You have an idea how procurement works in larger companies and organizations?

Yes I do. And never have I ever been in a position where one of my projects was materially affected by a vendor's short web outage.

I want to order a new iPad too, but I'm not going to pretend that it's some major catastrophe. But whatever floats your boat.

I don't know where you are but in Canada we have pretty poor access to Apple products outside of Apple directly. Best Buy are big US chain who have stores here but their Canadian stores are crap. They still don't know about the pending iPad release.

But despite how crap the Canadian resellers are, I'm still not sure what sort of issue would materially affect my project.

Maybe I just plan stuff out better though.

Apparently new watch bands and phone cases are supposed to keep us busy until Sept. Its really hard to be an Apple fan this days..

There seems to be a consensus here that since there's no logical technical reason for a site being down 6 hours for updates, that this is all just a marketing ploy.

But a marketing ploy to release for sale items that have ALREADY BEEN ANNOUNCED?!? And it's not like it was some kind of earth shattering announcement in the first place. Not even close.

So ... if the consensus is right, and for Apple this is indeed a marketing ploy, all that shows me is how horribly out of touch they've become (I'm looking at you, Tim Cook).

Furthermore, that makes me think ... when Tim talked about his incredible 'pipeline' of products, maybe he WAS talking about a new color of phone and some watch bands. Since they seem to think releasing that, and an slightly updated ipad warrants twice shutting down the site to 'create anticipation'.

F....ing unreal.

I was wrong before... For Germany etc. 16:01 is the time they announced for preorder. So everything is fine. Hmm... preparations for the launch of Apple Pay in Germany and Italy?!

maybe they're sneaking in a surprise - a spec-bump in the apple TV ? :)
I would buy it today, if it would be 4K ready.

Is this different then the iPad's and red iPhones already announced and seen on the store earlier this week?

Also, its 2017, a web site does not need to "shut down" anymore. If Apple can't innovate and implement immediate switch over to updated web content for new products then I don't know what they are doing with their billions of ill-gotten and underutilized profits as they obviously haven't hired any decent web developers.

Also the "big web reveal" is a tired marketing cliche that a company like Apple doesn't have to keep doing to generate hype for their products. You can generate hype by not having to artificially shut down a web-site for a time to let people know you are about to release mildly updated products or new color options, such ****ing arrogance...

Apple please have a look at the web infrastructure from market leaders like Amazon and Google where I have never seen a web site shut down just because prices or product information change. Its not 1999 anymore, eCommerce and Web 2.0 have matured a lot since then, perhaps its time to "Think Different" again.

This little ruse is getting old and stupid beyond belief.... Really Apple? you had to take the store down for hours to announce the products and then again to put them up for sale... If you only you were a tech company so that you can figure this stuff out...

to be an Apple fan this days..

Hear hear!

Amongst other things, I'm going to have to invest in a beefy Windows PC because my 2012 rMBP cannot keep up with the work I need it to do for university, and I'm not in a position buy another £2,000 machine when I can build a £700 PC with more than the power I need. I also have Windows-only software I need to run.

It's a shame that this is necessary, because I love Mac. But Mac just cannot fit my needs at this moment in time. That said, I will not be selling nor getting rid of my MacBook. It'll simply take a lesser role in my day to day productivity.

*everyone expects refreshes of everything*
*Apple announce red iPhone and iPad Air 1.5*
*everyone moans about whyyyy is the store down to add watch bands and iPad Air 1.5*
*Apple announce refresh of entire Mac lineup*

;)

I agree with everyone else that it seems impossible there could be a technical reason Apple does this. It only makes sense as a marketing ploy to generate hype. But has a journalist actually asked Apple recently about this? It would be interesting if someone posted a straightforward question about this to see the response. If no one has or will then this impugns the integrity of journalists covering Apple. How can no one ask why a hugely profitable tech company needs to shut its online store down in 2017 to push a product?

Hard? No. Boring -- absolutely. But my own philosophy is that I'm not married to any company. I favor some over others because of the products they sell or services they offer. As a rationale (or somewhat at least, hopefully) consumer my dollars and interests go to what is useful and interesting.

In tech, if that doesn't have an Apple logo on it so be it. I'm not going to not buy something because it says ACME if it suits my needs. I own a ton of Apple products but my house is full of other brands too. Admittedly, the level of Apple products in my house is decreasing only because the variety of products Apple sells is quickly being reduced to iPads and iPhones.

The problem is the tech media is weak. The ones that cover Apple are suck ups because they know Apple will blackball them if they say anything negative. This goes back to the Jobs era and TC has carried it on. When is the last time you saw an early review of an Apple product that really exposed it? All the negatives in reviews are finely worded and sandwiched around positive features.

You are right. I am not materially affected by this: it is a very first world problem to have!

However, I need to / want to order through our University Edu-Apple store, because they usually have the best prices. However, when the store is down, I can not even get a quote on prices for ANY product.
Stuff like this is really why people in charge of procurement hate to order Apple stuff.

It makes me laugh seeing comments from people complaining about what Apple announced the other day, they never promised anything in fact they said it was "Maintenance" the next product event will be September you can't always get what you want when you want, patience is a vertue.

Totally agreed.
