I wonder in particular whether Apple also extends this to the people making their equipment. Technically they would work for Foxconn, so they wouldn't be "Apple employees" but practically they would work on Apple products every day. It would be especially nice if they included them too. Though they have no direct responsibility for them, they could still be regarded as members of "The Apple Team" IMO. Especially because of how closely Apple controls their outsourcers to guarantee quality and (trying to to :) ) prevent leaks.

PS: Not saying that what they did isn't nice, but that would be the difference between 'nice gesture' and 'Wow!'.

Agreed, I'd love to know the scope of this. I think you're right on Foxconn, but for me if this covers all retail staff, that's still way above what I'd expect from a Walmart or what have you.

A quick google gives me a Quora that suggests between 1-10,000 actual Apple staff in China and... wow, 1.3 million (?) for Foxconn. Which is an order of magnitude so significant, you'd definitely want to make a cut off where you could. Obviously not everyone is affected but I can't see them writing off the upper limit of 1.3 million iPads. Up to 1,000 older model iPads.... yeah, I reckon?

Not trying to turn this into a "bad thing" at all. But, what's with the recent fascination with the face masks? They don't help protect you from getting a virus by wearing them around. They're only meant to keep you from spreading an infection you've already got. And if you think you might have coronavirus already, you shouldn't be going in to work or out on public anyplace, face mask on your face or not!

I stand corrected. I thought it was just a selection of hot drinks and biscuits and a timpanic thermometer!

And those thermometers range in price from $25 to $200 when looking at them on Amazon. This gift from Apple could mean the difference between life and death for someone.

How many of us here are giving away our hard-earned money to help the people affected by this situation?

What for all 200k employees?
I know my friends in Russia always enjoyed care packages from America with American goods.

Don't be one of those that believes everything you read on the internet. That article is very untrustworthy, cobbled together by bits and pieces and not backed by any scientific proof. Proof is needed.

The photo they used in the middle of the article is of Korea, and the photo's tagline has nothing to do with the photo. These are just dead giveaways that someone threw up (how appropriate!) some overblown story because they think they are an expert. And you fell for it.

Yes, COVID-19 is very serious, but the last thing we need are extremes on either side of the spectrum, either downplaying too much or blowing it way out of proportion. Reason needs to keep a level head.

More importantly, are they still getting a paycheck?

No one’s asking these real questions.

As a former Apple Retail employee, I can virtually be certain hourly employees aren’t being paid. Hence the iPad, to appear as a ”good will” gesture for them not collecting a check.

Management and salaried positions will continue to be paid, I’m sure.

That’s a really nice gesture, I’m sure it’s been greatly received. I see the virus has spread in the US, which isn’t surprising, and 1 death so far, 3 more confirmed cases in the U.K. today with the U.K. government at last taking it seriously, although you don’t know what is going on behind the scenes.

Listen we know your dying, but We won't pay people more in the U.S.A , So if you don't die.. get back to work for 50p, because we won't pay people in our own country a higher wage....enjoy the cookies though!

I agree. Everyone going crazy congratulating tim apple over this PR move. I would congratulate him if he paid the chinese workers at the foxconn factories more than $3USD/hr or diversified production to country with better human rights such as India.

I apologize if i don't think that a trillion dollar company donating some 'tax deductible' token overstock items is the greatest charitable gesture in human history.

Poster you quoted appears to be an alarmist.
Also very fond of the word "Wow".
Several of their post start with it.

Maybe for 1, Angel shouldn't be so Free with posting dubious links. :p

As an Apple employee, were you in China? And have a similar-in-scope infectious outbreak imposed upon you, your coworkers, and public in general?

The iPad was literally the first item listed in the first paragraph.

that's a lot of carbs
It's a lot of ways of staying hydrated, along with a bunch of calories that may be more enjoyable that whatever else you're getting. (Plus safety supplies - hard-to-get N95 masks and thermometer, wipes, sanitizer - and a way be entertained or stay in touch better)

This is a slap in the face gesture. Apple should be providing compensation packages to their employees there and money towards developing a quick cure for the virus worldwide.
Slap in the face? Really? How do you know they're not doing the things you're insisting they should.

Struggling to figure out how the usual naysayers will turn this into a bad thing.

I‘m unsure about this. They are under an unprecedented forced quarantine, unable to work, and Tim sends them some biscuits and tea and tells them he feels for the inconvenience. On the surface, that’s nice, but a fairly patronizing gesture. Why not send them some cash bonus they, or their relatives/friends who aren’t cashing a paycheck, can use to actual survive?
