That's a bit unreasonable comparison. Come on...just list the difference besides size (which I'll gladly give you).

You've got to try apps on this thing, and games especially, and you'll see how the increase in size makes a huge difference in functionality. Things you just wouldn't bother doing on an iPod touch are natural here. Games that were good on the iPod touch are now great here.

Even MultiTouch is far better. On the iPod touch it's a flick here and a poke there. On the iPad you use full gestures. It's liberating. I can't wait to see the software that gets created for this thing.

Great!

Great news! I thought the first estimate of 700,000 sold was overstated to say the least! Easter meant a lot of closed stores (if not all), so we are really looking at pre orders and Saturday sales. So, great launch!

Hoping to pick one of these up in the next few months. Hope all that have one are enjoying them.

That's only a rumor. One that I would love to happen, but nobody really knows what Apple is going to do next.

You can usually get a good idea what's coming. And we know 4.0 is coming, and we're pretty sure there will be some level of 3rd-party multitasking. If I'm wrong, I'll be very surprised.

So unless the 3G release is equal to these sales, we'll see a price drop when?

June?

Not hating. I bought one full on knowing I was gonna be stung later for my idiotic need to be an early adopter.

Size DOES make a difference.

You don't think precision in the user interface isn't a different matter on the iPad as opposed to an iPhone?

Reminds me of the people complaining about the fact Apple did dare to sell the original iMac without a floppy disc drive.

Worst analogy ever. Floppy disc was REPLACED with something better. What's replacing FLASH right now? HTML 5? Don't make me laugh. What is the substitute for my sister being able to IM a friend while browsing and listening to Pandora? These are real world things people that arent Apple Zealots do with netbooks. If Apple had these things, and a competitor didn't, Apple Zealots would tear that company to shreds. To deny that is to lie.

My guess is there will be a second version in time for the holiday season, maybe an October release. That's when we'll probably see a price drop.

Try swimming laps in your bathtub. Now try it in a swimming pool. Size changes the game completely. It allows you to do things you never could before, or could only in a cramped manner.

I understand where you are coming from, because I thought the same way until Saturday. I had a 16GB 3G preordered but ended up cancelling my order after I tried one out the Wifi version. It's simply not worth the money (to me). The ability to take the iPad into the kitchen with me instead of hitting the Pause button during a movie is simply not worth $700.

"Gene Munster awoke with a 12 inch boner on iPad launch day; 3 times larger than the one he had predicted in the week preceding..."

Could anyway point to another product that shift 300,000 units in one day?

This is tremendous. It already sold more than the Google phone, Nexus One, on one day than the entire life of that phone.

Nor is it worth it to me if that were the only advantage. That's not what I normally do, but I did it this time for the first time in my life. Then I realized what I had done and was surprised how naturally I made it part of my life. On day one.

So to each their own. You want a different device? More power to you. I also have a MacBook Pro and that has a place in my life too. But there is something truly amazing about the iPad. It's going to be a big, big success.

So this product isn't for you. That doesn't mean others don't see a use for it. Myself, working with a large group of developers (in a leading role), I am tired of working with my computer at night. I don't need to bring my work back home, and if I need to, my company provided laptop is perfect for that. What I want is a device that entertains me. Not a full fledged PC. I want casual games, watching videos (youtube, vimeo), play with my photos, home movies, watching occasional a movie, read news, social networking. Looks like most of that is perfect on the iPad. (heck the only thing missing is that it should be able to pour me a beer :D ) And no, I don't have one yet, I am waiting on the 3G version...

But stop reflecting what you need/want as the only golden rule of a product. Most people don't need a Ferrari, but you know what? There is a good market for it, and pretty profitable (outside of the recession influences).

Your arrogance just amazes me...

And :apple: Apple, can you guys just provide an iPad optimized iMovie? Looks like a great job was done with the iWorks suite. Now just release iLife... :)

Thank you.....someone that doesn't just drink the kool-aid and sees the iPad (or any device) for what it is.

This is exactly how I used my iPod Touch and now how I use my iPad. I don't want to lug my MacBook to just sit back and browse MacRumors....or Google Reader. I'm doing casual web surfing....answering emails...playing games etc.

But you know what....if I was someone who spent my life on Flash websites.....I think it'd be a big enough person to say this device isn't for me and find something else.

For those that think the iPad is overpriced.....well guess what.....you don't have to buy it! Really! Nobody is making you. Even Steve Jobs isn't making you.

The iPad is not a netbook. It's not a laptop. It's a larger version of the iPod Touch. It's a content consumption device. It does exactly what you see in the specs......nothing more.....nothing less. If this isn't something for you, then don't freakin' buy the thing.

And the reason Microsoft's next mobile OS doesn't have multitasking is because Microsoft doesn't want to cannibalize the MacBook either, right?

Is that the theory?

Have you ever used Windows Mobile 7? I haven't either. So, I really can't comment on it. However, I can ask you; why are you comparing a cellphone's OS to the ipads? Oh, let me guess...hmm, maybe because they're the same thing?

I knew those analyst number were way off. And I don't think the lack of 3G model is holding sales back by that much...I would think most of the models sold will be wifi....cheaper stuff always sells better, and there is not an insignificant premium over the 3G model.

Decent sales for the first weekend and a new product.

IMHO we are on the cusp of a new direction in computing.

Reminds me of when the first Mac was introduced. :)

Welcome to the way intelligent people will react to this overpriced/under-featured device given the current economic reality in the country and world.

At this point the iPad is nothing more than a toy. When it actually does become a viable laptop replacement, then maybe it will win over those of us that don't just robotically buy everything that Steve poops out.

Stop already. IT'S NOT A LAPTOP OR A LAPTOP REPLACEMENT.

Think about 3G not being out - One example here

I preordered the 32GB iPad and must say it exceeds my expectations:

1. Speed, Wi-Fi is indeed very fast for me and I don't even have a state of the art router. Mine is a 7 year old Belkin.

2. The colors are much more vivid than I expected.

3. Many of the apps (I only got the free Apps so far), are really good. I really liked the Bloomberg, BBC and Aquarium Apps. And, I'm not British!

What is not as good as expected:

I expected it to be heavy, but the density is quite a bit more than expected and have to use props for now in bed. Have been on it over 15 hours this weekend. Will get case, looking for something more than any of the options I have seen to date (spent over 30 mins researching cases alone).

Here is something important:

My wife carries a Blackberry for work and my Junior in school has a Macbook and iPhone. My brother in Long Island has none of the above and neither does my 76 year old mom. All 4 want an iPad.

My wife, daughter and my brother, ALL are waiting for the 3G version. I work from home, so Wi-Fi is good enough for me, coupled with my iPhone.

Mine was the test unit and I am the guinea pig.

We will be ordering 3 3G iPads and one more Wi-Fi (for my mom), in the next 10 days. Just want to get the units (mine and the other 300K) working for a week to 10 days, to see if there any unexpected issues, before putting in the orders.

I believe intl launch and 3G will put over 1 Million iPads out there by the end of the May, at the latest.

You all know these figures include the preordered ipads
so 300,000 sold total
120,000 sold on first day of preorder

so one might say 3 weeks of sales...300,000 units

im not sure if i am correct, but i think most people will hold of until its worth it.

1. people want multitasking, for skype, msn, etc (i would buy 4 as my family and i love the what they could bring.

2. Camera - Skype'ing your family from abroad while seeing them would be awesome.

3. Tethering. This is my most important feature and i refuse to buy ANY until this is sorted out,, how dare they not allow me to tether the ipad to my iphone. I would happily pay more for the ability, but i refuse with out exception to pay for another data subscription. (not only that, i only have to upgrade my iphone when 4g comes out rather then buy a new ipad)

I totally disagree. The average target customer for this device doesn't care about those things. Maybe the camera issue, but even that's not a big deal to most people. I think some are waiting for the 3G version. But once these things get out into the wild and your friends got one and you see one at the airport or at Starbucks and the new commercials start coming out, it will really take off.

Size DOES make a difference.

You don't think precision in the user interface isn't a different matter on the iPad as opposed to an iPhone?

You bet it does! I never said it didn't. Besides for extreme portability, bigger is always better. It's more pleasing on the eyes. I totally agree that it is a better device than the Touch, due it's size. I didn't call it a Touch. I called an oversized Touch. I'm not discounting the effects of the ipad being big. These effects are truly significant. So, BESIDES it being big (and hence, having a much larger screen), how is it different than a Touch?
