Not really impressed with a Red I Phone that most people end up covering with a good quality case.

When I try to enter the Apple Store (Attempt to buy any product) Safari on my Mac tells me it could not open the page because too many redirects happened(?

"Watch this spot!" sounds overkill to me just to allow customers to order the red iPhone 7 or the new iPad that were announced earlier this week - unless they add something extra.

Exactly! Apple is the one of the only major online retail outlets that takes their ENTIRE store down for hours just update one product. They do it because they know a bunch of idiot "journalist" will fawn and report on it as though it's "news." So its done SOLELY for cheap marketing.

This was cute 10 years ago, now it's just idiotic at best and at worst a horrible use of website technology and system design for a "cutting" edge technology company with billions of dollars to spend to improve their architecture.

It's funny but that used to be necessary when the whole site was powered by web objects.
But they revamped the whole site a couple of years ago and the back end is all modern normal web tech.
So releasing anything shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

So any hold ups seem purely marketing based.
I bet their testing to see how much buzz it can create. Its like creating a virtual press conference for a new product just by putting up that message.

Taking the store down for 6 hours just to add two products we already knew about?

Welcome to 1997.

And anyone hoping for refreshed Mac product line, kaby lake processors and updated desktops? Crickets..... and the noise of gentle wind blowing.

But hey, it's nice the iPads and IOS devices got an update. Does it have something to do with the fact that Apple gets income from all the apps and sales via apps on iOS devices.... but not so much Mac?

[doublepost=1490348421][/doublepost]I don't get it. Why one of the largest technology company needs to shut down its online store to update something?

It used to be marketing hype to arouse the faithful to empty their wallets.
Now it's just an object of derision and laughter.
A red phone and a heavier, thicker tablet.
Maybe they should have taken it down for six days.
There are no buy recommendations in the buyer's guide.
Look, a roadmap.

Apple is the only company I know of that takes down the whole store to update products. How 1990's. And then 6 hours, guess they are still using stone tablets for part of the back end. Now some of you will say, its for dramatic effect. I agree, but I don't think the effect is positive, no matter what planet Apple thinks they are on.

The shutting down of the website is likely more to do about marketing and promotion then technical.

We here at Mac rumours are in the know about new product launches. There are millions who will stumble upon Apple's website and are intrigued.

A bit of old school drama and building anticipation...since no one lines up outside stores anymore...do they?

So what does everyone think about how constrained the new iPad supply will be?

I don't want to just order blindly; I'd like to go into the store and see one in person before I do. Are they likely to have shortages like with iPhones?

6 hours. I'm sure Apple has an army of people who manage the website. 2 products. The changes are probably already on a staging or dev server and all they'd need to do is push the new pages out.

Apple is a show off company. They are mediocre at best, they haven't done anything new, they lack of a brain and they are show offs.

Taking the store down for 6 hours just to add two products we already knew about?

Either they are trying to add hype, which is sad, or they actually have to take the site down for maintenance to change the inventory, which is even worse.

Just ordered the 32GB Wifi only from BH Photo Video. $319 and no tax. But it's a preorder, no estimated date available.

Something Special

Just who do they think they are kidding. Taking down a store like this really should be a thing of the past.
Like Unboxing Videos, can we just get rid of them?
Yours,
Grumpy.

Hey, now. Unboxing videos -- well done ones and short ones at least -- can be useful. I've resorted to them many times because many companies are silent or ambiguous on their product's web pages as to what is included in the box.

Taking a web site down for hours like this is not only silly it costs sales of other products. I understand when it's done before an Apple Special Event. But this, not so much. Apple already had the "buy" buttons set up days ago.

So as a professional user you planned your project to require an online order to be made right now. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Not 4 hours ago. Not in 4 hours. But now.

I think you should consider better planning and contingency.

You have an idea how procurement works in larger companies and organizations?
It is usually not the discretionary decision of a single individual to plan their activities around the idiosyncrasies of Apple doing its business. There may also be other activities at hand that now will be pushed back to make room for another try if their store will be up.
Especially when Apple announced on Tuesday that one should be able to order their new products on the 24th - which clearly is not possible now!

Oaah Tim is sooo excited !
Demand outpaced supply by a whopping factor of 100 - while supply was cut...
