct 24-Nov 1.

No. Feel free to look back at my posts I knew exactly what it was going to be. I was trying to keep people from setting themselves up for unreasonable disappointment. I also said the 4s would join the 3GS and 4 as the top three selling smartphones of 2011 so I guess I am iphonestradamus.

just preordered 4s 64GB Japan.
2 years contract, initial ¥0, basic monthly fee ¥65xx ($86) for unlimited data.

I can understand the press reaction being disappointed. They travelled across the U.S. in expectation of a good story and what do they come away with?

1. It's a bit faster
2. The cameras a bit better
3. There is some new voice control, that looks to have real potential, but which Apple itself describes as beta.

On top of that the presentation was kind of subdued. Imagine the state of mind of Tim and all, knowing about Steve while they did the presentation :(

There is a difference between a good story and a popular product.

Its funny that a lot of people complain YET apples servers just couldnt handle the load of that much traffic buying at the same time!

I had no complains about this iphone as it was expected and i sold my iphone for a very nice price 4 months ago so i can buy this :)

It took Apple longer this time, more stock maybe?

I was talking to an AT&T district manager and he told me that Apple committed a little over 600,000 units for the iPhone 4 launch day and has committed 1.7 million units for the iPhone 4S launch day. He explained that because all carriers have the same chipsets and that the external cases were already being used, that production on the iPhone 4S was much quicker than the iPhone 4 and that they had more time to produce them. IDK

Preordered two for my wife and I. THey only gave us a day to complete the preorder order before losing place in line, but we did and delivery by the 14th.

My son gets the 4 and my daughter gets the 3GS. (So many families do this that i know of)

While a larger screen would have been interesting, the 4's form of glass and metal band is awesome. I'm glad to hold on to that for another year at least.

I think a lot of people are underestimating siri and where it is going to take us. It's not just speech to text, like what we've experienced over the past 10 years. It also isn't just a new input method, but rather a completely new way to interact with your phone. I know I will find it invaluable for working while in the car - not that I want to do ever more work, but having the ability to have my phone read my texts/emails AND respond to them AND include calendar integration will be fantastic.

I'm sure there will be times when it's inappropriate to talk to your phone, but that's not much different than the times it is inappropriate to type on your phone.

Of course, a faster processor, better and faster camera, iCloud, and iOS 5 will also add up to an overall better experience.

Meh... I'll get one when I get one... No hurry, really.

I don't need to get it on launch day to feel like a man...

I have two kids... 'nuff said :D

Anyone standing in line should wear a black turtleneck with jeans.

I am happy you guys are happy. As someone who carries an iPhone and a Thunderbolt, I do NOT understand all these catty remarks about Android phones. Unless you work for Apple or own their stock, you aren't really, well.......

It's just odd. You can feel completely certain in your purchases without slagging on those of others. And yes, both sides do it. We humans love our tribalism.

I checked my upgrade eligibility for grins, and giggles just now, and I'm not eligible until Feb 12, 2012. Unlocked here I come! Any word on when in November?

I got this phone based on its picture and video taking. The other stuff is just icing on the cake. Got really sick of how clunky android has been lately even on custom roms.

I didn't read all the posts, but I'm sure I'm not the first one to think that Steve's death had something to do with this. It was the lead story all over the place on the news. For some, it made the decision to "take the plunge" into an emotional one.

Perhaps but keep in mind at the time of it's release the iPhone 3GS was the greatest selling smartphone out there. Now all of those 3GS owners on contract are upgrading. No surprise really. I'm buying out of contract simply because it's a great phone, and I can. :D

I got all the way to the check out and balked. I was thinking "$471... that's a lot of money. And my 3GS works fine."

Not like I can't afford it. I'm just a cheap-ass :(

I'm just buying a cheaper iPhone 4...I wouldn't of used Siri anyway.

Really? I'll never understand saving $100 over 2 years to get a weaker phone... Even if you don't want Siri, the A5 and camera alone (and antenna ;) is probably worth the tiny % increase over the contract length. The phone will be that much more "fresh" in a year (in terms of what it's able to handle as far as the core OS and apps).
