I'd sell the thing and use that money to get latest MBP a couple years down the road.

I think Im doing the right thing. I at least called them and let them know what they did. I didnt want someone to get fired over this. If you think apple support is good than you would send it back to. I have an iphone that was out of warranty and had a problem with it. They could of said sorry about my luck but they went out of there way and sent me a new one. Now thats care. I waited over a month for my mbp and called every day and ask why they arnt shipping it. They got in a hurry and made a mistake.

Lets see, you got a NEW iPhone after yours was out of warranty, so you're okay with keeping a second laptop? Your logic makes no sense! So their mistake is your gain?

Glad to see you're doing the right thing. Who knows? Maybe your good deed won't go unrewarded. From the looks of things, you might get to keep it ;)

yes, i hope and pray that apple will tell you to keep it. a good deed gets a good reward. :)

I'm so happy to hear that you've made the steps to correct Apple's issue. If they let you keep it, even better! Kudos to you. :)

first of all apple will never tell him to "just keep it". They might not contact him anymore resulting in him keeping it, but they will never say those words. Everybody keeps saying "what if its somebody who has already paid for the laptop" so what. If it is all they gotta do is contact apple tell apple they never recived it and waalaa they will ship another one. So nobody gets hurt in this apple would never notice unless notified. So all this moral this and moral that come on now crawl out of your bubble in your perfect upper middle class, parents paid for collage, no student loans involved world and step into the real cutthroat world. Were you only get as much as you take. Ask steve jobs he'll tell you how to be cutthroat like charging three grand for a effing laptop that dosent do more then any other laptop.

They didnt call me back today. I will keep everyone updated. Would it be better if I told them I opened it?
Well you did your part. It's up to them now.

Some of the 'moral high-ground' takers in this thread are ridiculous. There is no conceivable way that you can categorize it as theft to keep the laptop in this circumstance. That is one of the most blatant oversimplifications I have ever heard.
....

Some of the comments here speak to ignorance of the big picture.

Well I think some of the justifications to keep things that don't technically belong to you (the general "you") are ridiculous. All this "well it only costs apple ___" and "finders keepers" attitudes are rather disappointing.
And ignorance to the bigger picture? Please.
Anyway, the OP did the right thing in the end.

KEEP IT!!!!!!......about time somebody got something for nothing!!!,i found a breitling blackbird just before christmas,in its bag, boxed, brand new,now sat on on my wrist!!!!....whoever lost it or forgot to pick it up...TOUGH!!,im sure if i lost something i doubt if i would ever see it again....oh and phone your credit card company and say you lost your card, they will send you a new one with a different 16 digit number on and the one you bought your original MBP with will no longer be valid.....

In the UK, keeping something you find is actually theft and you could find yourself in a lot of trouble if you ever get caught.

The point is this isn't exactly "found" is it. Im with the "keep it" camp purely because apple is not a struggling company they are quite financially dandy, no-one will get in any trouble for this i doubt they would have ever noticed. Oh and of-course *yawn* hard economic times means everyone for themselves.

People do a lot worse every day, people from the UK have you not seen the news on the bankers of britain recently. this is so small fry in comparison it has no meaning. Some of the "keeping it is immoral" camp seem to be sore losers really. Enjoy your apple lottery win you bugger!

+1

You are an incredibly lucky man. If you want, I can send you my gold encrusted Macbook in exchange.... You'd have to supply the gold though :D :D

This is such a ridiculous thread. You bought a $3000 laptop, they gave you two; they just made 1.2BILLION last quarter, and you've got people telling you to return it?

You got lucky, so keep it, nothing more needs to be said on this, i don't even get why this thread is still going.

I wasn't commenting on whether the OP should keep the extra MBP or not (that's covered under separate "unsolicited goods" laws anyway), but replying the the poster who said they'd found an expensive watch and kept it

Hand it in to local police. If no-one declares it found within a certain time-frame, it's yours.

We are talking about this topic right now in my legal business class. My professor just brought up the fact that the FTC has made a law that said,
"In Ohio, if something gets mailed to you and you DID NOT order it, you can keep it as a gift, even if they give a prepaid envelope to send it back"

So, if you are in ohio, you are in luck:)

You are doing it for you, not anyone else.

yea I signed for it.

Hey I applaud you for doing the right thing. As some have noted, you could have gotten a weird knock on the door with someone saying they were picking up "the mistake."

I wouldn't open and use the machine just yet. Give them a few days to be fair as it's probably unusual to deal with a problem like this.

As for the people who cite stupidity such as possession is 9/10's of the law, well that's why they are, not you.

Sit tight and this situation will resolve itself. And yes, the universe has taken note. (Applause) - for you!

Do I need to tell you who these moochers who urge dishonesty voted for?
Nuff said.

Im a 25 year old grown man. And yes i would have keep it and said nothing about it. I guess thats just me. I dont see anything wrong with it. Possission is 9/10 of the law. If they want it back contact me and if i sold it already then their SOL. And if or when they try and hit my cc for the amount i would just request a chargeback or file a claim for an unatharized charge. I mean come on its not hurting them to lose one measley computer. And everybody who is saying send it back must a not be as broke as most of us or b is jelous because he got two 17's and you dont even have one.

You may be 25, but a man does the right thing. That means return the computer that was sent to you by mistake. Do you cheat on your taxes too?

Come on man, how about I come over to your house and grab one or two expensive items and keep em? I am sure as a big ole 25 year old man, you have lots of expensive stuff and wouldn't miss one or two measly things (toys).

Oh yea, I am painfully jealous. I so like totally want that 17" MPB(By the way man, learn to spell. It's another one of those grown up things you should learn to be a man)

This thread is un^$%&&$ing believable.

Keep blowing things out of proportion.

your arguments are just well....*yawn*

They sent me an another one by mistake:) I dont want anyone from apple to get fired. Should I call them? I wonder if I could get a reward.

i feel like that they will let you keep it. unless it was meant for someone else. but still i have a feeling its not worth their time to investigate.

Does this thread really need to have petty insults about spelling and argument critiquing which could get the thread closed down? I'd rather like it to stay open so that any updates from the OP will be easier to find.

I believe you are legally allowed to keep any mailed, unsolicited goods not intended for another person. Obviously, you should check on that.

However, what might happen is they'll just charge your credit card for the second computer.

I think that's only if it was addressed to the wrong person at your address. If it was addressed to you and you signed for it, you could be found liable for paying for it or returning it. To keep it is something called 'conversion' which is a fancy legal term (if my memory serves) of 'converting' it from their property to yours 'illegally'.

You called them. They said call back. Maybe they 'lost' it. It's up to them now...

heres another sixteen year old that would keep it :p but come on, it was their problem that they sent it, therefore they should have to deal with the loss of the 1000$ it cost to manufacture it, thats just how i was taught

The cost of ONE 17" MBP is a drop in the bucket to Apple.

That being said, I'd wait for a return call. Give them a week or so, then I'd say keep it.

I've seen news clips where companies send to police to collect the item and either return it or deliver it to the correct address.QUOTE]

Utter rubbish!

I agree guilfox. As they say in Wikipedia
