It costs thousands to you, not to Apple. Maybe $300?
Total crap.

Apple makes around a 30% profit margin on it's computers, (see their Q2 results for exact figure). Meaning it costs them about $1950 to manufacture a 17" MacBook Pro. And thats just the materials, that doesn't include R&D, advertising etc.

To the OP: If you ordered your laptop directly from Apple.com, and they sent you two (one by mistake) maybe you should check your online transaction record at apple.com and make sure your credit card hasn't already been charged... twice. If somebody duplicated the transaction, it might just have been duplicated everywhere... Two 17" MBPs, two charges on credit card. Just a thought, but I'd definitely check to make sure if I was you.

It would be really a shame if somehow you returned the "extra" MBP, only to see a nice charge on your credit card bill the next month for the same machine... There are people who order more than one at a time, so this is one explanation as to why you got two shipped to you. Somebody typed 2 instead of 1 somewhere.

I remember getting an extra burger in my Big Mac once, does that count?
Probably not but I thought I'd share that amazing experience with you all :p

I would of probably phoned Apple personally, just because I'd rather not be charged for an extra MBP or have the police knocking on my door.
A few years ago there was quite a similar story in the UK news of a woman who was taken to court over money she spent which her bank had accidently put into her account, she didn't mention it but she got found out.

Which eventually could of happened in the OP's case.

To summarize everybody's posts:

You did the right thing to begin with, but you can keep it now if they don't call you. Just don't call them again asking what to do. If they really wanted it back, they would have called you by now.

I actually thought this, Apple dont give anything away for free, are you sure you weren't contacted by an Apple sales rep on the phone or anything later on to confirm your order which could have resulted in a double transaction? it happened to me with my 17".

No they never called me yet. I checked the tracking # and the address was mine. I checked my old order status and it didnt have an extra one on it. I was one of the ones whos order was on hold for a month and so I called and asked every day why. they delayed my order twice.

If it is a double order then wont be on your order status, it will be a completely new order status, i assume you gave Apple your email adress, check your email for more than one order confirmation or order number.

maybe some just got tired of you calling so they sent out another one. you said that when you called they had no record of a 2nd one being sent. so it would seem that just calling them a bunch = getting more than one computer:p

You must feel pretty lucky. As others said you did your part by contacting them. Keep and enjoy two 17" MBP's! Or sell and make a nice profit.

Someone Make A Poll

Can Someone (op?) Make A Poll? I'm Curious To See How Many People Would Just Not Call Apple , How Many Would Stop Contacting At This Point, And How Many People Would Call Again...

I would give them about 2 weeks from the time you first contacted them Then keep it. later if they try to charge your credit card dispute it. why cant i have this type of luck? If it were me they would have charged me twice and delivered no mbp.

check the packing slip compare both packing slips for order numbers if they match then they could have made a very rare mistake.

theyre pretty accurate and never have problems as its pretty automated when it comes to online orders.

but yeah double-check and compare the web order numbers and check your bank balance.

goodluck.

Or A Poll To See Who Actually Types Like That? That's Got To Be Very Time Consuming And Hard To Read. :p
