I feel terrible about not upgrading. Just not terrible enough to do it at this time. Last year I upgraded to an iPhone X after three years with a 6+. I gave my sister my old 6+, she promptly cracked the screen, but it still works fine (after getting the free battery replacement), so she's not upgrading either. So you are trying to make yourself feel better for not upgrading, the X is still a great phone but all of the features you listed that you didn’t “care” or “need” are going to be added on the future iPhones, aren’t you going to upgrade at some point?
My X didn't turn into a total brick, but faceID died and the camera lenses were fogged. I had AppleCare, so it only cost me $100 to get it replaced. I mainly got AppleCare because of a five-year-old and three two-year-olds at home, but this was totally my fault.Very true... but hopefully, if I accidentally wade into a pool again with my phone in my pocket, it won’t turn into a total brick
Exactly, I had switch to Chrome in my Mac just to watch it in 4K..
You don’t understand what an option is?Um, I hate to break it to you, but....
“Compelling” is subjective. If you travel internationally, dual SIM might very well be compelling. It has real impact. Faster FaceID, faster charging, better video, better display, better pics, better battery life, better sound, better glass, faster radio, T-Mobile Band 71; some combination of those free upgrades—in addition to optional upgrades like 512GB storage and a 6.5” display—can make upgrading from the 2017 X ”worth it”. And for those who like to have a couple hundred Safari tabs open, the free upgrade to 4GB of RAM can have real impact. What he's talking about is the specs you've listed are technical specs that don't actually have any real impact on the end user experience.
I tend to agree, nothing compelling in the above that would want me to upgrade as well.
Interestingly, the iPhone XS is $50 more expensive than the iPhone X last year (in Australia).
And the price of the fully kitted out MAX. Oh lordy help me please! Forget it! We're talking laptop prices.
i dont know you need to sell a second one if the screen breaks..... New iphone screen and back glass repairs are crazy expensive 2the video convinced me that the sacrifice is worth it. Now selling one of my kidneys if someone is interested.
The XS offers quite a few upgrades over last year’s X: 4GB RAM (possibly only on the Max but purported to be on the 5.8” XS too), better camera, smarter image processing, improved display (10 bit HDR?), improved sound, gold color option, 512GB storage option, IP68 water resistance, Dual SIM capability, faster FaceID, faster wireless charging, faster CPU, up to 50% faster GPU and the machine learning neural engine co-processor goes from 2-core/600 billion operations per second to 8-core/5 trillion ops/sec—over 700% faster.
Also stronger glass, better battery life, more frequency bands (including T-Mobile's 600 MHz LTE Band 71), a faster radio (gigabit downloads) and stereo video recording via 4 microphones.
Lots of improvements, with no increase in price. Also available (for an extra $100) is a 6.5” display, instead of last year’s 5.8”.
So what exactly were you expecting that would change your opinion of the XS being a “rubbish upgrade”?
Yep. This right here. When the phone costs the same as a MacBook Pro, it's time to treat it like a MacBook Pro purchase.
You can minimize every upgraded feature and try to convince yourself it’s “a rubbish upgrade” but you’re objectively wrong. This year’s XS is absolutely, 100%, without a doubt a better iPhone in so many ways compared to last year’s X.Whilst what you have said for the most part is true, do you believe that anyone with a X would notice the majority of these differences?
I have an X, and haven’t had a chance to experience the XS, but I doubt that I’ll pick it up and appreciate that it now had 4GB of RAM.
The display, from what I can see, is identical - the XS has a HDR P3 True Tone display at 458ppi, just like the X.
I turned on Face ID when I got my phone and it has worked >98% of the time on the first attempt, with minimal delay to unlocking. I may notice that the XS is faster, but as far as I’m concerned, even if it was instant, that is only saving a fraction of a second.
The original story states that the XS has faster wireless charging, however I think that is incorrect. The XS, just like the X, is fast charge capable (up to 50% in 30 mins) using a 30W USB-C Power adapter (XS) or a 29W USB-C adapter (X) - read the footnotes on the Apple comparison page for details.
Yes - 30 minutes does mean a better battery life, but again, not a hugh improvement worthy of an upgrade.
Better camera? Both have 12MP (back) and 7MP (front), with mainly software improvements. Again, for me, nothing earth shattering to upgrade for.
I’ll stick my neck out and say that if i used an XS, I won’t get a warm feeling from realising that my X A11 chip was short changing me by only working at 600 billion ops per sec.
Again, for me, I could make do with 128GB, so having the option of 512GB is not a selling option. I appreciate that there may be people out there who need a phone with half a terabyte of storage for which this would be an upgrade, but I’m not one of them.
The XS does have improved water resistance (2m for 30 mins vs 1m for 30 mins). Given I don’t take my phone in the bath or swimming, not going to be an issue (especially given that any water damage is not covered by the standard Apple warranty).
Ultimately, I agree with the original comment that you responded to - a rubbish upgrade not worth it if you already have the X. As a lot of people have commented, with phone technology being quite mature, it’s unlikely that these days, there will be many improvements that would justify a yearly upgrade.
If you want the new iphone and have money to burn go buy it , no one here is going to stop you. Just dont try sell the apple BS to others ... the main vibe i get from 90% of people on this forum they dont like the price or the design ..“Compelling” is subjective. If you don’t want to upgrade, that’s great. Feel free to keep your current phone for exactly as long as you wish. But that really doesn’t have any relevance to anyone else; they’ll make their own decision. What’s important to you could very well be relatively unimportant to them.
btw, plenty of users would rather have a fully featured phone than a laptop, in any case. Q: What’s a computer? A: an iPhone. Or an iPad. But they’re not called computers, are they? Don’t try to confuse a little girl by calling her iPad a computer, grandma neighbor lady lol.
Well, few guys wanted a bigger one, and didn’t get it. I was not disappointed, but kinda worried about if the X size would be enough me. When I had the iP7+, I took the Train and Bus to work, a bigger iPhone kinda made sense for me. Now we moved and I drive by car to work, and I don’t badly need a bigger iPhone. At home I have the 12” iPadPro, and at work i workLove the ending of the `108 minute`video with the Tim Cook Memoji being cut off while he's talking. Ha! Ha!

This, I'll never understand. How could someone be -disappointed- with the X's screen size? Really? "Disappointed"? Is that really the feeling? But I'm glad you have your "phablet" screen size now, so we won't hear this again.![]()
What I’m hearing is a lot of butt hurt from people who can’t afford the flagship, though they’ll often preface their comment with “I can afford it, but”. They then proceed to describe in intricate detail all the reasons why they really don’t need the phone they can’t afford, and why a cheaper phone isn’t really that bad.If you want the new iphone and have money to burn go buy it , no one here is going to stop you. Just dont try sell the apple BS to others ... the main vibe i get from 90% of people on this forum they dont like the price or the design ..
Second the ESim its crap no one supports it. I fly Asia - Middle East and Europe a lot and for work . Just give me a dual sim. You can buy simcard with data any where just pop in and your good to go. every one understands how it works.
Besides if you travel a lot for work you dont want a big phone, that you can't stick in your pocket to keep it safe , you want a small one I have a SE that is a great size and you want a Ipad (pro) with LTE 512 GB its cheaper then the Xmax and Ooh it has much better speakers a super larger display comes with the pen and actually lets you get work done, or makes watching a movie great experience much better then a phone screen.
thirtly Prices of repairs of the 8 and X where insanely high , you will need to spend money on apple care or some other warranty because damages can easy become 300+ thing with apple ... i have never seen a Iphone screen that could not brake... or a glass back side ...
You can minimize every upgraded feature and try to convince yourself it’s “a rubbish upgrade” but you’re objectively wrong. This year’s XS is absolutely, 100%, without a doubt a better iPhone in so many ways compared to last year’s X.
Answer this question: Which would you rather have? Last year’s X for $999 or this year’s XS for $999? It’s a no brainer, isn’t it?
There’s not a single reason to prefer the 2017 X, and there’s at least a dozen improvements to the XS. There’s no point in my listing them again, is there? It is in no way a rubbish upgrade. Can’t afford to upgrade? Fine, don’t upgrade. Don’t want to bother upgrading? No problem. And if you already have an X and want to pretend that it’s as good as the XS, and it’s really not an upgrade, feel free.
But you’re only fooling yourself. No one else believes it—not for a second. Your phone is a year old, and it simply isn’t as good as the current flagship. Deal with it. Whether or not you want to upgrade to this year’s model from your 2017 X is up to you. But don’t try to tell those of us who know perfectly well just how much better the XS is than the X, that the XS is a “rubbish upgrade”. It isn’t. What, you didn’t expect the 2018 X to upstage your 2017 model when you bought it last year?
Why is it that it’s only the X owners that can’t handle the fact that the 2018 XS is a better phone than the 2017 X is?
Shame Apple isn't making phones for Mr average.
You have got to be kidding. Seriously? There are more mid range and low range options this year than ever before. I am astounded you think those options aren’t more than enough for the Mr. Average in your mind.
The funniest part is that wallpaper. If you're so proud of notch why hide it?
No one expects you to upgrade every year, or really cares one way or the other whether you do or don’t.Quite a defensive response. I think you’ll find if you actually read my post, not once did I say that the XS is not a better phone than the X. Would you care to quote me where I’ve stated that the XS is not better than the X? In fact, I acknowledge that the XS has improved over the X in every feature I mentioned.
To answer your question:
“Which would you rather have? Last year’s X for $999 or this year’s XS for $999?”.
Obviously I would take this years XS.... but you’ve asked a question that is not relevant in the context of my comment. A more appropriate question would be:
“Is the XS an upgrade worth paying for if you already own an X?”
And for me (and others, from reading the comments) the answer is most definitely “No”.
